"Thank you for your tribute. Ramon Fuentes is my Grandfather. He was a great man who loved and was loved by many. He was the most unselfish person I have ever known. He lived a good life. He worked for Miller Brewing Company for over 25 years. He passed away on July 29. His services will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetary located in West Covina, CA. All those are welcome to attend.There will be a viewing and Rosary held in his honor from 6:30-9pm on Wednesday, August 5th. His burial services will be at 11am thursday morning."...Rhea Morales

A HOTEL NELSON SPECIAL

Ever have a Hotel Nelson Special? The weather has been hot as all get out latlely. Humid,insufferable. Day after day and night after night of heat has turned my mind to what has quenched my thirst. The old Hotel Nelson on the corner of 1st and Revolution Street in Tijuana came up with this drink called the Special. Now the Caesar Hotel invented the Caesar Salad and that's something special to be remembered in a town that's thought of as being something more decadent than a salad.But I put The Hotel Nelson Special right alongside the Caesar Salad in gourmet originality.

Here's how you put a Special together. Wet the rim of a pina colada glass with lime. Then rub the rim with margarita salt. Fill the glass to the top with ice. Now a good shot of light Bacardi. Open a Coke and pour a shot into the glass. Now a shot of 7 UP. (It's imperative to use only Coca Cola and 7 Up. No Pepsi or Sprite). Now a little Sweet And Sour Mix. Top off the glass with Club Soda. Stir and enjoy. I guarantee you'll come back.

Well one afternoon I'm sitting alone in the Hotel Nelson's Bar watching the football game swigging down Specials. The bar is small and cozy. They play it straight in there. No hookers .No jukebox. A good place to relax. I'm at the end near the TV getting into the game. Ray Nelson,the owner's son, is tending bar and making sure another Special is coming my way when my glass nears empty.

Ray was telling me he had a guy coming in to give him an estimate on refurbishing the shelves behind the bar. Soon an old guy comes in wearing a coat and tie followed by another guy in a work shirt. It's the carpenter and his "assistant."

The carpenter is talking to Ray and is going over some figures on this piece of paper. After a while I see Ray shaking his head.The carpenter walks out,but I see Ray grab the other guy. I'm thinking nothing of what's going on. The game. The Specials. Life is good.

After about an hour,I see the "assistant" walk back into the bar,but this time he's got on the coat and tie. Following him inside is this dude with a work shirt.Ray comes over and leans over to me.
"I asked if this guy could build the cabinets cheaper. He said he could give me a better deal. Now he's back with his'assistant.'"
We both gave a chuckle.

There's a story there. It'll come clear. Have a Hotel Nelson Special or two. You'll see what I mean.I guarantee you'll come back and have another one.

This "login" problem has just led to the loss of another story.
I logged in, composed a story, hit "submit" and it told me to "login" which I did once again, but the story was lost in the process.
I'm not complaining about the lost story, it happens, I'll write another.
However, if a Rob or somebody who monitors the site could comment on what might be going on, maybe it can be resolved?

THE SMOKER

If you can catch Burke Emery before can reach the dart board in his bar,you've got a chance to hear one of his stories. Last night I was planted on a bar stool and I got to stop him as he was withdrawing from the target. Curt ,the bartender,needed to have a word with him so I was within speaking range.
"Burke,"I tried."Didn't you tend bar in Montreal?"
"Sure did,"he answered.
A smile broke out and he sat down next to me. Curt,the bartender, and me was all ears .
"Yeah,"Burke said as he reached back in time. "The English and the French would have it out in there after a good night of drinking."
Me and Curt were at attention.
"Them frogs thougt they were tougher than us. I'd tell someone to put a lock on the door and then we'd move the tables and chairs against the walls and we'd have at it."
Me and Curt didn't make a move.
"Those Fenchmen and us would be toe to toe. Bare knuckles. Blood would be everywhere. Hell I didn't care. I didn't care if I lost my job. I didn't even care if my cuts opened up."
"How often did this go on?"I asked modestly.
"Just about every night"
Burke chuckled.
"When we were sober the frogs and us decided to charge money to people who wanted to see us fight every night. A buck and a half if you wanted to see that smoker."

Me and Curt looked at each other. Burke had run out of breath. The story was over.
"Well fellas," he said. "Tomorrow night I'm playing in the dart tournament.Gonna' join in?"
"Only if you move the tables against the walls,"I said.

I am having lunch with Tom, (Raylaw) tommorow in downtown Chicago.
Hes in town at a meeting.
I imagine the topic of boxing will come up.
Im looking forward to it.
