Mayorga accused of rape
Former world welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga has been accused of rape by a 22-year-old woman.
The alleged incident is said to have taken place in a hotel room in Managua, Nicaragua in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
An arrest warrant for rape was issued after examinations revealed the woman had injuries inflicted by punches.
Mayorga is due to meet Felix Trinidad in a big-money showdown at Madison Square Garden on 2 October.
Several hotel employees confirmed the 30-year-old Mayorga, a regular client, had taken a room with the young girl and both had left chatting to each other at dawn.
In June an arrest warrant was issued after Mayorga wounded and threatened to kill a 22-year-old man - he was later released on bail.
Mayorga won the WBA welterweight crown in 2001 by beating Guyana's Andrew Lewis and defeated Vernon Forrest for the WBC title in 2003.
He lost his belts to Cory Spinks last December and decided to take on Trinidad after struggling to make the 147lb limit.

Given this I find it hard to believe that the allegation is going to stand up in court. It's Kobe Bryant all over again...REAL_DEAL wrote:Several hotel employees confirmed the 30-year-old Mayorga, a regular client, had taken a room with the young girl and both had left chatting to each other at dawn.
Accepted, but if both are accurate, given the lawyers Mayorga can afford in a country like Nicaragua, the witnesses seeing them acting friendly towards one another AFTER the alleged incident will be enough of a loophole.Lenny Albert wrote:yeah but what about...

Given his status and financial clout in that particular country I'd be amazed if this goes anywhere. In the absolute worst case scenario the girl and her family will be paid off.
King Speaks On Mayorga Trouble!
By G. Leon
September 02, 2004 - Former welterweight king Ricardo "El Matador" Mayorga is currently hiding from the police in Nicaragua after allegedly raping a 22 year old woman. Boxingtalk.com was able to get a hold of Mayorga manager Carl King last night. King didn't have all of the facts regarding the matter straight, but he's currently on his way to Managua as this goes to print. "I don't know what's going on yet, but I'm going over there now to find out," said King, who has the dubious task of trying to keep the hard-hitting, trash talking, loose cannon under control. Where this leaves Mayorga's eagerly anticipated October 2 showdown with Felix "Tito" Trinidad at Madison Square Garden is unknown, but Boxingtalk.com will continue to keep you updated. Oh yeah, we also hear the woman accusing him of rape is a prostitute, if in fact that's the case, her credibility should come into question considering Mayorga probably doesn't have to do much to land a woman on his native soil. Stay tuned.

Re: Mayorga accused of rape
none of which has actually been proven yet. an arrest warrant is far from meaning he actually done anything in either case. im always very suspicious when i hear of allegations of these types made against well known, high profile monied individualsREAL_DEAL wrote:Former world welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga has been accused of rape by a 22-year-old woman.

It's not looking good.

MANAGUA, Nicaragua - Former world champion Ricardo Mayorga was arrested on suspicion of rape, and says he is uncertain about the status of his Oct. 2 middleweight bout in New York against Felix Trinidad.
Mayorga was arrested at Managua's international airport after a complaint was filed Wednesday by a 20-year-old woman who said the boxer had invited her to a hotel, beat her and sexually abused her, police spokesman Marlon Montano said.
Speaking to the Associated Press at a police station where he had been taken, Mayorga said he was innocent.
"I had a normal relationship with her and the hotel employees are witnesses that she was happy when she left the hotel. I gave her two bills of 500 cordobas (about $30 each) and we said goodbye," said Mayorga, who was dressed in black, smoked a cigarette and asked a photographer to shoot him in a boxing pose.
Asked about his bout with Trinidad at Madison Square Garden, Mayorga said, "I think that it was suspended and Trinidad will fight somebody else. I'm not sure."

From Fightnews
Ricardo Mayorga has been released by police in Nicaragua and reportedly will be allowed to leave the country for the United States to go ahead with his fight against Felix Trinidad on October 2 at Madison Square Garden. After a rape charge and a much publicized manhunt, Mayorga was arrested but then released after a judge ruled Mayorga's arrest was illegal. Mayorga is expected to join promoter Don King later today in Las Vegas.
I wonder if this is the last we will hear of this? Or will he just be re-arrested when he returns home?Smit wrote:From FightnewsRicardo Mayorga has been released by police in Nicaragua and reportedly will be allowed to leave the country for the United States to go ahead with his fight against Felix Trinidad on October 2 at Madison Square Garden. Not the ideal preparation for such a big fight though.
