I've known people with dogs called Darkie and snowflake- it's never intended in an offensive way.

I had a black dog that I called Blackie. No problem until he escaped from the garden and was returned by a young black girl. She said having obviously read the disc on his collar " Ive brought your Blackie back". She, bless her, wasnt bothered by the dogs name but I felt bloody awful.
