I used to love the old days before cross training etc when everyone used to declare their favoured fighting system when competing in the cage.

My favourite 'style' belonged to Gary Goodridge (a pioneer who fought in MMA & K1 for many, many years.)
His style was recorded as 'arm wrestling'.

Yes, Rashad was indeed an all american wrestler (whatever that means), but he very rarely goes to the ground or clinches, he seems to prefer to stand up and strike.

For those interested here is long time K1 stalwart, and World GP nearly man, Jermoe Le Banner in a recent boxing match.

He appears stiff, slow and too heavily muscled to make an effective switch to boxing at this late stage in his career (36 yrs old) but it is good to see him switch back to have a boxing match after years of straight kickboxing (and a little MMA.)

LeBanner was considered a hot boxing prospect back in the day. Don King signed him in around 1997 and had Don Turner work with him with the intention of promoting him as a serious heavyweight contender.

He obviously isn't going to go too far in the sport today with all the kickboxing and steroid induced injuries he has recieved.

Sylvia was basically a ufc champion by luck not skill. Everytime he had a fight with somone decent he lost.

And there have been a fair few boxers who fit that description, too. Would a 48-year-old MMA practitioner with only one or two boxing matches behind him have a chance against any of those in a boxing match? Bruce Seldon, say? Unlikely.

This is not to say I'm entering into the "which sport is better" debate (I don't have anything like enough knowledge of MMA), just that the inescapable fact is that a very old boxer who long ago ceased to be relevant in his own sport just owned someone who legitimiately won a major - in fact, the premier - belt in his own sport. Overall form or all-time ranking is irrelevant, he did win that title and you can't take it away from him.

Again, let's take Seldon, arguably the least-regarded world heavyweight boxing champion, and match him with, say, Ken Shamrock - well past his best but fondly remembered - in a boxing match. What's going to happen? I think we agree it will be a KO1, and not for the fighter competing outside his own sport...

I remember that. I was a teenager and that guy had supposedly achieved the official rank of ninja. I was like "oh shit, he's gonna wipe the floor with everybody!". And then a plain old kickboxer all but turned his head into a grease spot on the mat.
