well id actually forgotten about this until i noticed a thread on the boxers of the past forum about Rahman Ali.

anyways his name is Danny McAlinden. He was born in N.Ireland but came over here at an extremely young age. He lived and grew up at 21 Wardlaw Place, just off Gorgie Road, opposite Tynecastle.

Due to his birthplace and the fact he eventually moved to Coventry, he billed himself as the "Coventry Irishman".

By all accounts he wasnt the most stylish heavyweight, but beat apparently conclusivly beat Rahman on points over 6 rounds (although I have a source that says it was 8 ). Apparently his style changed little from when he used to wrestle his pet Alsation "Dante", as a boy.

He aslo won the British and Commonwealth Heavyweight title ko-ing Jack Bodell in two rounds in 1972, holding the belts for 3 years before losing it to Bunny Sterling in 1975.

He than wen on to win the Northern Irish Heavyweight title in 1977 in 2 rounds.

Apparently ringside for his fight against Rahman were Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross and Robert Redford.

Not too bad for a Gorgie Boy really.

Im sure he's still involved in boxing in some capacity in Coventry
