Cotto vs Clottey knockdown

Post by lirva »

Round one was a clear round to Clottey until he got dropped with a jab with ten seconds remaining.

My question to you is, how did you score this round?

10-8?
10-9?
9-9?

I think that this would have been a 10-9 round to Clottey, but with Cotto scoring a KD, it became a 10-8 round to Cotto... a three point swing.

if clottey had been absolutely dominating cotto in the first round, then it would only be a 10-9 round IMO but he wasnt. he was winning a close but clear round

Yeah, I am with the consensus. Clottey was JUST winning that first round until he got dropped - heavy KD or not, is was a legitimate KD and constituted a 10/8 score to Cotto. If Clottey had dominated the round then it would've been 10/9, but he didn't.

I had it 10-8. Have to say I disagreed with a lot of the round scoring by the TR commentators at the start, which is rare as they're usually spot on for me.

Ah, maybe it was me.

I had it 10-8 it was such a close round probably was going to give it to Clottey but the KD won him the round imo

The consensus is that clottey was winning the round clearly. The KD should give cotto the round for sure. But I think it should be 10-9. I think the rounds should be scored NORMALLY and points taken off at the end.

I wouldn't have said Clottey was clearly winning though.

Cotto was coming forward more but Clottey was connecting more. This is not to say there was much action though, there was little difference in the round, and surely the knockdown gave the better performance in the round to Cotto (as well the point taken off Clottey.

Personally I thin an instance like this should make it 9-9, because a fighter winning a round gets an extra point when the opponent is knocked down, shouldn't they only get 1 extra point when they are losing the round?

By rights, it should be 9-9. That makes the most logical sense -- and it's a point I've often considered. But for some reason they never do that, so I scored it 10-8, because I knew that's how the judges would score it.

It was clearly 10-8. I had Clottey winning the round, but the knockdown gives it to Cotto then the point comes off.

Slightly OT, does anyone know what the origins f the 10-9 system are? It gives me a headache trying to add the fighters scores up. Surely it would be easier to just give 1 pt to the fighter winning the round, with an additional point for any KDs and penalties against his opponent. So winning around is 1 pt. Winning with a KD would give you 2pts. Winning with a KD and a point taken from your opponent for a low blow gives you 3 pts.

Where's the flaw?

The points system regarding knockdowns is ridiculous anyway, you either win the round or you don't regardless of whether you have to get off the floor to win it.

I don't think scoring knockdowns is a bad idea. I think of it like goal difference in football, it only really comes into play all other things being equal.
