The forum is about expressing opinions and letting off steam - life would be all dull if we all lived in the same "peace and harmony" world you live in!!

Re: promoters
I have to agree with "Lenny" on the Lockett and Jennings matches. "Spud" is way off the mark putting them in the same bracket as the Walker fight. Walker has been thrown in on several occasions and I really feel for the guy.
Both Lockett and Jennings received top three world rankings through very good domestic records and earned their world Title shots. In both cases, they were up against very, very good champions and travelled to them for the chance. They were beaten and that happens but they earned their shot and there is no shame in a loss to either Lockett or Cotto.

Re: promoters
Agreed, they earned their chance and got very well paid for it. As Hatton found out, sometimes, with all the will in the world, you just aren't good enough against the real class guys. I think both are man enough to accept that. It's all about taking chances and Walker never stood a chance from the off.martin_g91 wrote:I have to agree with "Lenny" on the Lockett and Jennings matches. Re: promoters
Davis was a partner in the firm so was slightly different. Ask all the remaining top players about Hearn. He's hated in snooker circles. Eubank states in his book that Hearn owes him money. Benn got shafted by Hearn too which he why he went back to Warren at Old Trafford.McCannW14 wrote:I doubt Steve Davis would agree with you there!boxingchat wrote:As for fooking people - Ask Billy Graham why he's taking Hatton to Court? Yes Ricky Hatton the messiah like figure who can do no wrong!
What have Dennis Hobson, allegedly, Billy Graham, Art Pellullo, Top Rank and Frank Maloney got in common? Answers on a postcard! rumour has it Golden Boy are new members to the line up too.
Cuckoo knows FA about what he is talking about.
Ask Eubank and Benn and just about every snooker player about Barry Hearn. Hearns fooked more people than Jordan.
The biggest draw in Snooker of all time, Alex Higgins, begged, yes begged, Hearn to manage and promote him. Hearn turned him down every time.
Ive got no idea about Hatton, though I think Warren did a great job with him. But I am surprised at what you say abouy Hearn.

As for 'Fooking fighters' - dangerous statement without any knowledge. Why is it the promoter who gets accused of this and never the fighter?
Funny how fighters alway's leave Promoters once they are Multi-Millionaires and never when they still need investment.
Funny how fwank lets fighters go if they lose two on the trot - unless of course he makes lots pf money out of them!
Names?

BIGMARK wrote:I dont see why people see Frank w.arren as a bad promoter. He gets his fighters title fights when others may be more deserving. He manages his champions well getting them at times easier defences and when needed delivers the big fights. Yes his big fighters have left him but its only as they think they dont need a promoter anymore and want to earn more. The work Frank has done with Khan over the last 10 months is top draw and for me he may be a bad loser when fighters leave him but he is very good at his job. Lets not forget the stuff he did for Michael Watson when he was fighting the BBB of C. Hate him for playing the game but he is very sharp in my book and the UK's top promoter by some distance.
Excellent point, based on facts not opinion.

Martin - I have highlighted the part of your post which particularly is completely inaccurate!!
To use the words several had me scurrying to David Walkers record to confirm some of the thoughts I already knew about the lad. Davey has never been in a boring fight - and no matter who the opposition was he always seemed to make things a little more difficult for himself - but with that said he brought guaranteed excitement to everyone watching his fights.
But its this word "several" which particularly took my interest - David Walker has only been defeated 4 times in his career - Jimmy Vincent, Roman Karmazin, Jamie Moore and his last fight which clearly showed his all action style had taken its toll and he needed to give up the sport.
You then go onto "world rankings" to try to justify your argument which again is complete and utter b*llocks because dependant on the governing body is dependant on who they favour with regards promoters and their fighters - in addition there are some top level fighters not even in the top 10 of some governing bodies and thus to try to justify your argument on this is barking mad.
For example - to get a champion a voluntary defence - you know a "nice" defence you have to pick your opponent well - to attempt to stop complete mismatches the relevant governing body sometimes states a fighter has to be in the top 10 or 15 for the fight to happen. In Walkers case for instance as many people pointed out at the top - Walker was suddenly given the appropriate ranking by the EBU to be able to fight Karmazin.
We then move onto the 2 examples I gave that in my opinion were always going to be mismatches and I do not think there were many people on this forum who gave them a chance.
Lockett v Pavilk
Jennings v Cotto
First of all in the 5 years prior to Lockett fighting Pavilk please could you inform in which fight or fights against world rated opposition did Lockett earn his ranking:
2007-12-15 Kai Kauramaki
2007-04-07 Lee Blundell
2006-11-18 Ayitey Powers
2006-07-08 Ryan Rhodes
2006-03-11 Gilbert Eastman
2005-11-26 Victor Kpadenue
2005-09-10 Allan Gray
2004-09-03 Michael Monaghan
2004-02-21 Kreshnik Qato
2003-06-28 Michael Monaghan
2003-05-08 Yuri Tsarenko
Or is it simply a fact that Team Pavilk were looking for an easy defence prior to what they hoped was going to be a fight with Joe Calzaghe? - or was it simply Lockett had held the "much coveted" WBU Middleweight title? but whatever way you look at this there was some major lobbying done with the relevant governing bodies to ensure Lockett got what some still perceived as an undeserved shot.
I now move onto Michael Jennings and I will use the same sort of trail of thought to see if and how we can fathom out why Michael Jennings deserved his shot against one of the very best pound for pound fighters in the world - so please could you tell me which one of the following fighters Michael Jennings proved beyond reasonable doubt he deserved a shot at a World championship belt:
2008-11-14 Jason Rushton
2008-04-05 George Ungiadze
2008-02-02 Ross Minter
2007-09-28 Vladimir Khodokovski
2007-04-07 Mehrdud Takaloo
2006-09-02 Rastislav Kovac
2006-01-28 Young Mutley
2005-10-25 Bradley Pryce
2005-07-16 Jimmy Vincent
2005-06-03 Gavin Down
2004-10-01 Chris Saunders
2004-05-22 Rafal Jackiewicz
2004-04-01 Brett James
2003-12-13 Peter Dunn
So please go on tell me other than having a promoter who is clearly a very good one and knows how to work the system - how on earth did Jennings and Lockett deserve their shots at world titles - and Walker did not deserve his shot a european title?
And I repeat before you attempt to prove me wrong - please remember the positions Promoters manoeuvre their fighters in to get them the shots in the first place - and thus my conclusion is sometimes its the promoter who gains the shot not the fighter earning it in the ring!!!
Thank you - next please!!!

Re: promoters
Spud,
Your point does have some validity. But they were number 1 contenders so the governing body obviously thought they did. History is littered with people at #1 who were far short of the reigning champion at the time their chance came along. In much the same way history is littered with big upsets too, where the underdog has pulled it off. Did you pick Spinks to beats Ali in 78?
Sorry Spud let me enlighten you. the great Ali was beaten by a relative novice in Leon Spinks. Do apologise, but Boxing did exist before 2000 when you first kissed Frank Maloneys arse and convinced yourself that Julius Francis was going to knock out Tyson.
As for Promoters, don't you think Warren might have put one of his own Heavyweights in if he thought they had a chance of winning? Instead, he spent one of someone elses and waited a bit longer before Danny Williams took the glory!
In comparison, looking at their respective records and opponents, did Hatton deserve to be number one for Tzsyu, did Harry Simon deserve a crack at Winky Wright any more than Lockett or Jennings did their chances? Suddenly when the result comes off everyone predicted it!
Lifes about chances and calculated risks. When the reward
is big enough and the chance is presented, then you evaluate that chance and weigh up the risk.
David Walker was thrown in - pure and simple - by an egotisical Promoter who was trying to make his mark in the game. Walker was an exciting ticket seller, but at the time a Southern-Area level novice. His previous 'see-saw' fight against the limited Spencer Fearon was hardly a blue print on how to fight a well-schooled, teak tough and ultimately dangerous Russian like Karmazin for a European title, was it?
I think Hennessy would agree with the benefit of hindsight.
Anyway Spud, why does anyone have to answer to you. You know naff all about the sport and have never bought (not sold, remember Sheffield!) a ticket in your life.
You are just an irritant who does nothing but spread stupid and unproductive rumours on here when the fact is all you are in this business is someone who is just used and abused by people looking for a cheap gofor.
Why don't you go and become a barnicle on another sports bum?

Boxing chat - I have been warned not to get into a "spat" with you and thus I will respect their wishes and not trade insults with you!!! - well just a couple to keep myself entertained.
I do find your posts very entertaining unfortunately for the wrong reasons.
What is the reason for such a long delay in your posts?? - do you have to get the office to crowd around the computer to string a couple of sentences together - or if the post is slightly controversial do you have to go crying to "the boss" or bleat to the "in house" you are being bullied!!! so he can send a couple of letters out.
Talking of promoters - have you ever pleaded for your job when you thought you were being sacked - there are rumours about you boxingchat - I was very upset for you when I heard one that you were in fact sacked by one promoter due to your dealings and your blatant incompetence and attitude towards the job.
I have been warned again by the mods "boxingchat" so I will leave my post there.

The FACT is Francis not Williams got his chance when he did by whooping Williams in the previous April and then successfully defending the titles against Scott Welsh!!

This is a golden opportunity!!
BoxingChat (25-0, 19 ko's) WBO ranked number 1 - had a string of easyish fights and has gained his ranking by virtue of who he knows not how good he is - allegedly
v
Spud (23-1-1, 12 ko's) 'The John Murray/Carl Froch' Boxing Organisation - aka 'I have worked down bloody pit for years, paid ma dues, now I want to fight once a year and get paid peanuts' boxing organisation - was put in with Oscar De La Hoya in his second fight in a typical piece of Hennessy matchmaking.
Weight: Catchweight (aye catch pies more like)
Venue: BoxingChat's backyard (obviously!)
We just need a promoter - come on guys anyone wanting to take this one on? Hayemaker? No thought not Soud may be too active for you guys!
Ref: Dave Parris or Mickey Vann
Purse: 150 meat pies to the winner!
Lets get in on!!!
These threads are quality - reason I joined this forum!!
