Joe Calzaghe Beats Warren in Court, Awarded £1.8million

Joe Calzaghe Beats Warren in Court, Awarded £1.8million

The ongoing legal saga between Joe Calzaghe and former promoter allegedly may be over, for now. Calzaghe has been awarded around £1.8million, winning his lawsuit against Warren and his company Sports Network. Judges refused Warren’s request to appeal the High Court ruling.

Calzaghe has claimed the money was owed from last April’s decision win over Bernard Hopkins. Warren denied the claim and said it was Calzaghe who owed him £1million for breaking a verbal promotional contract. Justice Wyn Williams dismissed Warren's claim in March and ordered the promoter to pay Calzaghe his money.

Since that ruling, Warren’s company Sports Network would go into administration.

Big money eh? On the one hand, I'm glad Calzaghe got his money. On the other, I hope this won't be bad for British boxing.

Can't read the article due to virus checker, but I am sure this does not mean he has his money yet does it?

This would be Sports Networks appeal against the ruling I would have thought, as the case was Joe Vs Sports Network, with Warren just as a director of the company.

Yes, they have to pay before going into administration.

Ouch! Long way to go yet, but if he is successful, Warren could be in deep diddy.

Mash him down!!

Fwank is a slippery snake, but JC has him on the ropes.

JC is alwso going after Fwank Warren PERSONALLY ( legally) so he has a better chance of getting his cash.

FW always does this when a fighter leaves him -he just tries to make life as difficult as possible for them. He'll lose this case though.Sounds like the judge didn't think very highly of him when dismissing the right to appeal.

how can this be bad for British boxing?, warren owes Calzaghe the money and should pay up, simple.

how can a company doing as well as fwanks go into administration, then set up again and no one says anything, owing people like Calzaghe money, shocking!

Who knows, the longer this goes on, maybe the more Joe will be tempted to make a comeback? If he needs the cashola, then one comeback fight could definitely help his situation!

However, I suspect Joe is financially comfortable, although you never know with Boxers?

Sorry guys you are misinterpreting the situation.
All that has happened is that the appeal against the original judgement is lost.
Absolutely no impact upon the fact that the Defender, in this case Sports Network, is now in administration and whilst Calazaghe may be the head of the queue, you can't get blood out of a stone.
I heard informally that Joe was offered 10p in the pound = £180,000.
The determination of the payment will be based upon the insolvency review.

How can a company go skint in such a short amount of time then set up again like nothing has happened, there are rules that conduct the way companies act in this country.

Calzaghe should get paid what he is owed, Fwank did say he always pay's his boxers, the money that these people have earned over the years must be mega.

Steve R,
The timing of the insolvency is irrelevent.
Fact is, Sports Network had not promoted a fight for the 18 months period prior to this judgement.
The Company was already in trouble.
The Calzaghe judgement was the final nail in the coffin and meant the Company had no alternative than to go bust.
Now that's the party line, and as much as you hate it, it's plausible.
There are rules on the governance of businesses, but name any rule that Sports Network has broken.
Rules are one thing, morals are another.
I have no feeling either way.
It sounds like I'm doing a PR job for oh worthy one but I'm not - just sticking to the facts.
If during the investigation (if there is one) into the winding up of Sports Network, evidence is uncovered of asset stripping etc, that's another matter.
However the way the world is going at the moment I doubt there'll be anything other than a cursory glance.
The Board has granted the new licence - the king is dead, long live the king.

From what he's said he is financially comfortable and was always looking for a career in TV, the Nintendo Wii ads etc won't have done his bank balance any harm at all though, of course.
