Jewish world champions.

Post by stujones »

Anybody wish to win a T shirt.

Over at another forum, there has been a debate about Dimitry Salita - you know the Ukrainian Jewish prospect making some waves in America.

The moderator of the forum has asked the question who was the last Jewish fighter to win a world title. By Jewish he is refering to a practising Jew who has been a Jew for most of his life. So the likes of Judah doesn't count.

Now, apparently the answer was a Italian lightheavy named Mike Rossman - although the moderator has some doubts as he had a star of David tattoed, which is apparently prohibited.

Anyway, the author thinks that last Jewish world champion is way before Rossman. Anybody know the answer - if you do you can win a T shirt.

Here's the thread if you want to give the moderator the answer.I thought it would be quite interesting to see your responses here aswell.

I thought Fabrice Benichou, who won a World title for France in the late 1980's was Jewish.

If the answer is prior to Rossman, then I'd guess at one of the Algerians, Alphonse Halimi or Robert Cohen. Hard to think of any more post war.
