Q & A with Gary Davies

Back in April Gary Davies took his record to 9-2-1(7) when he won the British Bantamweight title with a seventh round KO of Matthew Edmonds. By his own admission it was the proudest moment in his life so far. You can bet that he won’t be giving it up lightly and his next quest will be to defend it twice so he can ultimately keep it. The first man who will attempt to stop him doing so will be Ian Napa on 24 July in Manchester. Napa 18-7(1) is more experienced than Davies having previously been European champion. However in Davies favour he is the younger, bigger and fresher man. It has the making of a classic boxer verses puncher match up. Here’s what he had to say.

Anson Wainwright - You will be making your first defence of the British title against Ian Napa on the 24 July. What can you tell us this fight?
Gary Davies - All I can say is its going to be the fight of the year, its going to be the classic puncher vs the boxer, and its going to come down to who wants it more.

Anson Wainwright - Your fight with Napa looks like a classic boxer puncher match up. Is that how you see it and how do you see the fight going?
Gary Davies - yes but what people forget is I can also box for 12 rounds, I think it will either be an early night for me by stoppage or a 12 round points decision.

Anson Wainwright - How proud were you to win the British title when you beat Matthew Edmonds?
Gary Davies - it was the best moment of my life so far and as opened up so many doors for me and has given me financial backing for my wedding next year, it is all I ever wanted since I put on a pair of boxing gloves and it was my dream fulfilled that night, if I achieve anything else it is a bonus.

Anson Wainwright - You started out your career at Featherweight but have now moved down to Bantamweight. How come you decided to do this?
Gary Davies - I have always been a bantamweight, its just I never got the right fights with enough notice at that weight and always had to give weight away to secure fights.

Anson Wainwright - Earlier in your career you had gaps of inactivity, could you tell us why there were gaps in your career?
Gary Davies - Yes I’ve always worked full time and found it hard to get motivated for fights as I earn a good income from work, and its tougher now without a sponsor.

Anson Wainwright - Your quite big for the weight, how easily do you make Bantamweight?
Gary Davies - I make the weight easily enough with enough notice by training twice a day.

Anson Wainwright - How did you get into Boxing?
Gary Davies - My friend Shane booth was boxing for St Helens ABC and asked me to go down and have a go one night and it just went from there really.

Anson Wainwright - What are your goals in Boxing?
Gary Davies - I have achieved my goal in boxing but like I said earlier if I achieve anything else I will die a happy man

Anson Wainwright - Who was your boxing hero growing up and why?
Gary Davies - Peter Culshaw, his movement and accuracy was incredible I trained alongside him in my early career and looked up to him.

Anson Wainwright - What do you enjoy doing when your not fighting?
Gary Davies - Spending time with my fiancée and my 2 Labradors Ben and Jerry

Anson Wainwright - Finally at the moment the boxing scene seems to be very good in Liverpool with David Price, Tony Bellew, Tony Quigley & the Smith Brothers etc. What can you tell us about this?

Gary Davies - Yeah we’ve got a good few lads up and coming now and I just cant wait till they fight for titles and Liverpool will prove its status as the best English City for boxing.

It could be somewhat of a passing of the torch fight.

Full credit to Napa for taking this fight on the back of losing his European title. He's i never a Banatamweight he'd be Flyweight and lower if he was Mexican or Asian.

Should be a Great fight Davies vs Napa both at Different ends of there Career, for someone that dose'nt know boxing. Looking at both of there Last fights Davies Should Smash Napa but i think a different Napa will turn up, he loses where does he go? Davies also showed he can box in his last fight.. I think Gary woud find it a lot easier to beat The Euro Champ then Napa, Style's makes fights and Napa vs Davies should be a Cheaker

glad to see ure still going to fight martin as uve had some bad luck with opponents recently, shame heagney never came off because that would of been a good fight
