Gumshields
Sorry if this has been asked before.
I read the answer to this many years ago and I've forgotten it, but when and where was the gumshield introduced? There was a story that old timers used sliced orange wedges to give some protection at one time.

I read that Ted "Kid" Lewis was the first to wear one, and Jack Britton's corner objected to it before there first fight which was on 26th March

this will give you a clue
ound this great article printed in 1909 about leach Cross( Dr wallach) the boxer come dentist cracks me up
Leach Cross Blames it on the Climate
New York July 7 1909
Leach Cross who was knocked out in 41 rounds by Dick Hyland at Colma has arrived and declares a change in his fighting tactics. Hereafter he says he will engage in no long battles, but will confine his efforts to 10 round bouts in the city.
Cross says that the Californian climate had a good deal to do with his defeat. Hyland is expected here in a few days and one of the local clubs will offer him a 10 round bout with Cross. Such a fight would excite more than the local interest as the supporters of the local man believe he can win on points in such a limited contest.
Dr William Wallach sometimes clept Leach Cross has made a new discovery that is liable to set the scientific world by the ears.
Recently “Doc” had a little debate over scientific matters with a low brow named Richard Hyland. The pair discussed maters of intellectual interest and distinguished scholars like Cockney O’Brien, Mit and a half Kid, Two by Four Colby, Fagan the Maiden and other noted observers were in attendance.
During the heat of the debate the doctor succumbed and several distinguished professors, including his brother Sam Wallach, Johnny loftus and other wise men of the east carried the learned doctor to a convenient rest where restoratives were applied.
Some uncouth person remarked that professor Hyland had struck professor Wallach in the mush with a rock, but the distinguished scientists who attended the doctor pooh-poohed the idea. They contended that professor Hyland would not be guilty of such a rude thing.
For several days professor Wallach was dozen and unable to concentrate his faculties but when the noted savant reached New York he discovered the cause of his discomfiture
When the learned doctor took a slant at his mush in the family mirror he discovered that he had those beautiful eyes of that limped black hue and badly swollen lips. This caused alarm in the Cross family and distinguished alchemists were called in. But before the learned guests had arrived Dr.Wallach had made the discovery. He found on investigation that he had a bunch of Californian climate in his system. Some of the Californian climate was congregated under his eyes while he had a deal of Californian Climate on his lips and more of it under his chin, while the climate germ also lingered in his immediate Kiskus.
The Doctor extracted specimens of the climate and when he put it under the microscope he discovered that it was a quarrelsome climate with an awful punch.
Cross immediately made known his wonderful discovery to the scientific world and post haste sent his views on the subject in a neat little brochure to Richard K. Fox’s literary Digest. Dr. Cross’s discovery will be of great interest to mankind at large. In future if a footpad holds you up at an inconvenient hour in the morning just hand him a bunch of Californian climate. It is much better than a lethal weapon .
It can also be applied to collectors with deadly effect. If your collector is too hasty about the rent pull out a bottle of the climate and wave it across his mush. That will make him forget it.
Immediately following Dr.Wallach’s discovery there was a great demand for Californian climate and his product will be one of the staples of commerce in future.
According to Dr. Cross his discovery will settle household quarrels, take spots of trousers and grow hair on a door knob.
Cross’s discovery is the greatest boon to science and suffering humanity since John L. Sullivan great discovery that a well timed wallop on the chin would cause instant sleep and the learned New York Dentist will be a candidate for the Nobel prize this year.

In 1913, Lewis was the first boxer to use a protective mouthpiece. It was designed for him by his dentist, Jack Marks, himself a former fighter. The mouthpiece soon became—and continues to be—standard equipment in the sport of boxing.

Also Lewis had horribly jagged teeth witch lead to him getting cut all the time witch lead to him being the first to wear a mouthpiece. Has anyone ever seen that old film of Lewis knocking out heavyweight John Gummer?or Joe Gummer or somethin like that. It was awesome. Lewis is one of my favorite welters ever.

lewis
i agree with you that he was one of the great fighters of that era. i posted a short article about him some months back and it was quite a pleasent surprise that other people were so interested in him.
I have some newspaper articles on him which you may find of some interest - all from the US - one is about the dentist bit.
as it happens when my dad was boxing in US/Canada - 1924-26- he used a gum shield and had to remove it. This pissed him off and he went out and flattened the guy.
the date when it was accepted I am not sure about?
if you would like copies of the articles please let me know and I will email them to you.
I wonder whether or not they used them when sparing and made use of headgear protection.
