Colin: We have Shade W-10 Joe Anderson @ Los Angeles, April 15, 1930. I have a day-after newspaper account that says it was a draw. ric
Hi Ric
My source is the Ring Record Book, 1971 version (I think - I only have a photocopy of Shade's record and didn't note which edition it came from).
However I do have a photocopy of Joe Anderson's record from the 1941 RRB. This shows them as fighting twice in 1930 for a D10, and a W10 for Shade - unfortunately the dates and locations are not given. The draw is given first and the W10 to Shade after Anderson beat Wesley Ketchell (W8).
Ric, obviously go with the contemporary report. As you go further through the year you may come across the draw. However the 1971 RRB photocopy of Shade's record does not list this fight.

Me again. I confused things a bit. The 1971 RRB gies the 15 April 1930 bout as a W10 for Shade and the 5 August bout also as a W10 for Shade.
The 1941 RRB for Anderson does not give dates or locations for 1930 but the first bout listed between the two is given as a D 10 and the second as a W10 for Shade. This would be consistent with your contemporary report of the 15 April bout.
Hope this is clearer.

Well, Colin, since the time I made my original post, I found a second article from the same newspaper saying it was a draw. The first article - Fights Last Night - listed a dozen fights from the previous night. The second article said:
"LOS ANGELES, April 16 -- (UP)--
Joe Anderson, Kentucky middleweight, flashed into a surprising comeback during the closing rounds of his bout with Dave Shade here last night and won a draw just when it appeared that Shade would take the decision."
I'll make the change, add the comment, and also note the inconsistencies between the RRBs. Thanks, ric 8)

Shade vs. Hector
Here's another one: BoxRec has Shade NC-7 Mike Hector @ Los Angeles June 26, 1930:

I have a day-after newspaper recording a Shade NC-9 Hector @ Los Angeles May 6, 1930.
Any suggestions?

I checked the RRB to ensure I entered it correctly - as they had it - and I did. When I am in the library next Thursday I will check the New York Times for all these 1930 bouts. It would seem the RRB has got it badly wrong. They did likewise for Lou Ambers.
Until then I think we should note that the bout in question is listed in the 1971 RRB but has not been verified with a contemporary report and may just be an incorrect entry of the bout you verified.

Were you also able to clarify his bout(s) with Hector?
