Who impressed you

Post by Old bones Ian »

In the olympics what boxers showed that they could make ago at the pros.

i was impressed with the russian Alexei Tichtchenko , in the featherweight division, he did get a lucky break in one of the earlier rounds beating his oponent on a cut eye when behind on points.

In the rounds after that he showed some nice come foward skills and seemed to have some sting in his punches. He has nice movement and i think would have a easier time converting to the pros.

I quite liked the Yanks Dirrel and Ward (the Light Heavyweight gold medalist).

Heard alot about Potevkin (The Super Heavyweight gold medalist) but he looks like he lacks that spark, reminded me in style to Jirov (a bit one dimensional).

Khan is probably the most likely to make it in the pro's out of all of them, cause he was one of the only fighters who showed real KO power. This is not counting Kindelan who is probably to old to consider a pro move, but is one of the best fighters I have seen (whatever code). Undoubtedly he would have been a world champ.

Tajbert will make a good pro. He just faced the one exact style that is made to give him trouble when he faced that tall North Korean, he's a short counter puncher. I think Tajbert would have eaten the evential Gold medalist Titchenko alive, his pressure style would have been perfect for him.

Dirrel might be good in future. I don't know about Ward, I heard he trains with Chris Byrd and might start his career at heavy. He would just be another Chris Byrd, does anyone really want to see that? He fought pretty negatively in the games, he might not be too popular as a pro with his style.

I think he is already signed up with Universum, don't know if he will turn pro immediately but it is likely.

I liked the Cuban bantam weight.
Lovely boxer.

Khan, like STUJONES wrote would be a good tip for the pro game, but not just because he showed good power, I think he showed alot more important ingredient, he could work out an opponent. Who would agree that if the fight had been another 2-3 rounds Amir would have pulled it back.

Toneyevs - agree with all you said about Khan, apart from the above quote. Kindelan was just cruising in the 4th but still scored the same about of points as Khan. Just compare how many punches the two threw in that final round, I reckon Khan threw 3 times as much as Kindelan. One or two gaps were appearing as Khan was trying to close the gap, if there were a few more rounds, Kindelan would have punished him more than he did.

Kindelan is special, I don't think Khan will ever face an opponent again (amateur or pro) who could slip his punches as easily as Kindelan managed to. If anything it was Kindelan who had found out a way to beat Khan (remember he lost the first round).

I thought Solis had decent enough skills to make iti in the pro game.

Star of the games was Kindelan though - he would have been a great world champ in the pros - imagine seeing him against Pretty Boy...

problem is none of the Cubans will turn pro, unless they defect.

If they do defect ,, it can put there family at risk back in Cuba

Artayev was simply awesome. Hungry, tough and a clean, accurate puncher. Only 21 so could go places if he ditches the vest and headguard. Cuban Bantam Rigondeaux was beatiful to watch (especially having had him at 9/4 before the off!).

Maybe?
I just thought he was closing the gap.
Kindelan maybe was just cruising, maybe I was just being generous.
By the way who won the Barker cup?

Kindelan just cruised after he'd asserted himself in the second round. Khan closed him down very well though, showed nice tight defence and closed the gap.

I just got fed up watching boxers get into an exchange with a Cuban, landing more punches and winning the exchange, only to see a point go the Cuban as soon as they stepped back.

Sorry, but I just get the feeling the judges are in awe of the Cubans (I no way do I doubt the Cuban boxers' ability, they are generally superb technicians and this is the basis of my point) and that any boxer who boxes a Cuban is about six to eight points down before he even steps in the ring.

In one bout, this Cuban threw a hard left that hit this Thai lad's glove, which was about a foot away from his head... and yup... he got a point. Even "lovely left hand" came from Woodhall and Neilly, but the punch was nowhere near.

Alexei Tichtchenko looked terrific, a real exciting talent. He got that lucky break early on, but you got the feeling he was going to make the most of his second chance, and he did.

He'll make a perfect pro when he turns over, an excellent pressure fighter. Even when he was ahead in the last he kept rolling forward, unlike that Thai boxer who ran like a thief in the last round of the finals.

Rigondeaux was the best I saw, with Kindelan not far behind. Obviously Khan deserves a mention and Ward also impressed me.

Apparently it was the Kazakhstani, Bakhtar Artyev (69kg). Can't even remember seeing him to be honest...

He beat Saitov who won the Val barker four years ago. I only saw him in the final and he was OK I quess.
Andre Ward looked quite good at Light Heavy I thought.
