The Beeb stink!
The Beeb stink!
Why show an undercard fight first?
Just watched the Greenberg fight, not too impressed to be honest, he seems to have good mobility, quick hands and a nice relaxed style. However the way he brings his jab back so low will get him into trouble at a higher level and I am yet to be convinced of his punching power and conditioning.
But he is still very young for a Heavyweight and so has time on his side.
Nice to see you back Bennie.

not impressed much by this performance
Good handspeed, slightly arrogant, keeps his hands too low. Noticed in Round 3 he "did a takaloo" ( copyright Slapsie 2004) and rushed in only to take one on the chops. A harder puncher and it would have been goodnight Vienna.
Looked in soft condition, so that may be why he could not step it up.
Don't see him as a long term prospect. Those low hands will always do for you in the end. Bad habits, learnt early etc. Sam as happened to Haye

I don't see Greenberg going anywhere!.... the first decent fighter he faces will clock him. When will these guys learn that only very few fighters can get away with the hands down Ali like approach!!!. Haye has been found out and I think Frotch will be next though probably not against Hague. Froch has a better chin than Haye but is so wide open and gets hit by so many silly shots thats its just a matter of time before he comes a cropper unless he modifies his style.

I think all the terrestial channels have alot more to lose than Sky and thats why there is less mismatches.
Sky generate an audience of hardcore fans but ONLY hardcore fans, the viewing figures for a great fight (not on PPV) would go up a little, but not significantly. Lay fans would tune in to watch Hatton vs Harris, but they wouldn't fork out 40 a month to watch it.
All the terrestial channels have a lot to compete for and a lot of pressure to deliver - the viewing figures would significantly increase if there a fight that attracts the media attention.
However, lets not go to soft on the BBC cause they are closing their boxing coverage. In the three years since their return, we have suffered loads of mismatches, does the words Audley Harrison mean anything.
Perhaps my memory is fading, but I find it hard to remember a poor headline fight on ITV. I tell you this (cue my Rab C Nesbitt accent) if the big deal in 1995 wouldn't have been signed, Hatton would have fought Harris by now.
We saw how Adam Smith shit himself when Warren ranted at him, but where was the pressure from Sky to force the fight to happen. If Ricky would have admited in the days of ITV that he needs the big fight, he would have had it - cause ITV would have pressured more, because they needed more also.
Sky would probably get 50,000 people extra tuning in to watch Hatton vs Harris tops (as opposed to Hatton vs Stewart), its not financially worth it for Sky to get Harris - leaving Warren 1)Financially struggling 2)Under no pressure to perform.

Has anyone else noticed how a number of fighters and trainers etc seem to be getting pissed off with SKY pundits? I noticed Gary Lockett after he stopped Monaghan and the stoppage was questioned by Ed Robinson he said "What is wrong with you people?!" and on Saturday Brian Hughes said Tony Doherty's performance was to show Glenn McCrory who slagged him off the week before and Barry Hearn said McCrory should get a proper job a few months ago!
Are the fighters/trainers right to be pissed off with the pundits? Or are the pundits finally questioning the mismatches and none events that there "house fighters" are participating in each week?

i thought the greenburg fight was one of the most boring ive seen in years. very slow, mostly single punches with the odd combination. cant say i was over impressed. he needs to step up in class, perhaps he's betting lazy or bored.Slapsie Maxie wrote:not impressed much by this performance

i watched the fight afterwards on fast forward. even then it seemed very slow!
You make some good points Stu, I can't recall any poor ITV headline fights either, I'm sure there must have been some but not with the frequency that SKY have shown over the last 5 or so years. Was Nelson Vs Deleon on ITV? I think is was.stujones wrote:Perhaps my memory is fading, but I find it hard to remember a poor headline fight on ITV. Whilst on this point I still miss the Gutteridge - Watt combination, they were part of my 'Boxing education' as growing up.

Yeah, it's a shame we dont get to see more rounds cut out of big fights.REAL_DEAL wrote:Sky have been screwing the fans for years. they should demand that the promoters make fights like hatton - witter. etc but the promoters walk all over them.
BBC show us lots of competitve matches. shame bbc doesnt get more air time.
It's a shame we don't get to hear more of Jim Neilys attrocious commentary (worst commentater of all times)... and Duke McKensie
It's a shame we don't get to see more fights shown the next day at 1am (joke). I already know whats happened by that time, as do most others.
It really a shame that we don't get to see more close ups of John inverdales face.
It's a shame. BBC are a F***** joke. get the **** out of boxing please.
Sky box office are putting cotto fight on the bill a week later this is probably due to they are afraid of poor sales.
BBC have shown Woods v Johnson 1,2 Haye - Thompson, Froch ETC all the big fights in this country and for titles like the British title, IBF titles, European. Not on sky thou who will show so called World title fights. Sky had to nick two BBC european champs who won the titles on the BBC.
In any other sport if you win the world championship you are consindered the best in the world not on our tv screens.
Hell even junior witter gets better tv viewers than Calzaghe, Hatton and Scott Harrison.

Nelson vs DeLeon was on ITV and was a poor fight, but it was still a big geniune fight on paper. There were only two people to blame for that fight turning out bad, that is the fighters themselves.KOJOE90 wrote:You make some good points Stu, I can't recall any poor ITV headline fights either, I'm sure there must have been some but not with the frequency that SKY have shown over the last 5 or so years. McCullough vs Bredhal was also a boring fight, however Bredhal was world class back then and now has a world title - it was a good match on paper, but the styles clashed.
It of course happens all the time, Gainer vs Marquez, Calzaghe vs Starie, Akinwande vs Lewis. These are all good matches, but failed to live to expectation - Nelson vs Deleon falls in this bracket.
