Lenny Zappavigna impress' Gary Shaw and is set to launch.

Post by Hounddawg »

Lenny Zappa is set to fight on the Dawson/Johnson undercard in october on showtime.

He's 20-0(14) he's currently Darchinyans main sparring partner and Gary Shaw is very impressed with Zappa' boxing abilitys.

Gary Shaw Quote;

"He has brilliant hand speed". "He also has numbing power in both hands, but most of all he has aptitude to keep on wanting to learn. My southern Hemisphere representitive and corperate partner Elias Nasser(vics Manager) introduced me through tapes of Lenny. I was impressed with what i saw, he fights like a warrior with a lot of smarts. I'm looking forward to making this kid into a world champion". "He is the complete package", has fast hands and good footwork and can bang, this coupled with the fact that he listens to those who care about him, will make him into a World Champ".

It appears with a good performance in the US, Lenny could be launched onto the world scene, and backed by one of the best in the business.

I have enjoyed watching Zappa progress through his career and can still remember the first time i saw him fight, I hope all go's well for him.

What are peoples thoughts on a potential opponent for Lenny for the Dawson/Johnson undercard?

Kendall Holt? He is a former champ with a top ten rating who was KOed and lost his title last April.

im not sure zappa is up to spomeone like holt just yet, there 2 styles would make a great fight though. i was thinking edner cherry but im not sure hed be up to that level yet either.
imo zappa is still relatively untested, hes had a few good wins in st clair and browne but i think st clair was well on the decline and doesnt belong at 140 and it really showed that night(zappa was extremely impressive though)

hes still very young and i hope hes not rushed too fast when he goes over there, because i think he can really develop into something really good(given the time and well matched opponents) but im sure he will give a good account of himself no matter who's put in front of him

The thing is he needs to be stepped up. There's no need to give him any more Phillipino imports, as that will take him backwards instead of forwards.
He needs to go to the States and fight someone ranked in the top 15. Otherwise he can stay here for a few more years and waste his prime years then step up to late like a fair few of our decent prospects have done in the last 10 years. ie Taylor and Hamden

Given the fact that Holt maybe a step 2 far for now, who else is there, that Lenny would fight.

Personally i think they might do the same thing they done with Kicket and match him with a prospect from the states.

I also think Lenny is a lightweight again, and isn't campaining at LT welter for now, his last fight he came in under the Lightweight limit, it was Olarte that was over the limit.

Yeah Holt might be a bigger step then what he is ready for,

I think fighters like

Mike Arnaoutis (this would be a great test for Zappa)
Demetrius Hopkins
Fernando Angulo (Guy that beat Gannoy)
Jesus Chavez (this could be dangerous because he has been in the game for a while now, but still winnable for zappa)
Benoit Gaudet (the guy that lost to Soto on the Ricky-Manny card)

Some good choices there soundkamp. :TU: I like the Angulo fight, and Gaudet fight.

Wow. Not afraid to step him right up :(

Chavez is retired.
Gaudet is a super feather.
Fernando Angulo fought for the vacant 135 IBF title today.
Kendall Holt - jnr welter. You can't be serious?
Demetrius Hopkins - you are serious :)

It wont be a southpaw :)

And it wont be anyone of the calibre in that list. More than likely it will be someone with a modest record who isn't a puncher. If Shaw is interested I don't think Zap will be overmatched first up.

I knew they wouldn't overmatch him, which is fair, he's still young.

Good call on Kevin Kelley, his record isn't too shabby.

i was watching Kelley V Prince Hamed the other day and thought i know he still fights, he would be a very good fight with Zappa he has a rep in the US, it would be a probally be a stoppage in the later rounds or a UD for Zappa.

But the fight would more likely to be against a propspect like Youssef Al Hamidi (http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer), Zappa could be Shaw's Victor Ortiz (prior to the Mandiana KO) :DDD

Kelley is 42 years old. He has fought six times in the last three years and lost four. If Lenny Zappa fought and beat him he would be accused of beating up on a has been.

I dont think they would let him in with Broner. His handspeed has really good. If he was outboxing Willie id say there's a fair chance he would outbox Lenny and make for a difficult fight. They need someone who is going to fight. And more than likely someone with a low KO %.

True, but he doesn't need to step over the edge just yet. Some good build up fights would be nice on the big stage. Against guys in and around the top 20. See how he goes there and then make the jump.

In that case Katsidis slated opponent, Escobedo, would be good. 21-1 with 13 KO's and rated 19 on BoxRec...

Mind you Broner is 10-0 (7) and rated 60, so I;m not sure why Broner would be too big a jump but Escobedo alright?

Tyrone Harris recently moved up 30 spots on BoxRec to #22 and is 24-5 (16), but he is a southpaw...

Hang on a minute! I've got the perfect guy... Aldo Nazareno Rios, he is rated #23, he is 46-4 (11) AND he is a 35 year old Argentinian!!!

Fight before last Harris was stopped in 5 by Urbano Antillon. Guy he beat on the weekend, Marvin Quintero, is a super feather.

Antillon's 26 win run came to an end a week ago at the hands of Miguel Acosta, rated 15 by Boxrec, who is now "interim" WBA Lightweight Champion.

How many Lightweight Champions does the WBA have at the moment?

Juan Manuel Marques is the WBA Super World Lightweight Champion, Paulus Moses is WBA World Lightweight Champion and then there is Acosta at Interim WBA Lightweight Champion.
