I would do a warm up with lightweights (never a fan of weights) prior to sparring and felt sharper with it. It is important to watch punch form with this... leg weights on your arms is the best way... very light weights.

loads of shadow boxing also, and I would recommend one of those protec weighted heavy bags (not those hanging from the ceiling, but the ones filled with sand with a base.

but really it is practice and its shadow boxing and heavy bag work again. Speed bags are as much about co-ordination than phyisical speed.

Well i just turned 38 and think i'm faster now than i was 10 years ago. i hurt my left hand about a year ago so concentrated a lot on shadow boxing for a good couple of months until it healed and then when i went back to the heavy bag was shocked how much better my combinations and speed were. Normally once a week do a 15 round non stop session on the heavy bag and try and average 120 punches a minute but every 10 mins i will see how many times i get hit the bag in a minute. My record about 2 weeks back was 240 in a minute and that was after 30 mins non stop. I think the secert is not to try and beat the hell out of the bag but work on timing and punch variation mix up speedy punches with power punches.
i hope this is some help and as a man who is 120 kilos and 6"2 i think i prove that not all big guys are slow.

Just try to get as light as possible while retaining strength and maximize your conditioning. There really aren't any exercises that will gain you a noticeable gain in handspeed . . it's genetics.

relaxation is the key. cant stress that enough, all the best fighters in the world r relaxed. look at mayweather doing his padwork, hes learning how to relax and rely on technique.

try and "whip" ur punches out, i find speed is as much about pulling the punch back as it is throwing it (if that makes sense).

never a fan of shadow boxing with weights cos the resistance is in the pulldown and not in the direction of the punch. resistance bands attached to a wall r preferable.

1 thing that REALLY helped me was learning the Wing Chun straight blast, cant use it in the ring but really helped to get the hands moving. Youtube it. it was a revelation for me.

I'd often bouce a ball off of a wall and catch it with the same hand cos it makes you react quicker without thinking, teaches you to "stay out of your own head".

Yeah, I agree especially as someone aged 33 could then fight till he is 50+ (if you mean the pro's).

an obvious tip is to keep ur hands moving slightly, if they r already in motion then u will react quicker. basically its easier to go from 30 to 60 than it is 0 to 60, make sense? If u look at a tennis player about to return a serve, they dont stand rigid just waiting do they? So it should be with ur hands (but still with a tight guard).

As others have said, use (light)weights occasionally while shadowboxing, and also try shadowing boxing while in a pool(either resistance or normal).

Bennie, thanks for the cold reality I'd feared.

Spud, yours is the best yet, though I'd probably be drawn to use power:-)

Lots of advice, thanks fellas.
