Bad news

Post by Old bones Ian »

By Rick Reeno

Don King dropped a bombshell tonight as he announced that Lamon Brewster would be fighting Evander Holyfield next.

Don King: Evander Holyfield is the next opponent for Lamon Brewster, we are going to give Holyfield another chance.

Bad news indeed, Holyfield is shot and an accident waiting to happen the guy need to retire for the sake of his health and the sport. Everyone involved with the promation of this fight should be ashamed of themselves.

I have a horrible feeling thet this could be a rerun of Ali V Berbick.

I just hope Holyfield doesn't get hurt or humiliated.

The 1994 Holyfield would have beaten Brewster, whom is a capable but average 'World' Title holder but this is now 2004.

Don't worry they will be back in fashion for the Madchester revival of 2008.

Holyfield maybe a shot as Ali was in the 1980's, but Brewster is no Berbick.

I give the old guy a chance in this one, Brewster is poor. Most people from what I have read said Meehan won the fight (pretty comfortably aswell). This is Meehan we are talking about, not some big shakes.

Not only do I think Danny Williams can beat Brewster, but I would pitch Skelton and Sprott in with him now also. Harrison would probably need one more fight.

Brewster didn't look the part of a champion against Meehan, and he didn't really look that great against Wlad when he won the belt (Wlad was battering him before he ran out of gas). Brewster had flashes against Meehan where he came on strong and thew nice powerful combinations, but they were few and far between and he often looked winded after doing so. Also, although Holy looked terrible against Toney, it's not been THAT long ago that he looked solid against Rahman and his draw against Ruiz should've been a win by most accounts. I think Holyfield wins the fight, but hopefully he doesn't go up against any of the bigger guys afterwards.

Nobody wants to see Holyfield still fighting but if he is going to try and win another title this is by far the easiest out there. I hope he wins but retires afterwards but theres little chance of that..

do you honestly think if holyfield was to win another title that he'd actually retire? and more to the point do you think that Don King and the rest of the leaches would encourge him to retire if he won?

Nah they will let Holyfield continue, encouraging him to take more blows to the head, to make his all too evident punchy demeanour get even worse. then when its all over and they have their brain damaged dollars in their grubby little paws they will all cry in unison how 'Holyfield was a true warrior, a modern day great who will rate as one of the best ever and how it truly breaks their hearts to see him in the state he's in'

its when you sit down and actually think of guys like King and the rest of them (including those who will pay to watch the fights), who are happy to sit back and count the dollars whilst encouraging guys like Holyfield and Mesi to go get more damaged than they already are, that you realise that boxing can be a fucked up sport rotten to the core, where some of the games most powerful individuals and governing bodies really dont give a flying fornicate about nothing except the money in their pocket, happy to play their part in causing even more brain damage to guys who should be allowed nowhere near a ring, in the name of 'sport'

fights like this make me fornicating sick. i truly hate boxing sometimes

If Holyfield has a mind to fight, an no medical reason for him not fighting stands in his way who are we to knock him?

And lets remember this isn't a guy a easily manipulated or desperate for the money.

I agree I'd rather he didn't fight but to be fair why shouldn't he? Fighters like Greg Page earning chump change and ending up severly disabled in the ring are the real tragedies not fighters like Evander who fights because he WANTS to not because he has to  .

i was gonna say Neil, but David already did, no one is forcing Holyfiled, a lot of the blame if he does end up fucked up, lies with the fighter himself.

He is the one taking the chance, he doesnt need the money, he doesnt need the kudos, in fact he doesnt need any of it.

To my mind Holyfield is fornicating himself the rest are just giving him the opportunity to do so.

I mean owhats a million quid when youve got 300 mill in the bank?

Sure aint about money, its holyfield's own misguided thoughts that he can be the W champ again, yeah possibly against the likes of Brewster but at what cost Evander?

Sorry but blame lies squarely on Evander's shoulders for anything that occurs forthwith in my view.

I didnt say he would retire Neil, i said 'hopefully' he will, i agree if he wins a title he will just carry on, and it probably will end in tragedy. I think he could win against Brewster then i would be hoping he would retire though i think its unlikely

no ones forcing Holyfield to fight in about the same way as no one actually forces drink down an alcoholics neck.

you both state similar things. he doesnt need the money, true i agree 100%, whats a couple of million when youve already got 300 million. again i agree. so he's not doing it for the money. He ,must surely know that even if he wins a version of the title, he wont be condidered by many as the legit champ. so whys he doing it?

he's not easily manipulated? well im not too sure about that. while most folks think he should go theres always the leach giving it the 'you can do it champ', mnipulating his beleif that all is fine, that his speech isnt slurred, and that he can find the glory all over again.

he needs to fight. maybe not financially, maybe not for the kudos, but in the same way as a drunkard needs a bevvy, or that some fighters need the wage, but holyfield needs boxing.

there may not be any 'medical' reason, but then we're dealing with boxing here where depending on what state your in then any medical concerns can fly straight out the window, tysons depression, mesi's current problems, wayne mculloughs brains scans etc etc the list is almost endless.

If you genuienlly look at Holyfield now and compare him to 10-15 years ago David are you honestly saying that theres absolutely no difference? if you are, then your blind. if you see a difference do you think that that difference doesnt really exist because there isnt a medical certificate?

Holyfield is a danger to himself, he knows the risks but no one has the balls out there to stop him because at the end of that day they can all make money from him. A bit like the guy who sells the wino a drink.

Personally I enjoy watching a guy receive even more brain damage than he already has about as much as i enjoy watching a wino drink himself into a coma.

The Greg Page analogy escapes me. Page was injured in a bout, a one off accident if you want. unfortunately in a sport such as boxing these things can happen and can be extremely difficult to predict. Holyfield on the other hand is becoming victim to a degenerative condition, which can be spotted a mile off. and yet everyones thinking it aleight to make it worse, as long as he is happy to. but surely the tragedy which befell Grag Page should make us all the more wary about letting a guy fight on when he's obviously damaged. £300 million or £3, at the end of the day it means nothing if you cant wipe your own arse in the morning.

The boxing world unites in its grief, and at times its collective responsibiltiy about what happened to Ali, but for the most part is quite happy to sit back and let it happen all over again.

While you make totally valid points there Neil, you still dont explain how or what is supposed to happen to stop holyfield fighting again?

Exactly nothing can be done.

the responsiblty lies with the individual involved the same way as it does for an alcoholic to stop drinking. I fhe doesnt want to stop he isnt going to.

Rightly or wrongly.

Could more be done now thats a question worthy of debate.

But at what point do you infringe civil rights assuming th fighter in question meets all the medical require, ents to enable him to box.

I agree withy our principles but the issue here is not whether its right or wrong, undoubtedly its wrong, but who you are blaming for me it lies squarely with Holyfield in my opinion.

The only man that can put a stop to his career as long as he is fit enough to box within the afore said medical guidlines is Evander himself.

So question is how much pity do you give to a man who is damaging himself constantly by fighting on? Prabably about the same amount I have for George Best.

you can fill in the blanks.

My sentiments exactly neil. Isn't it the case that this is one of the reasons it's necessary to have an independent board of control, to safeguard the boxer who lets face it always seem to want to fight on far to long. Managers and promoters are parasites by nature so decisions about shot boxers continuing in the game cannot possibly be left to them and it seems to me that boards are not doing their job at all.

Just to add to this strand, I saw a boxer in training a while bad who was completely shot; a danger to himself in fact. He had managed to get his license back, God only knows how, and was training for an up and coming fight. I can honestly say it was one of the saddest things for me to witness and he definetly was not compos mentis; it was obvious to everyone there except the boxer of course. How the hell could he have got his license renewed?

a more simplistic answer to this could be a simple fact. guys who promote or attach themselves to obviously weakened fighters do so for one reason and one reason only, money.

the money is revenued from one source, the punter. advance paymets, site fees, purses and ppv all rely on people watching the fight for thier pound of brain cells.

if people stopped going to see fighters such as holyfield there would ultimately be no fight. unfortunately many of these 'boxing fans' have no such conscience whether they attend the fight in person, buy it on ppv or watch it on whatever other source.

hiding behind the 'medical' excuse is rubbish. we all know stories of guys who should never be allowed near a ring again but somehow some medical board has passed them fit.

my job entails working with mentally ill pindividuals. now im sure we are all aware of the term 'being sectioned', the ins and outs of this arent really important here, but what is important is that whatever mental health act is applied you can be detained or stopped from a certain activity if you are deemed a danger to yourself or other people, or if your behaviour puts yourself or other people at risk of harm or injury.

now there is no way im possibly suggesting detaining shot fighters!!, but surely it would not be beyond boxing commissions, if they genuinelly cared about a fighters welfare to inroduce a ruling that regardless of 'medical' opinion, if a boxer is clearly putting himself at more risk than is generally acceptable in a fight then he should be stopped for his own benefit. likewise any manager, promoter or individual culpable fopr putting a boxer in this type of situation could have their license revoked.

The Ali act in America was supposed to include provisions to protect boxers interests. Now after 'discussions' with certain individuals in the states, this piece of legislation was subsequently water down to ridiculous proportions. a huge opportunity missed.

the whole issues is one which will probably never really be solved i admit but there are certain steps which could be taken to reduce this sickening aspect of the game
