I have a query regarding the ranking of female boxer Lyndsey Scragg (Superfeatherweight).
Before her fight on June 12th she was ranked world No.9 with 57 ranking points.
She won her fight and along with it the GBC Title.
Her ranking is now No.10 and she has gone down to 48 points.
How can it be that somebody wins a fight and actually loses points ???
Thanks
Michael
Ranking of Lyndsey Scragg
Re: Ranking of Lyndsey Scragg
Hi Michael,
I have nothing to do with the ranking of boxers on the site but I assume that the quality, and record, of the opponent play a part in determining the points awarded for respective victories. That being the case, Kristine Shergold's meagre record of won 1, lost 2 going into the fight means that ranking points wise, Lyndsey's win on Friday night will have done little for her by way of movement up the super-featherweight rankings. I doubt that the fact that the bout was for a title of sorts counts for much.
I'm sure that there are other editors who may be able to offer you a fuller explanation and they will doubtless reply to your query in due course.
Congratulations to Lyndsey for her victory.

Re: Ranking of Lyndsey Scragg
Lyndsey Scragg won, but only by a small margin of 2 score points, against an inferior rated opponent.mscragg wrote:I have a query regarding the ranking of female boxer Lyndsey Scragg (Superfeatherweight).

So she lost points.
The minimum margin for a clear win on points is 5 score points per judge for a 10 round bout.
Re: Ranking of Lyndsey Scragg
Thank you for your reply.
The reason i raised the question was because it just seemed non sensical that a fighter can actually lose points for a victory, regardless of the quality of the opponent. Kristine Shergold scored 8 ranking points for losing the fight !!
When Lyndsey challenged Jelena Mrdjenovich for the WBC Title las November she lost on points, and received no ranking points, despite Mrdjenovich being the world No.1 at the time.
Also, when i look at the rankings of girls like Jennifer Scott and Nicole Boss i see that they have been awarded a huge a amount of points after having only 2 or 3 fights against poor opponents. How is that?
Can you explain the formula for scoring ranking points as this will be a factor in my decision making when selecting opponents for Lyndsey Scragg.
Please forgive my probing questions, i am just seeking a better understanding of how the system works.
Thankyou
Michael

Re: Ranking of Lyndsey Scragg
It is explained in full here ..
http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/Ratings
In simple terms the best way to move up the ratings is to fight boxers that are either ranked above or very close below your fighter. Beating bums does not help your rating and in some cases can actually harm it (as you have found out).
Cheers, John

For details please look at:

You can see the rating development of all boxers mentioned.
box_0>box_1: boxer's rating before bout > rating after bout
opp_0>opp_1: opponent's rating before bout > rating after bout
A boxers rating is reduced, when a boxer didn't defeat an opponent or at least hold a close decision with an opponent inside 25% of his own rating within 18 months.
The rating points are increased, when a boxers steps down the weight divisions. They are reduced vice versa, when he steps up.
Scragg:
Until 2008-04-30 she got some points, but lost part of the points at once, as all of her opponents showed 0 rating points themselves - which was less than 25% of her own rating.
She defeated Oleynik in a close decision and so raised her rating from 32 to 52. This rating was not reduced any longer, as Oleynik had 66 points before.
She lost in a nearly clear decision (4.7 points difference per judge) against Mrdjenovich and so lost some points as she was inside 25% of Mrdjenovich's rating.
She won a close decision against Shergold (0 points before the bout) and again lost some points.
