Really Silly Question

I understand that this might seem like a really silly question. But I would just like to know the answer. Here goes - why do heavyweight boxers have to "weigh in"? After all they do not have to make the weight.

Just for the "tale of the tape" I suppose. Also imagine the specualtion over how heavy fighters were if they didnt way in, I'd imagine an out of shape Lewis would be estimated at 20st etc...

Also helps in setting the odds on a fight, if a fighter usually weighs in at 16st then in the next fight weighs 18st and looks out of shape, the bookies will give longer odds on a victory for them

yes, i think there is a weight they have to make to compete in a heavyweight fight. I'm not sure if it's 14st 4 or not...although i can see why you've assumed so.

Thank you for this answer, and I'm not disagreeing, but I would like to know how Roy Jones Jr. was allowed to box against John Ruiz when he only weighed in at 193Lbs (13st 11), surely that would have put him in the Cruiserweight class???

In answer to the orginal question, I think the answers already given are valid (for records, betting etc) but also they are fun for the fans and are a good excuse for more publicity.

at that time the limit was still 190lbs...but i dont think the minimum limit is the same as the Cruiser max, i'd expect the minimum limit to be somewhere around 180...i dont know though.

As mentioned I suppose for betting purposes if a fighter comes in very heavy and out of shape the odds get worse.
The official weights of every pro fighter have to be recorded anyway I think....

I do now have an understanding (without the help of livra) of what is actually involved with regards to Heavyweight matches. I just could not see the reason for some ot the "heavy" heavyweights having to bother weighing in. Not unless there is some special superduperheaveyweight class, like 30St (420lbs).
