Just came across this piece on the internet, it makes for some interesting reading.
After the recent tragic deaths of 2 prelim boxers, i though that it was unusual for that to happen, as i'd always thought usually deaths or serious injury occur in the later rounds of a 12 or 10 rounder.
But going by these figures alot of deaths happen around the 4-6 round mark as well.

And when you look at the figures for each year since the 1970's then they have stayed pretty constant, even with all the new safety rules being brought in.

Its obvious boxing is a dangerous sport so when someone commits themselves to a fight they hold responsibillity for themselves. We all know that hard trainning, sparring, exercising the neck and defensive trainning are a boxers essentials but its the med-book thats equally important. Boxers (and most are) must be responsible for not only passing any medical/fitness tests and taking careful consideration to any advice doctors give. Even if the doc says 'your fine to fight but...' as soon as they hear 'but' the boxer should seriously consider the doctors worries and tell their trainer immediately.
However this wont promise an immunity to a serious injury or fatality in the ring, but is the best possible routine to ensure your strong and healthy enough to take on considerable blows. Its either that or you could just do one-punch KO's in the first round throughout your boxing career lol.

What do you mean by "prelim?" Who has died recently (excuse me asking this, as I havn't been on the forum recently.)

Francisco Moncivais died last weekend , he was a double national championship winner in the US, taking part in his 2nd bout, a 4 rounder against Bobby O'Bannon. In the last round a big right knocked out Moncivais. Unfortunatly he never recovered and died 24hrs later.

Marco Antonio Nazareth was the 2nd boxer, he fought Omar Chavez. Again Marco was stopped in the 4th round, he collapsed and was operated on, he lost his life 4 days later.
