It was said that the witter fight would have been after the vince philips fight if not for the cut that hatton sustained
Rememeber there was talk of a Witter clause in his contract way before he beat Corley for the WBC belt
Infact when witter disposed of the hapless Guiseppe Lauri he was bigging himself up because he done in 2 what took Hatton 5. Hatton for his part was respectful to Witter who actually thought that performance meant something and behaved like a twat accordingly
I'm not especially mad that the fight didnt happen. Pulled out against Magee, developed hand trouble when put in againt Pinto and foughht dudes like Lucky Sambo when he should have been fighting Augustus, Tackie type of opponents and making statements against them. Worse of all when he had the chance to really stick the presure up hatton, fighting prime time on ITV against a very solid but nothing out of the ordinary opponent, two weeks before hattons comeback fight, what did he do.........

Fair does. But I sort of have to chuckle when people suggest (and I'm not saying that your one of them) that Hatton was a coward for not fighting Witter and instead went in with that Mexican road sweeper....whats his name......oh yeah, Kostya Tsyzu!lefthook82 wrote:wayofthecass

I mean Tsyzu would have put Witter through the arena floor. Interesting how people are always pointing out how Hatton supposedly ducked Witter. Forgetting conveniently like you said that Witter himself wasn't interested in taking on Magee and instead just beat up a myriad of imported dross for years and accumulated legit but ultimately empty trinkets. When he did finally step it up in advance of his world title effort and fought some live opponents ie: Lynes, N'Dou and Kotelnick he struggled and won close decisions in all before citing the hand injury chest nut. Looks like tonight the injury has crawled up his arm to the elbow.
The door swings both ways.

Whats even funnier is that I'm sure Witter said at the time that he would have beaten that Kostra Tzuyu in 5 rounds or something. Course you would have
Hatton should in all honesty have fought him but when assesing the Hitman's career I dont think the absence of Witter is going to be that much of a big deal
Philips, Magee, Tackie, Urango, Malignani, Collazo, Thaxton, Tzuyu.
How any of the above mentiooned would Witter be sure to beat/have beaten at the time?

I'd add Castillo, Lazcano and Ray Oliveira to that list. Oliveira was a real tough SOB and had never been stopped before facing Hatton. He was a real danger man and had caused a lot of upsets. I was always amazed Hatton took that fight before going in with Tsyzu. It seemed like such an unnecessary risk.lefthook82 wrote:Whats even funnier is that I'm sure Witter said at the time that he would have beaten that Kostra Tzuyu in 5 rounds or something. At 38 and dropping down a weight he would still have toasted Lucky Sambo, Giuseppe Lauri, Jurgen Haeck, Oscar Hall and the other myriad of piss poor tomato cans 'The Hitter' was bumping over for years around that time.lirva wrote:He also came out of retirement for the fight and fought at a weight he hadn't made in years (140) and was about 40 years old.WayoftheCass wrote:I'd add Castillo, Lazcano and Ray Oliveira to that list. Not seen the fight yet, but I was just looking at Witters Boxrec page and the judges scores are on there from tonights fight:-
73-79, 73-79 and 80-72
Was one of the judges watching a different fight, or is it a typo

Re: Junior Witter/Devon Alexander
I thought the fight should have been either 78-74/77-75 for Alexander.
80-72 is home cooking.

Re: Junior Witter/Devon Alexander
Witter - was a good fighter and a seemingly decent bloke.
However if we are being consistent then if Hatton gets a boatload of stick for being sparked off the best fighter on the planet then Witter should get it ten fold for QUITTING against a no mark
That is all

But to Witter ????
The other 2 had it 73-79 to Alexander but the 80-72 was for Witter - must be a typo on boxrecs part surely
Re: Junior Witter/Devon Alexander
I thought you meant 80-72 for Alexander
80-72 for Witter surely has to be a typo. Fight news.com reported Alexander being ahead on all three scorecards.

I think I only gave Junior 3 rounds maybe 4, he just was not active enough in that fight.
Adamj1987 wrote:he didnt get whipped, the rounds were competative i had bradley winning by 2 round though. im glad i got to watch the fight liveAdamj1987 wrote:Tim Bradleys the best opponent Witter ever fought & he got well whipped, I'm not convinced Witter was ever any good to begin with. What exactly are his big wins? A shopworn Corley? Scraping by Kotelnik? Ugh.
The young man should bash Witter up if he's even half decent.
i can see how people gave it like that but i dont think he was whipped in any way. he was outworked for periods. though i didnt have the best few in the world
You can just see Emerson and I at ringside in that photo. I thought Bradley whipped Junior. 2 or 3 rounds at most for Junior.
Re: Junior Witter/Devon Alexander
Witter was avoided in his prime but it's understandable given his style and the Judah fight. He really does have a way of rubbing fans the wrong way in the fights that a bigger audience have a chance to see. Let's not just write off the man's whole career - he made the best of it winning and defending the WBC belt - but I believe there is something very negative about him. That Ingle style has had some practitioners who seem to be fighting themselves and their opponents, and of course mostly they don't like working the full 3 mins nor do they like getting hit. Witter has probably stayed in boxing too long, maybe has problems doing the weight as well, and should retire. It's sad that his power and acrobatic skills didn't allow him to catch on, but there was another light welter at the time who was a fan fave (Hatton). Witter's career seems never to have got over that the Hatton fight didn't happen.
Nate Campbell also quit on the undercard, so let's not just single out Witter.
Was this on Showtime? If so, I can think of better fighters than colourless, drab light welters.

Witter was a good talker, fooled a lot of you people.
Re: Junior Witter/Devon Alexander
Thank god for that, Witter has been stinking the place out for AGES now.
Re: Junior Witter/Devon Alexander
Thats totally incorrect.WayoftheCass wrote:There was no titles at stake at that point. I don't remember anyone calling for that fight. Witter only started shouting out Hatton after he won the world title and there was serious money to be made.Neri wrote:During the latter part of thetimescale posted by lirva, the Hatton-Witter fight was big enough to take place. I went to many Hatton fights around the time including Tackie and Vilches and remember wondering "Why aren't we watching Witter in there instead?"
I think youll find that the most memorable time Witter called out Hatton was immediately after Hatton won the British Title against Jon Thaxton. This was years before Hatton even got near the world title
Re: Junior Witter/Devon Alexander
Fact of the matter is if you criticise Hatton off for taking on and losing to 2 of the all time greats and give the guy stick for weeks/months afterwards then if your fair minded then you have to equally criticise Witter for such a poor show against a moderate fighter.
To not do so and claim the moral high ground 'poor Junior never has any breaks' etc etc is plain wrong.
Junior Witter - good fighter and did well but had a chance against Judah to do something but ran and spoiled and damaged himself beyond repair from there.
Yes Hatton and he should have fought I agree.
Junior only has himself to blame for how his career has panned out and people on here need to be consistent with their views

Re: Junior Witter/Devon Alexander
who cares whose fault it was, who cares why they didn't fight. does anyone think witter and hatton would have gelled, stylistically?
despite his vaunted personality and vaunted pressure, hatton's huggy bear pressure is very ugly at world level. and witter with his southpaw mincing, switch hitting and occasional power, is one of our most frustrating fighters...the biggest loss is for witter, but for him to have "made it", he would have had to not only get hatton, but beat him, and beat him excitingly.

if witter had gone out and swung for the fences for a round and then quit then he'd be getting an easier time of it.
to just surrender the way he did is the thing.
pathetic.

I am really suprised that Witter has not got more stick for quitting in that fashion whereas Hatton got slaughtered for losing to Pacquaio

People don't care about Witter as much as they care about Hatton, so they don't get worked up about Witter.Wrists wrote:I am really suprised that Witter has not got more stick for quitting in that fashion whereas Hatton got slaughtered for losing to Pacquaio
