Fast hands
The trainer at the gym says my main problem is my hands are too slow.
But how the fkk do you get quicker hands at 35 years of age?
No redtube suggestions thanks.

Hi, these are just some suggestions as I have never boxed except very briefly at school, 2 or 3 lessons.DavidPayne wrote:The trainer at the gym says my main problem is my hands are too slow.

Unfortunately reflexes and speed decline as you age, as I can attest myself but I think you can do a few things to get better speed if you havent tried these before. Not sure if your trainer has suggested these to you?
When you punch are you tensed up especially in the shoulder/neck region? This would slow down a punch so to develop more speed try to stay relaxed and keep breathing. You should practice/shadow box punching faster with open hands (barely clenched fists) with emphasis on loose , easy and quick motion (no strength).
Practice single whipping punches standing still, legs shoulder width apart, pelvis thrust forward so that top half of your body seems to be resting on your legs and pelvic bone ensuring that your upper body is relaxed as all the strain is on legs and pelvis.
Try to customise a training program that has exercises to work on explosive power, like squats for instance. Running, where you jog walk and run full pelt for short distances alternatively, this builds explosive power. You can use street lamps if you do any road work to determine change.
Another thing that you can do is punch yourself out on a heavy bag or through shadow boxing so that your arms are just gone and feel like dead wights, i.e you cant punch anymore.. Take a short break where your arms hang by your sides and breathe in and out deeply , bend down your head towards your knees with arms hung out loosley so that blood flows in your arms and you get white/red splotches in your hand.. start punching for speed now. I have trained this way in the mists of time and although hard to get used to at first , it feels as though your arms have no weight/resistance. Apparently this helps build better speed.
Check out some wing chun videos/information although mechanics of a wing chun punch are different from a boxing punch but I heard a rumor long time back that Chris Eubank studied some wing Chun to work on his speed/calmness (cant confirm if it is true).
Check out below links:

Hope it helps and good luck.
Re: Fast hands
it sounds silly david... but practice drumming, and up the beat of the song as your confidence and rhythm in creases..
then, to take this into boxing... play on the pads with your fists taking the place of the drums, with someone holding the pads closer to you, and throw half shots only, not full arcs of the arms.. along with the music....gently increasing the beat.
firstly use your renee and renata colection, slowly building up to new order !!

Re: Fast hands
Now we're getting somewhere. I think.
Re: Fast hands
Lock yourself in a room ,tape the key to your bollocks , get a bag full off bee's , shake them up and release . Now try and kill has many has you can knowing full well , if you drop your pants to get the key they'll sting you on the balls.
If that don't work , stand in front off the bag , throw a straight left , left hook, straight right. just a basic 3 punch combination.
Throw that comb and repeat has fast has you can , has many times has you can in 10 sec, 20 sec off, do know more than 3 rnds .
Reason for no more than 3 rnds , is simple , once your arms get too heavy it stops becoming speed work and becomes , heavy work.
If you follow these instructions correctly , once you find out it works , let me know and i'll tell you where too post the cheque.
OH and by the way when you get so fast you cannot count the punches , just count the left hook and times it by three.

Re: Fast hands
Focus on technique and speed on the bag, forget about power and hopefully with regular training the speed with come.......like anything it takes time.
Re: Fast hands
Cut off one finger from each hand.
Less weight = more speed.

Re: Fast hands
Good ways to improve speed for single punches is shadowboxing with really light weights 1min with weight 1 min without. One tip i can always remember about throwing faster combinations is focussing on the next punch as soon as first one hits (sounds obvious i know but works)

Re: Fast hands
I know this sounds funny but try punching really slowly using minimal effort and using "perfect form" and relaxation
after a thousand reps try speeding up gradually but keeping the same feeling !

Re: Fast hands
Massage the Tendons to the Elbow 3" out pushing into the Elbow. Spend time on the Triceps 2 mins each Tendon, as you get older they tighten. Theres some great work you can do with a Fitball for the problem
Re: Fast hands
Use wrist weights when you shadow box. At 35 your not going to be too quick anyway, are you considering competing? I think the age limits 37 for Amateur Boxing so i imagine your just training to get fit. If thats the case, then just focus on your fitness, stamina and technique instead of speed.

Re: Fast hands
tie a tennis ball to your head. the ball has to be hanging by a string from your head. you punch the ball before it hits you in the face - repeatedly. i'm not sure how long the string is. how long is a piece of string?
Re: Fast hands
Your probably right Chambers.

Nope, not planning to compete, in white collar or whatever.rob h wrote:Use wrist weights when you shadow box. At 35 your not going to be too quick anyway, are you considering competing? I just want to get better, more competent and be able to participate in spars with the fellas who are competent in the gym. I've done some sparring but I throw away my natural height, reach advantages because I'm ponderous with my hands (feet too), I'm told I hit hard enough, though I don't sense that, its just I'm slow.
If I could get some speed on my jab, I think I could hold my own with a few of the fellas who have been going longer than I have but it wont come easy.
Main reason for going, is just to do it, the benefits of fitness etc are great, but I want to learn to box. That's the driver. I've been writing on and off about the sport since 2001, seemed sensible to learn 1% of the reality of climbing in too.
Oh and with two daughters who will hit their late teens when I hit my fifties means I'd like some tools to deal with young reprobates knocking on the door:-)
Re: Fast hands
don't throw proper shots. throw 'em from the elbow and land with the inside of your gloves. then you have it: fast fashy fvcking hands. a big name pro whom i need not mentio did this.

As for RedTube suggestion........go lose youself for hours mate. Emerge parched and guilty.

Re: Fast hands
one thing about punching with weights, do it in moderation. if you do it too much, you will lose coordination and your body could get used to throwing "sloppy", "heavy" shots.

Re: Fast hands
Technique, technique and more technique
Other than that just practice, practice and practise more. Shadow box and as you do so master each punch, but focus on perfecting the jab and the straight. Practise in front of the mirror and look at the way you throw the punches, make sure you adjust your punches so they are more compact, the more compact your punches. The punch should be thrown by the body but controlled by the fist, each punch should twist, ie your palm starts by facing you and the hand turns throughout the punch. As the punch is thrown the elbow should lift slightly upwards.
The more punches you throw fast the better you will get at punching fast. You should be throwing singles, doubles and trebles with seconds of rest in between each combo, each should be done in front of the mirror perfecting technique and maximising speed. Do this for 1-2miniute drills followed by enough rest and do as many drills as you can. The more you do the more you'll improve
Also when you punch think about recoiling when the punch is in mid motion. When the first punch is just about making full extension start to throw the second punch, and so forth with subsequent punches
Never punch with weights it won't develop speed and will teach bad form
Balance is very very important to properly let your body explode and recoil, make sure your stance, footwork and balance is practised. Squats (without weights) can help you develop better balance, so a squat workout will help

Re: Fast hands
I done a squat workout, once! That was more enough I couldn't walk properly for days, I had to shuffle about the place because I couldn't straighten my legs.DavidPayne wrote:Cheers.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Technique, technique and more technique
