Colin: Bud Ridley-Macario Villon

Post by Ric »

Colin: Unless I jotted down the notes incorrectly, my Seattle newspaper source says that Ridley won their 20-round bout Jan. 8, 1922, although both eyes were almost completely shut by the 8th, and he was dropped for a long count in the 18th. By these facts, it doesn't sound like he was winning. I'll double-check this when I next visit the library. (I believe the source of the newspaper's article was a letter from Ridley's manager to the sports department, so, go figure.) 8)

Problems Ric. My source was the 1941 Ring Record Book. I have re-checked my notes and they do say it was a W 20 for Villon. I can't readily check this unfortunatlly as I didn't photocopy it as the New York Public Library's copy was in such poor shape that they didn't allow photocopying of it. Fortunately I got a few done before they withdrew it for photocopying purposes. I have another source which I will tyr and get a copy from. This will take time. In the meantime I suggest we go with your newspaper report. The RRB gives the date as 7 Jan 1922 so it may be that your 8 Jan is the same as for the Gordon / Nationalista bout.

inquiry on Macario Villon. I have a bout that shows Macario Villon beat Bud Taylor, in Manila, 1921 (20 rounds). The first name was spelled Marcario (with an R). I saw a mention of it, only once, in an article about Phillippine (sp) boxers. Can anyone confirm? The article said around 1921. Also noted Taylor's early fights are missing locations and exact dates. Was he fighting in Manila?

I'll be researching 1921 papers someday soon. Right now, I'm only up to mid-1919. (I forgot to bring my notebook the other day, so, while I was at the local University Library, I reearched early 1922 bouts.)
Colin, I double-checked the Feb. 17, 1922 SEATTLE DAILY TIMES. It definitely said that Ridley won. I'll make the change.

Always take the contemporary source.

$Bill I changed Macario Villon to Marcario Villon because we had fights under both names. Why pick the Marcario ? Because the not so infallible bible (Ring Record Book) had it that way under HIS entry and I thought they would be more likely to get it correct than a newspaper, although all sources seemed to have trouble with the Filipino names. I have found, for example, Dencio Cabanella as Denico Cabanella and Cabanella Dencio and Cabalena Dencio. An 1924 Ausralasian Record Book list him as Dencio (Gaudencio Cabanella). The Australian newspapers at the time of his fights here just referred to him as Dencio. He may seem an insignificant fighter but if you read the biography I entered for him you will see he was exceptional.
