Haye's pull out now makes sense

Post by finchy36 »

It was nothing to do with a bad back. Setanta couldn't pay his wedge so he pulled out for business reasons. I don't blame him. And before I get a reply about medical evidence, bad back and stress are the easiest ways to get a doc to sign you off as there is no way of proving it.

I'm just pissed off that we'll have to ppv it through sky when it happens and sky now have the monopoly

This is hardly earth-shattering news, it's been discussed endlessly on here since Haye pulled out

I never said it was earth-shattering - I never knew it was mentioned on here before. Time restraints mean I cannot get on here everyday - sorry about that

No problem, the possibility that Haye pulled out due to Setantas imminent demise has been discussed to death on here though

Well if he had gone ahead with the fight and beat Wlad, then he would be able to look forward to a multi million payday for his next fight. And would of been able to renegotiate a new TV deal for it as Setanta has gone bust.
Instead he's now looking at boxing for relative chump change.

If Haye wasn't injured , then it may of been worth the gamble to of taken on Wlad.

a lot can happen in a boxing match.it makes no sense to box wlad for nothing, whatever the options say....

What would a potentially devestating KO loss do to his bargaining power with HBO and Sky now that Setanta are kaput? Especially with a stable of fighters in tow.

The risk and reward dont tally, not even remotely. Haye made the numbers for the Wlad fight, that potential is still there, he just needs to regroup and move onto plan B.

If indeed this was a financial decision, then Haye made a good one. He would literally have been fighting for free as Setanta are unlikely to have had the spondoolis to pay him for his bout. Had he lost, he would have seriously taken a financial pummelling for nothing.

My worry now is that Haye doesn't stay active and waits in line for a shot at Wlad, which might not happen this year now.

Haye needs to get a few rounds against someone durable but beatable. I know it sounds risky, but would McCall not offer a decent workout. McCall has lost a step now and Haye should be able to keep him at bay for a decision, or maybe even bomb him out of there at this stage of McCall's career.

McCall would do Haye the world of good in terms of shaking off rust, but I doubt it'd do his rep any good. He's hot right now despite the pullout and a guaranteed 12 rounder with Haye having to play it safe wouldn't help to fuel public interest. On top of that, when was the last time Haye did 12 rounds? 3 years ago against a very ordinary cruiserweight. What if Haye gassed in the last 3? McCall wouldn't need an invitation if openings present themselves.

He needs to talk to HBO and set up a fight with Arreola as soon as possible. Line up all of Hayemaker's lead prospects on the undercard against good tests and get it on free HBO over there and SBO PPV here.

It would be a short and brutal fight with Haye looking spectacular because Arreola is as crude as they come. Make the fight in the states if they can, start to get Haye an american audience.

It isn't the best thing for Haye's maintenance as a fighter but it would certainly keep the train rolling while some kind of agreement is reached with sky to broadcast cards that dont neccesarily feature Haye.

Edit: Beating Arreola would also put him pretty close to the top of the queue to fight one of the Klitschko's. 2 birds.

I agree, Charlie, but I think the biggest crux would be getting Arreola's team to agree to the bout. They want low risk fights until they get Wladimir.

Precisely, McCall would gladly take the opportunity. A big explosive win over McCall would definetely turn heads.

He's 44.

And fought a Rugby League player in his last bout.

He's a good fight for a genuine up and comer, but Haye is trying to position himself way beyond McCall without actually taking on a risky fight.

Holyfield though older would resonate more, sell better and arguably offer less risk.

Who said over here? Oh me, yep, sorry.

Haye v Holyfield would sell in Germany as a lead fight, but certainly as chief support to Vitaly v Valuev.

However. I think Sky would back that fight here.

I don't imagine Holyfield is demanding millions any more.

As someone desperate to fight Valuev again it makes the perfect contest to support Vitali v Valuev.

Beating Holyfield wouldn't be any accomplishment for Haye. As good as Holyfield was, he's unlikely to pull off a win over someone so ambitious and hungry to prove himself as Haye is and the public knows it. It would just be a case of wheeling out a once-great fighter to get decimated by the younger generation.

I'm not detracting from Holyfield's legacy in any way, but his time has past. Sad as it is, and I am a huge Holyfield fan, his days as a contender are over.

But on the flipside of that coin with the heavyweight division the way it is, who CAN be considered a consider.

Holyfield's a risky fight, if Haye lost to Holyfield, that would be it for his championship ambitions imo, same goes for McCall. You'd have the name recognition, but nobody would give him credit for the win.

Haye's done a lot of talking/promoting and every fight's going to be a risk. If he's going to fight someone, it needs to be someone that a loss against isn't going to completely derail his credibility as a heavyweight threat.

If he's going to fight someone, assuming the Klits, Valuev and Povetkin are tied up, and if Arreola's people cant be persuaded by HBO, it should be the likes of Eddie Chambers, Samuel Peter, Lamon Brewster (Klitschko angle could be hyped) or Alexander Dimitrenko. A loss in that company wouldn't be as bad as a loss in veteran company.

If Haye really wanted to appeal to new fans he could take on Ruiz, and with a bit of luck, pull a Tua on him. Bad match-up though imo.

Other fights that should be avoided - Juan Carlos Gomez, Kevin Johnson (think he's fighting Solis next anyway) and any of the brit circuit, Williams, Harrison, etc.

I think Peter, shit as he is, is a bit of a live dog yet - he can still punch and he's still a bit of a brick wall. Gomez has skills and could embarrass haye. It's winnable for Haye, but Gomez is not without ambition himself and is a former top flight amateur.

in some ways it's not such a bad thing for haye all this.

he can fight here in england and get some money into his promotional set up.

he's the main draw and he's not had a fight since last year.

time to bring in an opponent and bash him up. :box:
