White collar "right or wrong"

Post by ratman »

Just wondered how people felt about non boxers fighting in charity events etc.
Im 34 , love boxing and think i know a little of the art .
I have several friends who have turned out to be very good amatuer and professional boxers, with ABA titles , Commonwealth belts etc who i have admired very much!
The thing is i have always been as soft as shite but always wondered what it would be like to actually step into the ring !
Last friday i actually plucked up the courage to step into the ring with a very close friend of mine in front of about 400 people at a charity event . It was very well organised with 10 fights on "all non boxers" with medical staff available etc.
I was mentally ok right to the point where i stepped in the ring and all my energy just drained ! I was pretty scared to say the least about fighting in front of all these people!
The fight started and i was as weak as piss , it was only 2 2 min rounds but felt like a lifetime .
I got myself a little bit of a pasting but would not change the fight for anything!
I finally found out how hard this sport actually is and i admire without question the boxers who i thought were "shit" before!
There is no "shit" boxer in my eyes now , cos just climbing through them ropes deserves all the admiration in the world.
So i just wondered people thought these events were ok or should we leave it to the professionals
I can see both sides now!!!

Fella, I wouldn't take KG's comments too seriously, as he certainly doesn't! Sure I speak for most on this forum when I say congrats to you as it takes real courage to step between those ropes - regardless of the outcome you won the hardest battle just by doing that and no-one can take that away from you so you should be proud of yourself :TU:

Personaly i think its a great thing , it s good for anyone to do it purely from the physical excercise point off view.

Reagarding you little foray into the ring well alls i can say is congratulations , next time will be a little easier.

The funny thing is , i've said before on this site over the years from 10 till retirement i had over 300 fights but its guys like you that i respect ,
Because there was a fear there, that you could feel in the belly, and it took guts to get up and do it ,you had to overcome your fear.
Myself on the other hand i never ever felt any fear because i loved, it i only felt adrenaline and a excitment i cannot describe at the thought of fighting, so too me it came easy and natural

Now i will get brave when one day i can overcome my fear and take a parachute, and jump out off a plane or learn to dive . These are things that i've always wanted to do but can't overcome my fear. You my freind are the brave one you overcome your fear . WELL DONE

Great story mate, respect. I have trained and sparred with some really class fighters and only through injury i'm not a pro so I say well done to you mate. boxing as the saying goes is truly the toughest sport in the world and takes real guts to get in the ring even to spar.

Alot of the thai/kickboxing shows I referee and have fighters on are now putting on white collar bouts and when done right ie headgaurds,16 ounce gloves, evenly matched, money raised for charities etc are a great experience for the people involved,The problem now is that a lot of promoters are using the name as a way of putting on unlicensed bouts (I know white collar is unlicensed also but when done properly can be a lot safer) with 10 ounce gloves no headgaurds, bad matchmaking and untrained fighters and thats where the dangers are.

Firstly want to applaud the first poster - takes b*llocks to stand and fight in the ring in front of your mates - if you get battered there are some who would rip f*ck out of you in the pub later - so respect to you having the balls to get in there.

I am helping out some lads who are fighting on an EBF show in the Autumn - prior to that helped out on a show at the end of May - it was bloody brilliant to see the lads in a hard but fair fight and for their first words to be even when one or 2 of them lost - "enjoyed that" - and for their mates & girlfriends etc etc creating a fantastic atmosphere it was good to be part of things and I fully intend doing EBF" or "White Collar" a lot more often.

600 - 700 people attended the show in May - and I also went to a show in Middlesbrough a few weeks back where the same number attended - well organised shows - cracking atmosphere - some good fights - value for money for the punters and even more the inexperienced boxers who fought on the show and a couple who even lost coming back into the gym wanting to do it again gives you a boost to keep going!!!

So to answer the thread question - on the strict condition the medical side of things are covered correctly - I will say "Right".

I recently took part in a charity show in the US in front of a sell-out crowd at the Legendary Blue Horizon. Not only did the crowd and the boxers have an amazing night, but we also managed to raise $55K for the boys and girls clubs of philadelphia. 16oz gloves and 3 x 1.5 minute rounds meant that nobody got hurt (except for my opponent when I decked him with an overhand right in the second round :D )

I actually had a couple of legitimate amateur fights back in the UK over 10 years ago, but obviously had never stepped into the ring in front of 1,300 people before. What an experience! Unbelievable. It gave someone like myself who loves the sport of the boxing, the chance to experience what it must be like for a pro fighter. Helped me understand why fighters find it so difficult to walk away from the sport, since the adrenaline rush and the cheers of the crowd are extremely addictive. As for the Blue Horizon, I can't imagine a better boxing venue in the world.

Is white collar boxing a lot more expensive?

I always seemed to get the idea it was as its often portrayed as being highy flying city boys and bank managers etc.

in london they can milk ya but in my gym its £3 per session to train when the lads fight they get £100 to cover expenses plus £5 per ticket there a lad fighting on my show who has sold 100 tickets so is coming out with £600 for doing 3x2 minutes wearing 16oz gloves i used to sell 80-100 tickets do 6x2s as a pro and only come out with £800 so its not too bad
That sounds a right good deal :TU:

Wheres your gym lol

Might have a look into any in this area.

If its done right (proper medics, no ex pro's fighting postmen who've only had 2 training sessions etc) and as long as its not passed off as pro boxing I think it can be a good thing definitely, gives lads who may not have ever had the chance to get in the ring a chance to experiance that, something to aim for, letting out your frustrations, keeping fit, rather than going up town and having a bar fight or something.

I promote shows in north notts and of course i think its good but you have to make sure youve got paramedics etc , if a fighter was to get heard would anyone really want it on their concience , just try to make sure your matching people right etc too , and as for fighters age i had a 51 year old fight on my last show , it was his first fight and he was stopped in the 2nd round but he really enjoyed it and was proud that hed done it , he now has 2 other fights coming up on other shows , one of which is ebf .

Went to one in Doncaster and Hull a couple of weeks ago. It was the prize fighter format and the winner went home with £3500. There were paramedics and a doctor, the boxers had 14 ounce gloves, head guards and also they were all the same weight, except Doncaster which was heavy weight. 500 + people were there and the boxers had there big entrance. It was well matched and a brilliant run evening. They have 2 coming up in Hull and Barnsley in Sept and Oct and i will defo be going.
