Can someone fill me in on Martin Gillick?

Post by oliverfennell »

I've seen the recenmt fight result and resultant thread, but his "prime" (i.e. before his debut) was before my time here. Can anyone fill me in with the full story or preferably post some links of his trash talk?

I first witnessed it over on ESB. He was saying how he was an amateur champion and had trained for years at the barn. He then went on to request managers, trainers, promoters numbers etc... to get a fight sorted. Im sure he didnt turn up for a couple, each time there were various reasons, family, illness, didnt get on with the trainer etc... Im sure, I could be worng, that somone like Chris S on here had tried to get him a fight but he was overweight then wouldnt be turning up etc.. alarm bells were ringing. He finally did get his fight, on a show in manchester. He arrived overweight, had nobody to wrap his hands or even hold his spit bucket and crumbled with the first half decent punch. A certain well respected writer phoned through the result to me and said it was both embarassing and funny, all in one poxy minute. MTG then moved to NZ or OZ and has, it appears, doen the same thing there.

Search MTG on east side or on here, sure you'll find something.

One of the lads on BBN actually did an interview with him. I got a bit of stick for that because many thought he didn't deserve any space. But I couldn't resist using the headline 'Sylvester Mittee or Walter Mittee?'. Like a lot of other good stuff, the piece is now on the cyberspike.

A sort of related question...who the f*ck is Charlie Zelenoff? I completely missed this/him. I never go on current scene boards, that's the thing.

He's a kid from California who decided one day to become a boxer so he spent a couple of years making youtube videos calling out pro boxers in the US. Eventually a guy from Arkansas called Andrew Hartley(who also posts here as Kid Thunder) took him up on the offer and they "fought" last year with Hartley winning by 1st round DQ because Zelenoff kept spitting his gumshield out.

Brilliant - thanks. Always wondered that. Did he used to 'talk smack' on the forums too? MTG was a nice enough fella just obviously deluded. I seem to remember Terry D saw his debut and did a completely justified critical report on it.

Yes he posts in the Other Sports etc. section of this forum but keeps getting banned for offensive language

Here is a highlight video of him - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8sOqwMBg6Y

Thanks for the info. Seems the Gillick/Zelenoff comparisons are valid, but perhaps even a little flattering to Gillick!

After all, Zelenoff is a prime trash talker and there's no "nice enough fella but deluded" to him. Has proclaimed himself a future WBC champion, conqueror of Peter Manfredo, knocks out heavyweights in sparring (he's a welterweight) and is utterly abusive of anyone who doesn't share his self-belief (has even gone so far as to issue death threats and say sexually derogatory things about people's mothers and sisters). So, Zelenoff > Gillick here.

He's also possibly the better boxer, although credit to Gillick for trying one more time. So far Zelenoff's "attempts" at a second fight have been predictably and repeatedly stalled. But as for his first fight, he did at least finish on his feet.

Many of us (including me) have seen Zelenoff v Hartley, but for those lucky souls who have seen Gillick too, how do they compare on a skill level?

You his PR? At least Martin stuck at it. Even if he did get KO'd.

'Chuck'? Jesus. I've just wasted ten minutes of my life watching that lad Zelenoff who obviously is deranged. I have no idea who that Hartley lad is but that is THE worst fight I've ever seen - bar none.

Terry, what's happened with Vassell, as I was expecting him to make waves in the pro ranks but he's got about as much visibility as Lord Lucan?
Is it down to not being able to secure the right fights, lack of dedication, injury etc?

I think Denton is over-rated and someone who would beat Denton would be Matthew Hall, they both have the same type of style but Hall has the better all round game. Both strictly domestic sluggers.

To be fair though Olly. Gillick fought Mike jenno and a 8-2 (6) fighter, whilst Zelenhoff was fighting a, something like, 1-15 fighter.

Gillick V Zelenhoff, damn weight differences, I'd love to see*

Zelenoff is a dreamer, in the time I've known of him he has said he'd be a pro basketballer, pro boxer, pro mixed martial artist and even wanted to join the army and he has only attempted one of those as far as I can tell and failed miserably.

Charlie is like a lot of modern day kids, talks a good fight but clearly has no dedication or hardwork ethic whatsoever because that is what you need to have to not only be successful but also to survive in the above professions. You can be the most skillful boxer in the world or the most accurate shooter in the world but if you haven't got the bottle for a fight or hardwork then you are going to sink very quickly in that sort of life.

Charlie probably saw Andrew Hartleys record, noticed he'd been KO/TKO'd in all his defeats, had probably been on his back more times than Jenna Jameson and thought "I can beat this bum" and promptly called him out and made a fool out of himself.

I didn't see much by Martin Gillick on here(before my time on here) but I did see the thread he created after his defeat where he claimed to have been offered money to take a dive and how boxing was corrupt and all that.

Not even, who was the blond hair Middleweight. Chris Steele? Fought that big rough kid Darrel Grafton? He's the worst I've ever seen in the flesh.

Also if you have a look at Andrew Hartleys record you will see straight after the Zelenoff fight he lost to a guy called David Dumas who also posts here(Irish Bulldog I think his username is) who has way more balls than Charlie "The Kursk" Zelenoff.

Gillick is actually the cream of the crop of all the fighters that David Coldwell has produced.
