Guys, hope it's incorrect, but I just heard a nasty rumor that Vernon Forrest was killed in a car-jacking. Man, I remember Forrest for pulling off a tremendous coup in fighting the perfect fight to beat Shane Mosley. And then...he did it again. Would always make you think that no matter how good you are someone's got your number. What I will always remember Forrest for however, is for being a really nice guy. A couple of years back when the WBHF was being held at the Commerce Casino, at the end of the memorabilia show as things were clearing out i decided to get a photo of Vernon Forrest with my Pops. Vernon, Lupe Pintor and a couple of others were behind roped stancheons and I approached them. Well, theres this j***off whom they threw a green blazer on who thought he was secret service says, "Show's over, you can't go in!" Obviously he thought Vernon was a world leader and that this was the U.N. rather than the WBHF. Regardless, as I'm getting annoyed, saying, "Hey, I just want to get a shot of him with my Dad!", Vernon overhears, gets up, tells the green blazer that it's OK and pulls my Dad to him over the stancheons and I get a great shot. A cool head prevailed. I spoke to Vernon several times later that day in the lobby and just thought he was a really good kid. Again, I hope this is an unfounded rumor.

Vernon Forrest R.I.P.

(WSB Radio) Former boxing champion and U.S. Olympian Vernon Forrest was shot and killed in an attempted car jacking in Northwest Atlanta, a police spokesperson said.

Lt. Keith Meadows with the Atlanta police department told WSB Radio, Forrest was putting air in the tires of his Jaguar around 11 p.m. Saturday at a gas station on White Hall St. at McDaniel Blvd. Investigators said at least two men jumped out of a red Chevrolet Monte Carlo and tried to steal Forrest's car. The boxer had a gun and started running after the suspects.

"The victim and suspect became involved in a brief foot chase," Lt. Meadows said. "At some point, gunfire was exchanged between the two of them. The victim was shot at least once in the head."

Investigators said they are talking to several witness.

"At this point we have a general description of at least two black males driving a red Monte Carlo." Lt. Meadows said.

Police don't think the suspects knew Forrest was a professional boxer. His girlfriend's young son was in the car at the time of the shooting. Family members are flying in from Texas to pick up the child, Lt. Meadows said.

Forrest, who lived in Atlanta, was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team in Barcelona, Spain. He was a three-time champion with two WBC welterweight wins against Sugar Shane Mosley in 2002. Forrest, nicknamed the viper, beat Sergio Mora for the WBC junior middleweight title in September.

The Augusta, Ga. native was stripped of his WBC belt in May because of a rib injury. He was supposed to fight Sergio Martinez on August 1st.

Unbelievable. This has been an exceptionally tough year for boxing. Forrest was a good fighter and a worthy champ. He had Sugar Shane Mosley's number. My condolences to his family and friends.

Just read the story on Yahoo. Sounds like Vernon was one of the good guys. In Boxing. In the human race. His promoter says that maybe Vernon's tragic death will serve as an example for others to curtail senseless violence.

It's strange that the odds of this planet to have the proper mixture of chemicals to promote life can be be such an ugly venue at times. One of these days if we do not curtail senseless violence,we will all be curtailed. R.I.P Vernon.

My cousin Cris is half-Italian. Her dad, my uncle, Vince Glaviano had a great Italian Restaurant in the Central Coast town of Atascadero.
My uncle Vince would make everything from scratch. As a kid, I remember how he'd lay out the pasta on a table, cut it to noodles.
Today Uncle Vince is gone, but my cousin Cris just happens to be in town. DD
She's as good an Italian chef as her dad, and she loves to cook, and wants to meet my wife anyway, so . . . I gotta make a call.

Just talked to my cousin, I'm picking her up, we're going to the store, and then to my place where she'll cook.
I'll pick up some of my favorite Italian beer, Peroni, and some Dago Red, and I'm a happy man.

Thanks Rog, you may have posted for Randy, but you hooked me big time. Italian is my favorite food of all.
My cousin just happens to be in town and I normally wouldn't invite somebody over to cook, but you have to know her, she's a real dago and I love her.
She wants to meet my wife, we'll have wine, and a lot of fun.

Food Shooters . . .

I have to give you guys credit, you really do a nice job of photographing your food.
In the early 80's, I worked for a commercial producer who did a lot of work with food products.
We did lots of table-top shots of the product, and employed a variety of tricks to make the food more appealing.
All shoots had what was known as a "food stylist", and they make the food look right.
We use other photographic methods to make a bottle of beer "sweat", those frosty drips. It's interesting how products are filmed.

Cameraman Freddie Moore was the top "food shooter" of the eighties. I worked for his lighting gaffer, who was an early mentor.
I learned a lot about lighting food, simple technique, camera angles, etc.
I know how to photograph food, but I can't cook it. You guys do both well.
