anyway like I was saying...Yeah I was one of those who thought Clay was going to win. Hmm I suppose I should take that to one more honesty level..... my guitar teacher and my older brother thought and told me that that's what was going to happen. My feelings were more in the area of "hope".

I didn't have an opinion at the time. This is largely because I wasn't born yet.

My grandfather had Ali on the grounds he was so impressive in the
Olympics and beat Australian Tony Madigan, who Clay-Ali had lost
to prior. My Grandfather followed the amateurs as much as the pro's
and was always impressed with Clay. So I guess he did.

Rollie Schwartz picked "Clay" to beat Liston. Rollie probably knew more about amateur boxing than anybody. he was a referee in the 1968 and 1972 olympics and was the coach for the 1976 olympic team. he was insturmental in bringing the olympic boxing back to cincinnati., and he was the person jmost instrumental in getting amatuer boxers to wear head gear. he was my mentor in training amateur boxers.

he had no doubt that clay would win. i said no way and bobby elkus..part of the elkus family that first managed ezzard charles told him he was coo coo.

during the closed circuit fight in the theatre one of the announcers mentioned rollie's pick and dismissed it.

..and clay won just as rollie said he would..speed, footwork, left jab and totally confident. rollie was a nice guy and didn't say "i told you so."

He also picked spinks to beat ali in their first fight.

a prelude to the clay/liston fight. bobby elkus owned a clothing store which catered to show business and sports stars. one time clay came in and bobby told him that his family had once managed ezzard charles.
clay said, "you sure did a lousy job of it because he's on his ass now." bobby was furious. ezzard did very well under that management and it wasn't until they lost control that ezz's financial troubles started it. so..the day of the liston fight bobby kept saying how liston would demolish that "wise ass" and even acted out the fight to show how it would go.

this was the last time either of us second-guessed rollie.


i think i've written here about ali/liston II . same cast...same fighters and a hilarious story. maybe i'll write about it again if anyone is interested.
