Matthew Ellis in the United...
Matthew Ellis in the United...
..States!

Got a draw against a somewhat modest opponent.
Seems funny now that he was a much touted prospect at one point.

Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
I thought that was an odd one, too. Why would any US promoter take him over there and put him on the left side of the bill? It's not as if he's a prospect or a contender anymore (as the result shows). Hardly worth the airfare, is he? Unless he was there for other reasons anyway, and just asked around for a bit of work.

I saw the press release, was convinced it was a coincidental name.

Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
It wasn't.
Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
There WAS another "Ellis" on the bill, too. Who knows- could have been out there anyway, just picking up a bit of work, yeah.
Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
oh well at least he can tell his kids hes amde his american debut
Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
He was over there to collect his billion dollars.
Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
id already seen the result on boxrec, i do a round up and scan through them weekly, noticed matthew was on the left hand side of the bill......how bizarre..
anyone got an explanation?..

Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
Does the left hand side really make a great difference? I know it nominally means the "home" fighter, but equally it could just be the way it was added to the database.
My guess is that they were looking for an opponent for the guy that Ellis drew with (possibly it was his last match)-
This guy's record isn't great, something like won 5 but lost 20, so perhaps they hand-picked Ellis as an opponent with a decent record on paper, and an "international opponent", but who based on current forum might be knock-outable. I dunno, just speculating.

Title holders are always on the left hand side. I know it doesn't apply in this instance.whicker wrote:Does the left hand side really make a great difference? I know it nominally means the "home" fighter, but equally it could just be the way it was added to the database.

Well on fightnews they have Ellis taking on huge heavyweight Lance “Mount” Whitaker in August.
I have a feeling that might be an early night for Lance

Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
Why is Ellis bothering to fight anymore? These 1 rd knockout losses are embarrassing.
Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
He might, of course, simply need the money.overhand_right wrote:Why is Ellis bothering to fight anymore? These 1 rd knockout losses are embarrassing.

I think he's fighting Mount Whittaker next - he's as big as Tyson Fury too and more seasoned.

Was the 'billion dollar heavyweight' thing attibuted to both Ellis and Roman Greenburg? Was it Frank Maloney who came up with that for both of them, or was it two different people?

Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
Even when Ellis was a prospect and winning he was actually losing. Harry Senior decked him 3 times as i recall & got jobbed of the 8 rd decision, and the same thing happened again with Michael Murray.
I can't believe anyone ever thoguht Ellis was any good - these days he doesn't even hit back, he's just a punchbag. Whether Mount Whitaker can end it within 60 seconds is the only interesting question this match throws up.

Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
always strange how a moderately looking bloke could generate a 16 st chiselled physique !!
then....he drops down to cruiser, enjoys limited success
then.... goes back to heavyweight, and is a flabby 16st....
why the difference ???? .....

Ellis fought in the States again last night. Lost to Lance Whitaker by first round knockout.

Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
He should retire now he seems as if he doesnt try anymore against Fury he went out and down with the 1st meaningful punch
Re: Matthew Ellis in the United...
I`m surprised Whitakers people even employed Ellis. I got nothing but respect for the games journeymen but Ellis is giving these guys a bad name. He is offering nothing at all except his name on a guys record. Does he even train for these outings? he should pack it in. He risks long term damage what he is now doing - both physically and proffesionally :(
