Cesar Brion (1925-2009)

Post by Martin Sosa Cameron »

The great Argentinian heavyweight Cesar Brion passed away at 84 years old in Argentina.

He was many years between the best heavyweights of the world in the '40 and '50. He fought Ezzard Charles and Joe Louis (twice), lossing on points, also Roland LaStarza and Rex Layne. Brion scored very important triumphs over Bernie Reynolds, revenge, KO in eight), Johnny Melko (KO in 3), Tami Mauriello (TKO in 2), Charley Norkus (TKO 4), Vernon Mitchell, Jack Gardner, Abel Cestac, Wes Bascom, Joe Kahut, Bill Wilson, Dan Bucceroni, and others.

His pro career was from 1945 to 1955. His high world ratings position was number 3, in the gold old times of only eight weights and one World Champion

As I recall, Cesar Brion was a stablemate of Rocky Marciano and use to spar with him on a regular basis. I hope that Brion's family, friends and fans accept my condolences.

below post is from the incomparable
"Phil from Brooklyn"
reprinted from his email response 2 moi

thanks for obit. info.I met cesar, circa 1980.I was given an address for him.it was on the west side of manhattan,80's or 90's.the person who gave it to me wasn't sure if it was correct.I ventured forth to the apartment.brion opened the door.he signed 3 pics for me.he had lived in nyc for many years.that same day he was returning to the argentine to reside.lucky break for me.
when charlie norkus died, bill gallo had an article recapping charlie's career.among the numerous errors,he said norkus had ko'd brion.if gallo had any recall,he would have known that brion was only stopped once in his career,by johnny holman, when he was nearing the end of his career.brion stopped charlie in their first fight, charlie took the duke in number two.
book out,"gentleman bruiser",bio of peter jackson.I believe the author is bob petersen.it was published in australia, circa 2005[364 pages].the schomberg center has a copy
best regards,philip

So sorry for the loss of such a great fighter. My grandfather Johnny Melko boxed against him. Since my pop passed, I have been trying to find more information on his boxing history. If anyone can help me out, please respond. Thank you, and again sorry for your loss.

They showed his fight with Louis on ESPN Classic a couple months ago; didn't realize there was a thread on his passing.
Belated RIP.
