I am a chess writer and need help with verifying whether or not Max Euwe (who was Chess World Champion 1935-1937) was ever the European Amateur Heavyweight Boxing Champion, as is stated in numerous online bios of Euwe with no sources provided (eg. http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Ri ... /euwe.html 4th paragraph).
Any help much appreciated.
Max Euwe - Euro Amateur Heavyweight Champ 1920's??
Re: Max Euwe - Euro Amateur Heavyweight Champ 1920's??
He wasn't. He did box a bit, but only as a hobby.

Thank you, I did know for sure that he was a boxing enthusiast, and even found a picture of him boxing. Can I ask how you know he was never amateur champ? Are their records of the amateur championships from the 1920's?
Re: Max Euwe - Euro Amateur Heavyweight Champ 1920's??
Yes records exist for these championships. Apart from that, it would have been completely overlooked by contemporary Dutch press.

So it is known amongst boxing fans in the Netherlands that Euwe enjoyed boxing? Did he compete at all do you know? Also, t is often mentioned in bios of Euwe (along with the false info he was amateur champ) that he wore boxing gloves for some of his games in the 1948 Chess World Championship tournament, do you know anything about that? (It does seem very unlikely). Forgive all these questions - after many hours of futile searching it is exciting to finally find someone that can give me some answers!

I wouldn't call it common knowledge - Euwe is not that famous anymore. I did thoroughly research 20s Dutch boxing and I've never come across him within a boxing context. I'll see if I can find anything about him competing in boxing gloves, though I'd find that highly unlikely too.xlukex wrote:So it is known amongst boxing fans in the Netherlands that Euwe enjoyed boxing?
