Can any nationality challenge for the EBU(European title)

Post by Hounddawg »

Given the fact that Russians hold Paba belts, Africans hold australian titles, and australians hold African titles, can an Australian challenge for a european title?

If they can why haven't any Australian challenged for the Title it would be the ultimate bargaining chip for a world title.

I'm interested to find out if it's possible.

It's only a matter of time EBU titles will be contested in Fiji, as are Asia Pacific in Germany

The EBU title is the only major regional title which adheres to its specified geographical boundaries. Therefore only Europeans can fight for EBU belts. If people from other countries could, I'm sure this would have been exploited long ago!

Rocky Mattioli fought and won the EBU light middleweight title back in 1975 and he was an Aussie.

Ayub Kaule and Sumbu Kalambay were the first two Africans to fight each other for the European title and the fight was staged in Denmark

Don't know about Mattioli, but Kalule and Kalambay were Euro citizens at the time they contendedfor EBU belts.

Mattioli was born in Italy.

Who did he fight for an EBU title?

Mattioli was born in Italy and grew up in Australia. He moved back to Italy because Stadiums Limited wanted him to let his fights go on longer. They said he was KOing people too early. We have had some odd people running boxing in this country.

You've moved around a bit 8)

We were practically neighbours then. Wouldn't be surprised if our families knew each other. Or we're related :o From '63 when I was born to '69 my family lived in a place called Vodnjan (10kms from Pula) before calling Melbourne home

p.s. I think the old Robroy in Fitzroy which we discussed a while ago, used to be full of drunkard Croats, yelling and fighting as we often do
