she's called michelle de bruin now. she was on the tv last night strangely enough. dont know is she was competing this time though due to the fact she was banned after the 96 olympics for 4 years after 'tampering' with a urine sample. according to her she didnt add alcohol to a urine sample. her improved performances were down to "weight lifting and improved training techniques"Freiheit wrote:I think it was Michelle smith. First she competed for Ireland but didnt she change her nationality to dutch at one point?
That's blood packing. Lasse Viren got done for this, I think. You can do it two ways, not sure which one Viren used, but basically you keep your blood supply at around a pint lower than it should be while you're training, and just before a competition, stick some red-blood-cell-rich blood back in, or you can just stick the 'good' blood in anyway without the previous faff, but of course your body gets used to doing the work on fewer red blood cells if you train with only 8 pints of blood in you (I think my numbers are right, we had an assembly on it in primary school when I was 7).Matchfixer wrote:Regarding drug testing and evasion... The most worrying tale I've read is the trend for DIY blood infusions. Not sure exactly what it is or whether it involved cyclists but I didn't like the sound of it. Perhaps someone here knows more?
how do you go about keeping your blood supply a pihnt lower than it should be?? the body is constantly reproducing cells to replace old ones etc. hence the fact that within a short period of time blood donors are back to a full quota so to speak. so what do you do? drain off a pint twice a day or somethingCoconut wrote:That's blood packing. What is the scandal surrounding carl lewis, I hear more and more about this lately, but don't remember anything at the time.
He certainly cannot have been juicing, he was the most slight of 100m runners in his era, apart from that guy who held the world record at the time whose name escapes me now, can anyone remember who held the world record before Ben Johnson, he was never olympic or world champ I don't think.

There was a story that he got caught at the 1988 US Olympic trials, failed a test. Him and his training partner, I think, who was Joe Deloach (spelling?) who won the 200 in Seoul. Authorities reckoned it was something found in some supplement he was taking and was inadvertant. Horse shit. USTFA are looking more and more dodgy all the time.jamesmcdonnell wrote:What is the scandal surrounding carl lewis, I hear more and more about this lately, but don't remember anything at the time.

Linford all but came out and said Lewis was on the juice as well. Mind, you'll have to go some to persuade me old Linf was clean.

Ben Johnson's now entirely off the books, of course, but Carl Lewis tied Calvin Smith's 9.93 s (1983) in 1987, when Ben Johnson shattered the record at the World championships in Rome at 9.83. Carl came second so never actually had that record until Johnson admitted his career-long steroid use under oath in Canada's Dubin inquiry in 1989. At that time his 9.92 - second to Johnson's Seoul romp of 9.79 - retroactively became the world record.
But Ben doesn't exist anymore so Carl is a three time world record holder.
And the suspicion with Carl was human growth hormone and multiple cover ups by the USTFA. He and all the other top Americans suposedly failed tests in the US but were cleared without the international bodies or IOC ever being informed.

They all are. Some are ahead of the curve, some have complicit coaches, officials, federations, and some will never get caught out of sheer luck.
Erasing one admitted cheater from the books to have him replaced by a suspected cheater who was ultimately displaced by a series of eyebrow-raising performances and the now-suspended Montgomery is all a little daft.
The lesson is, never admit guilt. You can keep your records. Ben Johnson voluntarily participated in the government inquiry that led to his admission. That was used to justify the loss of his 9.83 record and his many indoor records.
Then he got caught again in his comeback.

After you give blood your plasma volume (plasma being mostly water) quickly rebounds, but your red cell count needs a couple of weeks to fully get back to normal.neil r wrote:how do you go about keeping your blood supply a pihnt lower than it should be?? the body is constantly reproducing cells to replace old ones etc. hence the fact that within a short period of time blood donors are back to a full quota so to speak. so what do you do? drain off a pint twice a day or something

Add a few years, a few pounds, a few grey hairs.
Odd too how Billy's recording career dried up around the same time Kofi got the job.
