your favorite alexis arguello fight??????
Let's leave out politics and concentrate on boxing. What is your favorite fight with Alexis Arguello and why?
Doesn't matter if he won or lost.
Me personally, Ruben Olivares sticks out for me. Here was a man who just was a great fighter............period.

Olivares or Escalera II. Those two were all time classics IMO.

His battle with Leonel Hernandez or his first fight with Escalera, they were both classics.

The battle with Andy Ganigan is worth a look if you haven't seen it.

For sheer action, it has to be his first battle with Pryor.
Amongst his victories, most enthralling would either be the bout with either Olivares or Mancini.

So many great fights, the first Pryor fight is just too insane to pass over.
But i just finished watching Boza Edwards, Chacon & Ramirez. All excellent fights. Standing in front of Alexis was bad news. Concussive power in both hands and completely perfect punching technique. If he would have had better feet he would have been illegal.

Someone on here, some time ago, anointed him a, "mini-Joe Louis." I thought the description quite apt.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:So many great fights, the first Pryor fight is just too insane to pass over.

The left hook that he used to finish Escalera off in the 13th round of the rematch was just mindblowing. Escalera, who was really bullying Alexis in that fight, fell in pieces, ala Fuller after the Robinson left hook.

His late career knockout of Billy Costello was pretty safisfying. Costello was abit younger and fresher and actually got under Arguello's skin complaining about his handwraps/gloves prior to the fight which was on CBS. Costello was alright for 3+ rounds when BANG, Alexis caved him in. I think there were 2 knockdowns and Costello didn't have a clue what happened. Arguello was still slightly pissed in the post fight interview that someone would question an old pro like himself. of course he vented his displeasure in that typical gentlemanly, honorable Arguello way.

In the ball park, Louis was faster, he reminds me of Tito on steroids.

If I remember correctly, he hit Olivares with a similar punch at the end of their fight.bennie wrote:The left hook that he used to finish Escalera off in the 13th round of the rematch was just mindblowing. I watched so many Arguello fights that it's hard to pick one. Loved Olivares and both Escalera fights, his lightweight title fight with Jim Watt was interesting because he was taking on a guy determined not to get knocked out. The Mancini fight was amazing because he broke down a guy who had an amazing will and kept taking brutal punches and coming back for more.
It is amazing that during one stretch between early 1979 and late 1980, Arguello defeated Escalera, Bazooka Limon, Bobby Chacon, Rolando Navarrete, Boza-Edwards and Jose Luis Ramirez, all former or future champions. And in between he KO'd a 46-0 Ruben Castillo

Mancini is my favourite one to watch but there's a choice of 7 ot 8giacomino wrote:If I remember correctly, he hit Olivares with a similar punch at the end of their fight.bennie wrote:The left hook that he used to finish Escalera off in the 13th round of the rematch was just mindblowing. Arguello's left hook, mentioned a few times already, was very under-rated, the right hand got a lot of press but the left did a lot of damage at key moments of nearly all his big wins (Olivares, both Escalera fights, Chacon, Mancini, the KD of Jim Watt, etc etc etc)
as also mentioned, his technique punching was perfection itself.

I Cannot pick a favourite because his career is littered with great performances & brilliant victories! We should remember Arguello was behind on all judges scorecards before securing victory over Chacon!

It gotta be these 3 fights:
Arguello vs Olivares
Arguello vs Escalera I
Arguello vs Pryor I
The great Alexis Arguello was always entertaining in his fights. "The Explosive Thin Man" will always be remembered as one of the greatest champions that ever lived.
