World Championships 09

Post by El Raincoat »

I just wondered if anyone had any info on the Worlds this year. I know it takes place in Milan between 29 August & 13 September.

Does anyone know how i can find out who has qualified for this yet?

How much will the last Olympics effect the Worlds this time?

There are no qualifiers for the Worlds. It's an open tournament, every national federation can attend with a full squad, eg 11 boxers (one per weight).
Most of the favorites fought in the Olympics.

I think the US team is all our national champions. So if you look for a list of the 2009 US National Champions, that's our team.

No other Olympian. I know Hunter lost in the prelims but no Raynell Williams or 2 time previous Olympian Rau'see Warren. I wonder if Warren will go pro i know he was pretty upset at losing in the National's,

Rau'shee came back and boxed for the 3rd place bout. I think he will stay amateur as he can still make more money as an amateur than turning pro fighting 4 rounders in Cincinnati with the AIBA pro league coming up. It was a good wake up call for him that he can't just walk through the US competition and there are some young guns coming up who are hungry and can box.
Williams lost in the regional tournament and it was a wake up call for him too. I hear he will come back hopefully with more desire to be successful.

Those things can ony be good for both guys. Competion like that will help both guys moving forward for the bigger challenge's at world level.

Any possible medal winners or even Gold medallists?

For the US team at the worlds? They are young but I would say the best bets are Louie Byrd, Jesus Magdaleno and Framkie Gomez. Personally, I don't think they should send the whole team especially the ones with no international experience as they will get chewed up. I'd send them to some lesser tournaments to season first but money is a big problem with USAB right now.

the US team is going to go to Milan for an international dual USA vs Italy on July 5th to the 13th in Italy that will be two dual with Usica and Milan. what do you think that USA boxing is not going to get these guy some experience before the go to the worlds? they learned with Byrd when he got chewed up I think it was 22-2, come on :shame: lets just face it thats our team they are young but hey they are the champions so please lets stand by them and hope for the best!! I hope that more than just the 3 JMac mentioned will do well. The dual will be a good test. Mike Hunter and Jordan have the toughest tests as they box the gold and silver medalists from Beijing. I think they are both up for the challenge. Kevin Rivers is another guy with some international experience and I think he is looking good.

i think our team is very good.

Errol Spence is another who has some international experience.he won 2 fights at the youth world championships.beating the Colombian Olympic qualifier alex theren 11-4 and then beating George Bryan 15-1 win the next night.
But rite now hes very consistent. And i dont think he has peaked yet.He is on the come up to being our eras Demetrius Andrade.
hes beating everybody that is put infront of him?
im very confident he will at least medal at the world championships.

Also Kevin Rivers and Robert Brant,
both fighters also have international fights.Kevin won a fight in mexico. and hes got Barry Hunter which is a huge advantage.
Robert is maturing since mexico.impressive win at nationals

Louie Bryd, shouldnt be put under the microscope for the dual with ireland.all the scores were one sided.

Frankie Gomez,won gold in 2007

Jesus,Miguel, and the rest of the team will do great.

I forgot about Hunter. He has a chance to medal with the right draw. I want USA to win as much as anybody but I am being realistic and been to 10 world championships of different levels as well as the Pan Am's and Olympics. There is a difference between the world youth championships and the senior worlds. Many countries have most of their Olympic teams back. Don't forget the crap scoring system which does not work in US boxers favor as most judges don't count body shots and US boxers are trained like pros in their local gyms to bang the body.

Hitting a rough patch, the Canadian team is expected to send only half a team (5 boxers), if that. The thing is that the Francophonie games are held almost simultaniously in Lebanon. Several Canadian team members would benefit more from a tournament of that caliber, rather than travelling to the Worlds to get bounced in the first round.

You can bank on 91+ Didier Bence and 69 kg Mikael Zewski, who's shown an insane improvement in results this year, being in Milan. After that, it gets murky. At 91 kg, Sylvera Louis was tought of as a sure thing, but he's having a sucky 2009 and is hurt. He could be headed to Beirut. 64 kg Brandt Butt is doing very well, but as a very young first year member of the national team, the Francophonie Games might fit better in his career plan. As well, veterans Ibrahim Kamal (60 kg) and, to a lesser extent, Steve Franjic (81 kg) might not be out of place at the Worlds.

It's unlikely that you will see in Milan a Canadian boxer not taken from this group of six. The intentions of the Canadian Federation should be announced soon. I'll keep you posted.

In the registration for the Worlds, Canada listed 8 weight classes. They indicated that they would not have a boxer in the three lowest weight classes, but would from 57kg (125#) on up. That obviously can change as even the AIBA site says the the total number of boxers who enter the World Championships will most likely end up being lower.

Italy as the host country will win some golds as the host country always does but they do have the world silver medal at 91 kg and gold at 91+ so they'll probably both get gold. If Zou Shiming is boxing and I don't know if he retired but if he is, he'll win at 48 or 51
Vodopyanov RUS or Lomachenko UKR 57 kg, if Lomachenko is boxing, he'll win gold
Selimov RUS 60
Tishchenko RUS 64
Correa CUB 75
Beterbiev RUS 81
Russo ITA 91
Cammarelle ITA 91+

Well, it's official. Canada is only sending 5 guys to the Worlds.

(In French, but you'll get the gist of it - sorry about the quasi-plug)

Also, having just read an article in The Ring about the three big name American boxers going for 2012, I'm curious as to whether they kept their place on the national team. While I'm at it, can somebody post the whole American roster for Milan? Thanks.
