USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
The Great Britain dual in October 2009 is a little different than the usual dual. The Great Britain team will be in the U.S. for three weeks. There will be three days of competition spread out over three weekends. The first competition date is scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2009 in Norfolk, VA. The second competition date is Saturday, October 24, 2009 in St. Louis, MO. The third is set for Saturday, October 31, 2009 in Des Moines, IA.
The first competition will be for the USA #2's.
The second one will be for the USA #1's.
The third one will be for the USA #3's.
So the GB team will compete against 3 different USA teams. I'm assuming that it will be one GB team comprised of their #1's, but I don't know if that is true.

I'll see what I can find out from my UK buddies and will post any information.I'm assuming that it will be one GB team comprised of their #1's, but I don't know if that is true.
Just heard from one. He feels the competition will be used as a tune up for the Worlds, so it should be tough - most likely their #1's/World team. I'll post names if I get them before the US publishes.
Re: USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
Mel - it can't be a tune-up for the World's since the World's take place the first two weeks of September and this dual is the last three weekends of October.
Re: USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
True - my English buddy wasn't paying attention to dates, either.
Re: USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
Mel - did your English buddy talk about their problems since Beijing? BABA taking over for ABAE and the Great Britain team's head coach Terry Edwards getting fired.
Re: USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
I just read that BABA is having the inaugural "Atlantic Cup" between GB and USA. The ad talks about 6 bouts between the best of GB against the best of the U.S. The date is Friday, November 13, 2009 in London.
I'm not sure about this one since this wasn't mentioned for the #1's. Maybe the USA's #2's, #3's, or #4's are going.

Re: USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
It appears the Atlantic Cup may not happen since there was never an official confirmation by USAB. GB just talked about it with one person and then decided to do it. Never mind that USAB really doesn't have the money to send a team anywhere unless it is part of the elite program funded by the USOC.
Re: USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
At what point do we find out the boxers being used?
Re: USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
The USA teams have been juggled so it is no longer the #2's, #1's and then the #3's at the final event. Each event will have a mix of boxers from the top 4 spots (the Elite team members) representing the USA. For the 1st day of competition on October 16th in Norfolk, Virginia, USA Boxing has selected its squad. It has also announced the team that will represent Great Britian. See http://usaboxing.org/news/article/16241 for more details.

Re: USA vs Great Britain - October 2009
2009 USA Boxing National Championships light heavyweight bronze medalist Steve Geffrard (Boca Raton, Fla.) was selected to compete in the event, but as Great Britain was unable to field a boxer in his weight division; he will not be boxing in the dual. Great Britain is replacing the spot with a second flyweight. The United States will announce the second flyweight competing in the event shortly.
The coaches leading the U.S. team into action are Barry Hunter (Fort Washington, Md.), Gloria Peek (Norfolk, Va.) and Willie Taylor (Arlington, Va.) with Robert Matney (Virginia Beach, Va.) serving as the Team Manager for the event. Rich Neves (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Randy Richard (Opelousas, La.) will work as the AIBA officials with Dr. Tony Al-Amin (Elkton, Md.) and Fran Webb (Manvel, Texas) joining the delegation as the physician and computer technician respectively.
