Sutherland Tonight****Spoiler****

Post by teddy007 »

I have said it before and will say it agin, there is something missing with sutherland everytime I have seen him. He doesn't have enough guile or sharpness with his punches and even though he punches hard but not as hard as some think, without them 2 attributes he wont go past European level. Wins tko 4, good opponent but Sutherland simply aint fast enough, or sharp enough and that cannot be taught.

I think they're looking at matching him with Jim Rock for the Irish title sometime soon. From six rounders to a ten round scrap with a proven veteran could be a big ask, but an exciting prospect for the err....exciting prospect!

i do rate him highly but you are right, he didnt really seem to have spring in his movement or snap in his punches, but theres power there for sure..... i was getting a bit worried when he was starting to get caught, but hopefully he will learn from it.

im glad to see how much he stepped up his boxing and head movement when he realised this guy wasn't going to just lay down, and i think its best he has a test now rather than in ten fights time when hes in with someone good enough to take advantage of his inexperience :TU:

hope he does well and im sure he will :D

I was quite surprised how easy he was to hit, think he was a bit to over eager to please
the better the oppision the better he will be defence wise&all round
its still only early days...

i dont think he hits that hard. hes never put an opponent down.imo he lacks handspeed and is prone to a right hand.....but im irish and i still think he will do something....come on daz! :DD and also i think we should give the ukranian a bit of credit, he was tough and wasnt as bad as his record suggests :box:

Just a good solid British champion fighter is what I think he will be... Too slow, and doesn't punch with snap - is just a strong man.

Similar faults as with John Murray, but not as good technically.

Also at 27 I can't see him getting much better, I def rate Degale as a better prospect

Looks like he could be pulled from the Sunderland show after sustaining a cut on his right cheek. It was an old cut sustained in sparring and was visible at the press conference, re-opened on the night. Maloney said in his post fight interview that they would monitor it over the next few day before making a decision.

Sutherland is limited. He is simply limited. Should beat the likes of Rock but Degale would have fun in there with Sutherland. I think Sutherland just isn't that good and I'm usually good with my judgement on prospects. I expect Sutherland to get beaten within his next few fights, depending on how good his opponent is. He's fighting garbage so far so that's why he's getting KOs. He'll get done soon enough. His talk of fighting like B-Hop is laughable for someone of his style.

Nah, didn't look great at all. Kind of reminds me of a poor man's Robin Reid. Strong, stiff and a little robotic.

Good opponent for him tonight though. Had he not been stopped, I think the Eastern Euro would have pushed Sutherland hard over the distance. Still, if Sutherland was anything special, he'd be getting rid of these kind of guys, right?

Just let him have a few more fights, against better opposition, and see how it goes for him.

The Reid analogy aint bad, Steve Robinson comes to mind too. But its a learning curve and we should all be reminded he beat DeGale several times in the ams.

It's all irrelevant at this stage, because he's still a novice. It was the other way round with him and Degale after their first fights. Sutherland looked good, Degale did not. People's views change with the weather in boxing. We'll see where they are both at after 15 or so fights.

He is a hard hitter, but his defence is poor and is always in range when he's caught. I think you can never truly judge a prospect though until he they have had 12-15 fights. Remember he was an amateur for a long, long time. Lets see where he is in 12 months.

Agree with this.

Too many 'doom mongers' on here who quickly want to right a prospect off so they can say 'I told you so' in a few years time.

Suterland needs to be allowed time to develop as a pro. Remember all those writing Macklin off after he appeared slow footed and short on ideas losing to Facey? The same merry band now salivate at his powerful recent performances...

I am unsure where Sutherland's career will ultimately see him rise to but I wont wite him off after a handful of pro fights.

Some good points but i have said this from before he turned pro, I dont think he's as good as others have made out.

Unreal some boxing ppl Sutherland had a bad day at the office he took a few shots as a novice pro does he is better learning now than in 5 fights up the road after the fight Darren new what he had done wrong never moved his head as for Deagle piss he will still be the best prospect out of the Olympins he still stopped the guy maybe cant get himself motivated for the Eastern European Bum they guy was tough last night a will put money you dont see him in with Deagle Sutherland did go matcho last night but its all in the game & learning

For the first time I am going to agree completely with you.

I honestly believe Suterhland looks huge at the weight and I honestly believe Light Heavyweight is the weight he is best suited - there are fighters a lot quicker than he is at Super Middle at world level.

I was at York Hall too last night. That Ukranian was clearly a very strong tough nut. I wonder if they knew what a handful he would be?

I think it's good that Sutherland was being properly tested even if that wasn't the intention. He had to adjust when he realised he wasn't tougher or stronger but was a better boxer. Just because he struggled at this level doesn't mean he won't go far. Novices are supposed to improve, tough fights should make him better.

I see an early tough but successful test for a high profile new pro something to be upbeat about.

I would agree good tests are useful to a boxer early in his career.

However Sutherland was boxing an unknown with absolutely no pedigree whatsoever and got marked up in the process - I think Sutherland will be good - but the handspeed etc etc will be better suited at Light Heavy - I am certainly not writing him off - no way clearly he is going to be a talent - but I just feel he will be better suited going up a weight.

I know Sutherland looks big, but he weighed 12 stone for a six rounder so I think super-middleweight is his division right now
