His employers don't have the gall, or the knowledge, to post. A carved-in-stone question at an interview is "Is this a new post or...."
I've turned down good jobs when an employer has slagged off the last employee or obviously skipped round the question. It still works that way for those of a certain generation. I like to label it decency.

Just for the record Bennie, when I was interviewed originally (when I got to the final two and Tris beat me to the job), Tony was still at BN. Secondly, when I was asked if I wanted to join the team 3 months later, I had no idea Tony was leaving. Obviously when I started, he wasn't here. All this is just for the record however – I don't think I would have turned the job down if I had known the 'facts' (which, I must say, are still a little cloudy for me). It's a dream job for a lifelong boxing fan and prospective journo; if Tony was MY brother I'd have turned it down. What you have to realise is (well, you don't HAVE to, but I'd like you to) that I have never met Tony and have no fixed opinion on him, other than the fact I enjoyed his writing when I was a BN reader. Your bile is misdirected; I didn't sack him, have never criticised him and am just doing my best in a job and industry which I love. But I don't expect this post to make any difference to you and it's sad because I reckon we would have got on if we'd worked here at the same time.

I was a staffer there in 1983, when you really were a 'boy'. Nick Bond (a staffer) has clearly told you the facts. It had everything to do with Tony's brilliance and sheer jealousy on the part of Claude Abrams. Don't get too good at your job son and threaten Abrams' mediocrity.

Ian, with the greatest respect I think you're completely missing the point here. I suspect I'm not alone in having issues with the way the title has been run (and you've showcased a perfect example of that in your post), but where I and many others feel Bennie has been completely out-of-order is in his constant digs at a young journo who is learning his trade and is displaying the sort of passion and commitment that should be celebrated rather than berated.
If Bennie was posting constructive critiques on BN such as the one you've made, I'd welcome it wholeheartedly, but I've got no time for the bitter rantings that he opts for instead. I would have thought you, with your teaching background, would share the general distaste with his put-downs of a young talent, purely because he has an issue with the BN management team.

I have criticised the editor on numerous occasions for his failure on criticial issues, such as the one outlined in this thread. In fact, I cancelled my annual subscription over one of these issues and have never renewed it.
I have also questioned the relevance of some of BN's content in the internet age and have simply identified clear trends in the publishing industry that suggest that all print publications have to evolve or die - and if you think I'm exaggerating this, check out http://www.magazinedeathpool.com and absorb stats such as the fact that 525 magazines folded in North America in 2008.

Nowhere on this thread or anywhere else have I praised either Boxing News or its web offering, I have simply defended what I and others perceive to be an ongoing campaign against an individual who has done nothing to merit some of the broadsides that have been aimed in his direction.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, when you post on boxing matters I love to read what you've got to say - it's invariably insightful and thought-provoking. When you post on BN matters, I find the opposite, and, ironically, given one of your previous posts, I find them lacking in decency.

No hate from me. I've never met you, though I've read some of your stuff. I feel sorry for you, if anything; it can't be nice being so bitter all the time. What I don't understand is why if Tony has accepted whatever happened with dignity (he doesn't appear to post), why can't you? I'm sure he's more than capable of fighting his own battles if he wants to. Isn't life too short for this vendetta?

So for the next 16 hours or so Bennie is free to take pot-shots at an opponent who is not around to defence themselves. Some would say that's his speciality, but not me.

For the record I think Flexen's articles, writing is very, very good and he is a good addition to an already good team.

People are right - we should encourage our young (seriously he looks about 12 lol) not slag it off, or take the 'old guard' attitude.

Saw something similar from Buncey a while ago in BM about 'paying your dues' - its all a little bit unneccessary
