They laid off/fired the 5 women who handled the media, marketing, and website for USA Boxing so don't count on it anytime soon.

what a mess and all the drama i watched, heard, and listened too in denver,
it has me wondering if they will ever get there sh*# together,
sounds like a bunch of power hungry politicians on a hunt for more,
i am not going to say too much more, but USA Boxing is all a bunch of crap if you ask me ... :x
i hope one day it will be about the athletes not the people running it.

USA Boxing is a sinking ship, it wouldn't surprise me if we see more guys going pro. Not that the pro business is much better, but at least you get paid to put up with some of this baloney. They need to get straightened up real soon if they hope to keep the talent around.

Many of the young pros regret turning pro and wish they would have waited and stayed amateur for at least another year or two.

I don't doubt it, 18 is pretty young to be a professional, you're not fully matured physically or mentally. But I'm sure it's hard to stay an amateur when you need money and USA Boxing is not providing you with that much financial support. Guys in Europe seem to be getting many more incentives to stay amateur.

I won't list names as it won't help them now and a lot of the info was discussed privately. If any pros would like to voluntary post, that would be great.

They are in for a rude awakening if BAD decisions are making them turn pro. Somebody better wake up and smell the coffee.

My thought exactly. It always amazes me when guys say they are done with the BS of the amateurs and want to turn pro. Someone is selling them a bridge or swamp land if they think there isn't more of the same in the pros.

ok, maybe these kids shouldnt turn pro. i was thinking that. once you leave the amateurs, you are gone. period. aint nothing like the amateurs. but the bad decisions, and judges giving each other high fives doesnt help. i guess win or lose, you fight the best, you get the experience. thanks for the enlightment good peoples. :box: :TU:

This is Travis Peterkin's father and I agree young kids should be careful turning pro too early. Kids come to win and to just take a bout from a kid is not good. But hey, my son has a home in USA Boxing and I am forever grateful. We took the good with the bad many times, but you know what? Its all good. There is still room to get better. Travis will be fine. He is a tough kid and the road to the gold continues.

Excellent reply, Mr. Peterkin. We need more fathers/coaches who think like you do. :D BTW, does Travis have a brother who lives, used to live in Southern California?

Yes, my oldest son Za-Quan lives in Cali. He returned home for a while in NY, now he is in Cali again. 22 yrs old. Boxed in the ringside in 04. Won the Califorina State belt. Boxed at Durango with Coach Greg. Would love to see him in the gym again. Has amazing speed. Za-Quan started the Peterkin's boxing again, since my amateur career in the 1980's. Travis was a little boy playing Pop Warner football at 8 yrs. old. Trav would tag along just to watch his big brother box then eventually he got involved. Thanks BoxMel for pointing that out. USA boxing bought my sons together at the ringside, 2004. I am forever grateful. Peterkin's from the east and west coast got to see each other fight in competition. I know Za-Quan always spoke of Melanie Ley. He thought the world of her. My son Travis had a hard road at times in USAB, but its OK. He won his fair share of tournaments. We just want people to know we are home with USAB. I also have another cousin who had to wait his turn in boxing and dealt with the struggle. His name is Larry Holmes. You know Lil Mama, who sang Lip Gloss, and is on America's Best Dance Crew? She is my little cousin.

My husband was the referee in the bout several years ago when Za-Quan's opponent went into a coma. I tried to stay in touch with him but he disappeared. I'm glad to hear he's back. Is he still boxing? If so, where. Please tell him I said hello the next time you talk to him. :D

You must be Mrs. Melanie Ley. I spoke to at the PAL's in 2005. Za lost a close one out there. Thanks for your support. I would like for Za-Quan to go pro. Support is a great thing in USAB. Thanks.

That's me. :D Personally, I would rather see Za-Quan get a year or two of solid amateur experience before turning pro. He's got some excellent basics, but needs to compete more - just my opinion. 8)

Thank you Mrs. Ley. You are correct. In fact, I am trying to contact Za-Quan right now. I am proud of my boys. Both can be stubborn, but I can always talk to them. Both are southpaws. I always taught them to respect people like how we want to be respected. Sometimes I thought people didn't understand us. We was taught throughout my family to go hard forever. That's just how we was built. We Peterkin's just want to survive the game, that's all. I also have a 16 yr. old daughter who is starting college this fall, when she should only be a junior in high school. I think I did an OK job. I will tell Za-Quan you asked about him. He is in Cali, so I'm sure he will be happy to hear you asked about him. I know I am. Once again, Thankyou.

This is a plug for my son, Jordan Shimmell, and the sport of amateur boxing. Jordan Shimmell was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and has a lot of family and friends who live in Wisconsin. The Sheboygan Press just printed an article about Jordan, which we appreciate. The link to the article is:
http://www.sheboyganpress.com/article/2 ... /906270560.
Jordan and I were also on a talk radio show this morning which is hosted by a big fan of boxing, John "the Hoss" Perry. The show is The Locker Room Show on WTKG - 1230 AM in Grand Rapids. It was a nice interview. As a big fan and supporter of amateur boxing I try to plug the sport any chance I get. I wish more coaches, officials and boxers would do the same. We can use all the positive publicity we can get to bring the sport back to prominence.

our great national champ just quit on national tv. no ref to save him. no ref to hold his hand. no ref to let him rest, no ref to help him points wise. if this was the amateurs victor ortiz would have won and dc boxing throws him a parade. no slight to you guys..... whatever..... in the amateurs victor ortiz gets saved. but in the pros, no headgear, and you take those punches, and he showed his manhood on tv. he can dish it but cant take it. once he seen he couldnt ko this boy, he filled out his k-mart job application between rounds. there may be more victor ortiz's coming out. get saved in the amateurs, get beat down in the pros. the way to beat a champ is to beat him down. by the way, how is abraham han doing? he was impressive leading up to the trials. :box: anybody can hit, but when you get hit, can you take it? al simpson, no disrespect, we all know you fair but firm. i just addressed a old rumor. but like i said, anybody can hit, its when you get hit. get the sheboygan press on it. do we have sheboygan fighters who are tops, all-time? not in sheboygan. didnt think so. :shame:
