The real value of GBP100 would only be worth, say, GBP97 after a year, GBP94 the year after, and so on. Obviously you would earn SOME interest on that by putting it in the bank, but really not a great deal more than the rate of inflation. When you start getting large amounts of money, you have to make it work for you, but investing in things that are going to pay a rate of return, or things that aren't going to lose value in the long run, like gold (about as close to risk free you can get, but in the long term, doesn't really grwo in value too much.)

That's why people like to buy things, like houses, that over the long run provide utility (you can live in them) and shouldn't fall in value.

I remember Meldrick Taylor had a mansion with a swimming pool shaped as a boxing glove (or was it Saad Muhammad?). Either way, their salad days are long gone. Saad even sold his Canastota Hall of Fame ring on ebay.
