The British Boxing Board of Control have handed lightweight John Murray a £1500 fine for failing to make the weight for his British title defence against Scott Lawton.

24-year-old Murray failed to make the 9st9lbs weight limit for the June 13 clash in Wigan by just 1.8oz, but that mistake has cost him dear.

Levenshulme fighter Murray was stripped of his title as a result of the weigh-in, although the fight did go ahead and he was a comprehensive winner after six rounds.

The victory made his error at making the weight a bitter pill to swallow, but he has now been hit in the pocket too.

Murray has to pay a £1500 fine and £250 costs after a BBBC hearing held on Wednesday, while trainer Joe Gallagher and manager Mike Marsden were also handed identical fines.

Murray's camp had pleaded their innocence, saying it was an honest mistake and not intended to gain an advantage, but after the verdict they announced they would not appeal.

Murray, who is said to be 'gutted' by the decision, has no plans to fight for the British title again, as he hopes for a world title shot as the number 14 lightweight in the world.

£1750 not too bad judging by what he has probably earnt as British Champ. Good he has made these errors at this stage of his career rather than further up the ladder. I hope his next fight is Thaxton and after that the European belt!

Billy Graham talking Murray up, gives predictions on Murray versus Thaxton and Khan. No reason not to make the Thaxton fight now, even if it ends up a non-title affair.

Good honest interview. I like the way he picked Khan despite obviously being John Murray fan.

Good thats its only a fine should be more disiplined he shouldnt be coming in that late for weigh ins and overweight

Best bit was post-int, apparently his picking of Khan caused a huge argument between him and a mutual friend who was with him at the time, who picks Murray. Think they've patched it up now.

Billy has got his predictions wrong before!!!

John Murray wins a fight with Khan if he can get through the first 3 rounds relatively unscathed - Khans impressive handspeed is a clear advantage but if someone puts him on the back foot I seriously think he is flawed big time.
