Tyson Fury hunting Big Bad John

Heavyweight sensation Tyson Fury is hot on the trail of English Champion “Big Bad” John McDermott after the British Boxing Board of Control ordered that the bout must take place before the end of November.

Purse bids for the bout have been ordered for July 8th and Fury says he can’t wait to get his hands on McDermott. The 6 foot 9 inch Manchester heavyweight has won all 6 of his pro fights since turning pro last December and maintained a 100% KO ratio on the process. His next outing comes at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on July 18th when he appears on the undercard of the Danny McIntosh – Nathan Cleverly British Light Heavyweight title fight.

The Hennessy Sports event is live on ITV4 and Fury hopes a win at the York Hall will secure a crack at McDermott’s English title. “I’ve been looking for John McDermott for a while now,” revealed Fury.

“He’s been offered the fight before but turned it down but now that the fights been ordered by the Board he surely can’t chicken out again. They call him ‘Big, Bad, John’ and that certainly sums him up. He’s a big lump and he’s not very good but he has that English title and he’s pushed Danny Williams close on a couple of occasions lately for the British title. I think it’s a natural eliminator for the British title so hopefully the Board will make it for a final eliminator as well as the English title.”

Meanwhile Fury has laughed off claims from Derek “Del Boy” Chisora that he “wouldn’t get out bed” for the kind of money he was being offered to fight Fury. The Finchley boxer is currently serving a suspension from the sport for biting opponent Paul Butlin in his last outing and Fury says he’s not being missed.

“It’s not the first time his big mouth has got him into trouble,” said Fury. “My advice to Derek would be to stay in bed because he’ll be a lot safer there. I don’t think he’d fight me for all the money in the world. He was at my last fight with Scott Belshaw and he got to see me up close and personal and you could tell he doesn’t fancy it. I’m told that he couldn’t take Belshaw’s body punches in sparring so how would he cope with mine?”

A clash of unbeaten fighters tops the bill at the York Hall on July 18th with Danny McIntosh and Nathan Cleverly squaring off for the British Light Heavyweight title. The undercard features former British and European Champion Jon Thaxton alongside Fury and Ireland’s European Union Lightweight Champion Andy Murray.

Hot prospects Steve O’Meara, Dwayne Lewis, Lee Purdy, Del Rogers and Bobby Ward also feature on an action packed night of championship boxing. Tickets (£35 Unreserved and £70 Ringside) are available from the Ticketline box office on 0844 888 4402 or via www.ticketline.co.uk.

Though the jury is still out on Fury....We do know McDermott has 'bottled it' before. If Fury is to amount to anything frankly he should be kicking seven shades out of the likes of McDermott.

Not sure. Stan could REALLY whack and was never dull (a Danny McAlinden type) but just lacked a chin. If Fury could whack or hold a great shot (and I mean a great shot), he would ride out the rough spots and come through. I was looking at Fury's career the other day and he didn't seem to get the breaks. He was one of those 'unlucky' fighters.

I think McDermott will be to expierenced for him and will KO him late as Fury hasnt gone past 5 rounds I doubt he will stop him before that as McDermott has a good chin and reasonable good staminia

McDermott is a poster boy for how poor the UK heavyweight scene had gotten. He is overweight, woefully out of shape and has very poor movement in the ring.

Tyson, whilst not the second coming of his namesake, will have far, far too much for McDermott and force a stoppage by the middle rounds.

I remember seeing John Fury box (both on TV and live) and, to be honest, he wasn't up to much. Don't get me wrong, he was a huge, intimidating-looking bloke and I have no doubt that he was very effective on the cobbles. But from what I saw he lacked both the skills and the conditioning to be a top pro. I remember Fury losing to an 18-year-old Adam Fogerty on Fight Night and he seemed a bit out of condition and to run out of gas. Some years later I watched him fight Neil Malpass for the Central Area title. Although Malpass had been a good prospect as a youngster by the time he fought Fury he was basically a journeyman. But Malpass had the basics that his opponent didn't - a good orthodox style and a jab. Fury was clearly outpointed.
Yeah, Fogarty and Malpass gave new meaning to the term 'snail-like'. Did Fury drop out after Malpass?

Your right he is disgracefully out of shape but I feel he gained expierence from fighting (and very nearly beating) Danny Williams twice I feel he can use his expierence and take Fury into the latter rounds and KO'ing him but for sure if Fury got a few more rounds under his belt he could easily beat McDermott but I feel its a bit soon for him

McDermott's appearance suggests a lack of application outside of the ropes. He seems to do the trip comfortably enough though. He's done 10 rounds twice against Gammer and Krence and also gone 24 rounds with Danny Williams.

Good point Ben, he has got alot of rounds under his belt.
I'd see this as an excellent match-up, John has got ambition still and won't be there to absorb a pounding without throwing something back.
I still feel Fury doesn't have 1 punch power, he's only floored 1 guy with head shots. And his left hook needs alot of work.
plus points for Fury are his uppercut and he goes to the body very well for a heavyweight.

I think it will be closer than anyone gives McDermott credit for.

That said, Fury will win on a late stoppage / retirement.

I like Fury and consider myself a fan of the big 'un :D

Why are alot on here running McDermott down so much? He didn't give williams bad fights. He's never been in a stinker, he's not got a bad attitude, he dont hype himself up being all flash and stating he's something he's not. To be honest I dont no what all the hype is about with Fury, I wouldn't be suprised if McDermott beat Fury.

fury should fight the irish unbeaten heavyweight Coleman Barrett, whos also a gypsy and is a cousin of the great Irish olympian Francie. He is about 8-0 and apparently has great potential, and I'd fancy him to take fury down a peg or two.
After seeing McDermott's shocking performance in his second chance against a Danny Williams on his last legs, I reckon Fury has a great chance, but definitely him against barrett would be a cracker.

And Hennesey needs it to take place before the end of the year too, because unfortunately he doesn't have a TV deal for 2009 yet

Tyson wins this easily for me, KO2 or 3.

Tyson Fury looking for English and Irish title double

Post by HS Press »

Tyson Fury looking for English and Irish title double

Heavyweight sensation Tyson Fury wants to have both the English and Irish title belts wrapped around his waist in the coming months. The undefeated Manchester giant has been nominated by the British Boxing Board of Control as the mandatory challenger for John McDermott’s English heavyweight title with the bout ordered to take place by the end of November.

However Fury’s strong Irish roots mean that he’s also eligible for an Irish title and he has his sights firmly set on that belt as well. “It would be great to be the English and Irish Heavyweight Champ at the same time. That would be pretty unique and I’m very proud of my Irish roots. My Dad was born in Tuam in County Galway and my grandmother on my Mum’s side was a Tipperary woman so it would be great to fight for the Irish title.”

Fury returns to the ring at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on July 18th as he bids to stretch his perfect record to 7 straight wins. The bout is on the undercard of the Danny McIntosh – Nathan Cleverly British Light Heavyweight title fight with the Hennessy Sports event live on ITV4.

Last time out Fury scored a devastating second round KO over touted Belfast prospect Scott Belshaw but much to Fury’s disappointment the Irish title was not on the line. “I was hoping that the Belshaw fight could have been for the Irish title because I thought it was worthy of it but you need to have been in a scheduled 8 rounder to fight for the Irish belt and the Belshaw fight was my first.”

The Irish Heavyweight title has been inactive since Mike Tyson conqueror Kevin McBride won it in 1997 and Fury wants to bring it back to life again.
The title was first won in 1890 by Galway’s Peter Maher who would later go on to win the World title and Fury believes he can follow in Maher’s footsteps almost 120 years later.

“It hasn’t been fought for since McBride won it 12 years ago but it has a great tradition so it would be great to see the title active again. I want to win as many titles as I can in this game. I’d love to start out with the Irish and English titles and then move on to British, Commonwealth and European titles before going on to the world scene.”

As usual Fury is not shy in naming some prospective Irish title opponents. “There are actually a couple of unbeaten Irish heavyweights out there who you’d think would jump at the chance of fighting for the Irish title. Declan Timlin and Coleman Barrett are both unbeaten in 7 fights and they’re both from Galway but like everyone else I don’t think they want to know about it.

“The challenge is out there for them so if they want it then we can get it on for the Irish title as soon as possible. I’ll take on any Irish heavyweight out there, all I want is the opportunity to fight for the Irish title.”

Tyson’s trainer and uncle Hughie Fury is even more forthcoming about his nephew Irish title chances. “When Tyson was an amateur he was a member of the Smithboro club in County Monaghan but none of the Irish Super heavyweights wanted to know about him and it will be the same in the pro’s. He’d fight Timlin and Barrett in the same night, they’d be no match for him.”

Fury’s next outing comes on July 18th with a clash of unbeaten fighters topping the bill at the York Hall as Danny McIntosh and Nathan Cleverly square off for the British Light Heavyweight title. The undercard also features former British and European Champion Jon Thaxton and Ireland’s European Union Lightweight Champion Andy Murray.
