5 fighters to beat Roy Jones
we've all seen people on MB's claim that RJJ was unbeatable due to his alien-like speed, etc etc etc
being discerning fans, of course we know better. pick any weight you like and name your 5.
mine are:
Calzaghe at 168. I know their peaks didn't coincide. I know JC's opposition in the late 90s early 00's was nothing like enough to give you confidence for him in the ring with RJJ.
I also know that JC was bigger, faster, and more skilled than most of the stiffs RJJ beat at 168, and most definitely fitter than anyone Roy fought. probably able to fight a better pace over 12 than RJJ himself. hell, if i was betting on this i wouldn't put my own money on JC, but i'd back him to give RJJ his most difficult night by far pre-Tarver.
Bob Foster too much length, good enough handspeed, WAY too much power. one shot and its basically over
Ezzard Charles too much of everything IMO
Marvin Johnson watch Roy run, folks
John Conteh actually would make a good hypo, Conteh's superb jab and textbook skills don't len themselves to being hit by unorthodox leaping left hooks from the hip. I could see Roy getting neatly jabbed through all that unorthodoxy.

Michael Spinks- Not only beat him, but always beat him. Long & awkward with a great jab and straight right hand. Roy's worst nightmare.
Archie Moore- There just isn't any Light Heavy he isn't capable of beating.
Ezzard Charles- Just a better fighter
Holman Williams & Charley Burley- Plenty of the athletic gifts Roy had and more technically sound.
You could make this more of a 40 or 50.

the fighters listed so far are great, except calzaghe, but claims that some of these fighters would beat jones every time they stepped in a ring with him is embarrassing. jones is too fast for the fighters listed. charles would stand the best chance but again, jones' speed would pull him through imo.

I only said that about Michael Spinks and I stand by it. He would wear Roy out.

Re: 5 fighters to beat Roy Jones
I can name several opponents, from various weight classes, who would have defeated Jones. Jones fought from MW to HW, and I can give you anywhere from five to ten opponents from each of those weight classes, if not more, that could have pasted him. But, since Jones made his career at 175 mainly, I can say Billy Conn, Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Gene Tunney, Bob Foster and Michael Spinks would have been the favorite to beat him, and more than likely would have.

Re: 5 fighters to beat Roy Jones
If it's just five men, this is an easy list at Light-Heavyweight.
The task is decidedly more difficult at Super-Middle. I might be inclined to say impossible, if we're to list five who we think would be favourite against Jones.
Bjerm, you should never be permitted to discuss Roy. How do you type & shake those pom-poms simultaneously, anyway?

Re: 5 fighters to beat Roy Jones
- Roy is more than capable of beating any listed in the thread save the better heavies, but his career a bit mysterious in the latter half where he scarcely either had a challenge or could be bothered to pursue a challenge.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Michael Spinks- Not only beat him, but always beat him. Starting with your list, Spinks is always going to be problematic with his size, chin, and style, but conversely, Spinks would have no experience or training to prepare him for Roy. Moore very savvy, reviewing tapes of Roy I think he could set some traps better than the others, but Roy is so much faster than all mentioned and esp Arch. This is no babe in set on the mountain for sacrifice like some of you are making.
Charles with his skillset and decent speed would be a major problem. I don't see Williams and Burley in the class of the above at LH, and they sure ain't beatin' Roy at middle I can assure you.
Modern peoples are generally ignorant of history, even modern history, and I think this board has forgotten that only a few years back after Ruiz, Roy was considered by many to be the best fighter ever. Thing about moderns is they tend to overrate hyped fighters of their eras, and usually not knowing much about history, fighters become like teams where my team is always better than yours and yours' better than mine. Then they like to tear down their posters and make room for the new ones.
Nobody knows who Roy can and can't beat, but I would point out that 4 of the 5 you listed are of the same era, and of that era only Moore and Charles are truly elite. Their records are more extensive in a more competitive era, but consider that Roy grew up in an era where the money was such that title fights had to be more carefully scheduled given the stakes. The actual training and development for specific fights tended to be longer and more expensive. So, in his era, Roy got to maximize his potential instead of being worn out by a couple of three ham and egg bouts in a month which were basically spars for guys like Moore and Charles so they could pay bills.
We make fun of Roy's garbage men and other muny type workers he was beating up, but remember that Moore, Burley, and Walcott were garbage men, Braddock a dock worker, Willard a ranch hand, Liston a leg breaker, Glenn Johnson a carpenter, and so on. It was a long road up the ladder for these guys and they are applauded, so Roys' LH opposition may not be as legendary, but it can't be dismissed out of hand.

The only person claiming Roy as 'the best fighter ever' after Ruiz was Max Kellerman, the same guy who had touted Judah as a future surefire ATG Hall of Famer.

Well now that you've assured me, I feel foolish. Saying that williams and Burley weren't elite definitely proves your own point about modern people being ignorant to Boxing history.BroughtonRulesRefuge wrote:- Roy is more than capable of beating any listed in the thread save the better heavies, but his career a bit mysterious in the latter half where he scarcely either had a challenge or could be bothered to pursue a challenge.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Michael Spinks- Not only beat him, but always beat him. Who said Roy wasn't capable of beating people? Save me with Michael Spinks. Did you even read it?
Re: 5 fighters to beat Roy Jones
jones is so unpopular with most fans i think due to his arrogance and just for the fact that he was really good. roy jones himself has said that ray robinson was pound for pound the greatest ever but when asked who would have won between him and ray, jones said he would have won because he would be a little too big for robinson.dempseyfire wrote:The only person claiming Roy as 'the best fighter ever' after Ruiz was Max Kellerman, the same guy who had touted Judah as a future surefire ATG Hall of Famer.
a lot of people on these boards will dog jones but he's an ATG because he was the best of his era. the fighter of the decade award proves that. he was voted the winner of that award by boxing writers who despise him. jones' problem historically speaking is that he never really had any big fights. he was just really good.

Jones is definitely an ATG. Whitaker was the fighter of that decade as far as I'm concerned.
Re: 5 fighters to beat Roy Jones
whitaker finished a very close second in the voting according to reports followed by holyfield. whitaker might have won the award but the losses to de la hoya (i had it even) and trinidad no doubt hurt him.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:Jones is definitely an ATG. In the Ibro list of greatest p4p fighters, Moore, 17th and Charles, 12th with the same rankings on Ibro 25 greatest fighters list, Moore tops their LH list with Charles next and Charles also ranked 17th best heavy.
Burley the 19th ranked welt and 10th ranked middle and Williams unranked. Now, who's "truly elite" here? You have two picks, and your first two picks don't count

LOL, you gave nothing worth reading. Both of those "non elite" fighters were elite enough to beat Archie Moore. Burley brutalized him.
A guy ranked top 20 in two weight classes isn't elite? A lobotomy would probably help you.

BRR is a boxing neophyte. Prior to discovering a copy of The Ring someone had left on the bus a few months ago, his sport of choice was Buckaroo.
Recently he showed his in-depth knowledge of the fight game by claiming bigger gloves equal more punching power.
If you want to know the best way to get all the paraphenalia on the donkey's back in Buckaroo, BRR is your man. Anything to do with boxing though, forget it.

Yeah, they beat Arch before he became the Ol' Mongoose and made the LH division his personal symphony that he wrote his own scores for and conducted as he wished.
No different from Jimmy Leto and Eddie Dolan sending Burley back to the first grade.
If you can't distinguish between "truly elite" and elite, perhaps you belong on the Lipton thread with the rest of the gang of four or five who aren't really interested in discussing boxing as much they are having their private super duper fraternity where they talk real smacky smack behind their keyboards and do other naughty boy stuff.
To bring the topic back to point, there are few historical fighters in Roy's natural divisions I would pick over him on an odds basis. He's a smallish framed fighter with freakish power and speed, a rare student of the science, always showed up in shape, and dropped more fighters than he dropped rounds. Since almost all were naturally larger men by height or frame, he was the epitome of what pound for pound stood for when it was first conceptualized for another slight freakish fighter of note, SRRobinson.

First off, your long winded posts do nothing but prove your ignorance. As a stupid individual with little or no insight and an obvious kindergarten education in the sweet science, keep it short and people find humor in it. This long winded stuff is pointless and I can only speak for myself, easily scanned and ignored.
Secondly, you clearly have no concept of what elite is. It also is completely irrelevant to the thread. Funny you mention Robinson, ask him if Burley was elite.
Thirdly, do you have anything to offer in here besides a lot of useless words? Is Roy unbeatable in your world? What is your five?
Let me guess, I've only been here for a minute but you seem to sleep next to the nutsacks of the Klitschko's. Clearly they are the only two super human forces that could possibly beat roy jones. Don't you have another thread to go blindly hug them in and leave this to the grown ups?
Re: 5 fighters to beat Roy Jones
I'd agree with Spinks. The right hand would win this fight every time. Foster's best shot would prove too much too.
Charles and Moore, obvioulsy... Johnson would win too.
Not sure about Tunney.
Langford would win early when he was at 175...
Greb would win a decision.
I'd expect as an outsider Qawi qould beat him.
Jones was the best since Spinks. A top fighter but with way too many question marks.

Already split off 3 from your 5 as having the best chances, but nobody IS gonna beat Roy Jones. They only have greater or lesser chances, but some of the names being tossed around with such certainty are simply schoolboy ridiculous.
Roy in his brief middle career was Ibro's 15 ranked middle and 6th ranked LH as I recall, much higher than Burley's rankings. The eliteness of fighters has everything to do with how they are ranked and matched in the real world, the one you apparently don't belong to.
