I mistakenly thought this guy fought for the world jr. middleweight title, but it turns out that, while a ranked contender, he never fought for a title. So, I suppose he doesn't qualify for "world's title trivia." But let's keep him as an extra credit.

Hint: He died within the last six months.

Ten pounds was the price in the 1960's to migrate from the UK to Australia. If you didn't stay for 2 years you had to pay the Australian government the balance of your fare out plus pay your own fare home.

Barry Michael, Lester Ellis, the Waters brothers and quite a few other "Australian" boxers from the 70's and 80's were members of families who came to Australia under the assisted migration scheme.

Boxing always thrives in immigrant populations in the western world.

"Pom" is an Australian term for British immigrants. It's origin is disputed. Some claim it came from the letters POHM (Prisoner of His / Her Majesty) that was supposedly stenciled on the back of the shirts worn by transported prisoners. Others claim it was because the fairer skinned Brits faces resembled pomegranites after an Australian summer.

For me too, Collins. I met Najib Daho in London in 1982 when he was being thrown in with everyone (he was a really likeable guy) but eventually Jack Trickett began promoting regularly in Manchester and Najib went all the way to a world title shot. His win over Cowdell for the British title was also a glorious one. Incidentally, I mentioned Barry Michael's Mrs - you should have seen Najib's! Stunning.

Hence the "10 pound pom" clue.

I was at that fight, bennie.

Langton Tinago was on the undercard smashing an Aboriginal lad, Graeme Brook, in a CW fight.

Also Eddie Smith beating future centurion Winston Burnett is crushing fashion.
Wow :o

Just last Thursday night I saw Graeme Brooke on an Aboriginal based local football show. He was on as a special guest on a football tipping segment. I have no idea what happened to Graeme as a fighter. After Barry Michael handed him his first loss he lost his way. He drifted away from boxing not too long after

p.s. another possible pommegranate explanation....you guys eating them too help keep away the myriad of diseases in the trenches in WW1. I heard this one from an old local from Saddleworth, up north of Oldham
