Calzaghe "Jean Pascal is a bum" (Pascal-Diaconu spoiler)

Post by Autobarn »

Pascal had a war in front of over 13,000 fans vs WBC light heavyweight champ Adrian Diaconu, in a major event at Montreal's Bell Centre. Big Canadian grudge match, and apparently a riveting inside war:

ah fvck it, Pascal won. Is Joe right, that "he's a bum, nothing but"?

I wanted to call up the most decorated super middle ever on that comment. Now I'm doing it - with interest!

Can't wait to see Pascal-Diaconu, can't bloody wait.

I'll say one thing about Jean Pascal - and that he is above the one dimensional Sakio Bika and Jeff Lacy.

Adrian Diaconu was regarded as a bigger talent coming out of Romania than Lucian was. I can't say that i've seen a wad of Diaconu fights, but he despatched of Rico Hoye in just 3 rounds by knockout. Not bad considering he is 5'8 and Hoye is about 6'3.

How well would Pascal fair against Chad Dawson? im not so sure it's a fight Pascal would win given the size of Dawson and his southpaw style but he could beat Hugo Garay for the WBA strap at a push.

Pascal IS World Class though despite what Calzaghe thinks. Certainly more so than Peter Manfredo, Evans Ashira, Mario Vei.... etc ect

Pascal has probably made himself a target for Dawson. Pascal and Diaconu put on a war in front of over 13,000. Pascal can earn a good following in Canada. The trip isn't too far for Dawson, who could do with being in an exciting event, vs someone fresh.

I think Pascal improved in defeat to Froch & has really earned his world title.

I wonder if Pascal and Diaconu will have a rematch. Pascal will likely have to face Silvio Branco, who is somehow in the WBC ratings.

If Jean Pascal is a bum, Calzaghe is a jerk! Very few of Joe's victims went on to do something. Despite ruining Lacy, this suggests Joe picked most of his foes at the right time.

Was Lacy as good as touted back then though? He struggled against Sheika when they fought

Pascal is definitely not a bum. He is a very good fighter and pushed Froch incredibly close. But for Froch being so resilient and relentless, Pascal would have taken the WBC Super-middleweight title.

The Froch who fought and beat Pascal was a better one than the one who turned up and stopped Taylor.

Pascal is tough, strong, fit, durable and a decent boxer.

Calzaghe lets himself down with those sort of comments because they are clearly not based on fact and are ultimately only made in an attempt to lessen the achievements of Froch.

If Froch goes on and beats Lucian Bute next then he's possibly already eclipsed what Calzaghe managed to achieve at the elite level. You could easily argue that wins over Jermain Taylor and Jean Pascal are better than wins over Bernard Hopkins and Jeff Lacy. The only other standout win Calzaghe has on his record is the decision victory over Mikkel Kessler. If Froch can beat Bute, that will be his Kessler as far as I'm concerned.

Froch could potentially equal everything Calzaghe did at an elite level in a fraction of the time.

Does anyone take Joe Calzaghe serious? I don't - he seems to say contradictory or amazing ignorant comments everytime he opens up his trap. I am just glad Haye, Hatton and Froch don't have his attitude when it comes to ambition. Idiot.

Maybe he's 'not so slyly' drumming up business by slating Froch opponents, mmmmm

I'm not at all - I think Calzaghe may have learnt from Lennox, he will say thinks to allude to the fact that he 'may' do if the money is right but never actually do it. He recently said he'd come back for £10 million but nobody would pay him that at his weight. In Lennox's case it's an ego thing to make sure people still consider him the 'Champ', Calzaghe is going down the same route in my opinion. It's quite sad to be that way, to have to remind people that you are still around. If you are truly great people will always remember and you don't need to self promote.

Clearly Pascal is not a bum, he isn't now, he wasn't then. Just as clearly, Lacy was one-dimensional because Calzaghe made him look one-dimensional. He was also ruined as a fighter, because his corner didn't pull him out after the eighth round. Styles make fights and had Froch faced Lacy, it would have been a completely different fight.

But comparing Froch and Calzaghe at this stage is daft. Yes, Pascal has done incredibly well to win a world title so quickly, but Calzaghe's greatest achievement was being able to continue winning over such a long period of time. To beat Eubank and Kessler a decade apart, is a remarkable achievement whichever way you look at it. He was also a pretty sensational fighter before he became a world champion.

I hope Froch gets the fights he wants and that he wins them, but comparing the two should only really be done when Carl retires.

And Joe won't come back

The two clearly don't like each other. But, on here, people take quotes from Calzaghe about Froch and blow them up into some outrage, whereas negative quotes from Froch about Calzaghe are completely accepted as "showing his ambition".

I've heard Joe say lots of good things about Froch, but if you read this board you would think he was this incredibly bitter, twisted person, which he isn't. Likewise, Carl has a lot of respect for Calzaghe. But the big quote is usually picked as a negative one.

The bottom line, I believe, is, Carl started calling Joe out and saying he would knock him out when he was an eight-round fighter and nowhere near on the same page. This put Joe's back up a bit.

But when Carl did get into contention, Joe was on HBO and looking for big money fights, the sort of money a fight with Carl simply didn't bring. Carl also had a couple of really slow years with various injuries, which didn't help. He was just around about a year or two too late.

Brits do like him. That's why he was voted sports personality of the year, that's why 51,000 people paid to see him at 1am in Cardiff in November. That doesn't sound like someone people don't like or respect. Don't believe that this board is any sort of guide to the British public, or the British boxing public.

But's that's not the issue. The issue is whether he wanted to fight Froch or Hopkins/Jones. Carl became a world champion after Joe had his last fight. Joe always said he wanted to retire then. Had Carl been a contender in 2005 and still on the BBC, maybe he'd have got the call instead of Brian Magee. But he wasn't.

well, you did. That's why you put an out of context Joe Calzaghe quote up as a way of belittling him

Mr RLewis,

No disrespect, Froch predicting Lacy to knock Calzaghe out was perhaps the consensus before the fight - I even predicted that. But Joe saying he would take Carl out in three rounds is stupid. It's actually borderline insane, whereas Carl's quote was a fair prediction.
