I hope Cotto KO's Pacquiao big style

Post by whiskey »

Cotto has been treated like muck by Arum in my opinion, who failed to condemn Margarito after the hand wrap scandal and was since bent over by Bob to sign away his next four fights to him to be put in the mix for a Pacquiao fight.

Now Pacquiao has demanded that the belt must be on the line, despite the fight being fought between light-welter & welter (145lb) and if not threatened to withdraw from the fight altogether, despite Cotto signing his life away with Bob.

Now the Phillipine primadonna is saying he will now pull out should Cotto not agree to a $1m per pound, penalty weight clause. Should Cotto come in over the 145lb limit.

Pacquiao was beaten in my book by Marquez both times they met and since feasting on a feeble De La Hoya has become the queen of boxing.

A load of folk were royally pissed off when they'd read that Bob Arum stated the Hatton fight was all signed & sealed - only for Pacquiao's lawyer to wade in a few days later after everyone had booked expensive flights and hotels and say Manny would not fight for a 50/50 split.

Maybe Manny is a good guy, but as a package with all his hangers-on and ridiculous demands every other week leave me cold.

Cotto is a true gent and brutal fighter and I really do hope he can pull it together and put a bloody end to this cherry picker.

I really think it's a 50/50 fight.

Ill wait until the actual fight for my prediction, but I agree about the weight. If you want to win a welterweight world title, it has to be at welterweight.

Reminds me of the stunt by Ray Leonard when he fought Lalonde for the Super Middle and Lightheavyweight titles  . Lalonde looked like a scarecrow that evening.

If Roach is so confident and Pacman is so great, why are they making poor old Cotto drain off an extra 2 pounds??
That 2 pounds could well kill Cotto at the weight.

Not being funny but who is Cottos agent and why is he letting Arum and Pacquiao dictate?

If somebody offers me a deal which I'm not keen on then I tell them to go f*ck themselves so why don't Cottos team do that?

Surely the agreed weight makes sense. To my knowledge Pacquiao has never even weighed in at 145 so he's still stepping up in weight. Cotto was a 140 champ for a long time (yes I know he had troubles) and weighed in 146 for his last fight. One more pound is not going to hurt him unduly.

I know Cotto struggled big time to get to 140lb .. but does he struggle that much to get to 147lb?

Maybe Cotto is fine with 2lb under the welter limit ... 5lb can make alot of difference.

I think both guys are great for the sport. Just feel Pacman, as great as what he is - has been over-hyped against a terribly weight drained ODLH and a slightly passed it Hatton (Who in all fairness probably wouldn`t have dealt with somebody like Pacman even in his prime)

I see Cotto working Pacman over mid to late rnds.

I can only presume Rick Parry joined Team Cotto.

I can lose 2lb going to the toilet.

I love how the focus has shifted. It used to be that the bigger fighter would be criticised for fighting a smaller one, but now that Pacquaio is the man of the moment, the critics shift the goalposts. Oscar was derided for choosing to fight "little" Manny, then manny thrashes him and suddenly it's him who's the bully for asking Oscar to drop weight.

2lb is not a big deal.

Don't be naive, an extra 2lbs is a heck of a lot for a pro boxer to lose if he struggling at the weight, which I think Cotto is.
Like someone said, if its nothing why make him lose it?? how many times recently have we seen boxers lose their titles after being unable to shift that extra couple of pounds.

Whats the evidence of Miguel struggling to make 147? He came in 146 last time out - thats not the sign of a fighter struggling to make weight. Has he ever failed the 147 limit? or even had to come bakc to the scales a 2nd, 3rd time.

Whilst i'm sure the $$$ have had a lot to do with it, I don't think Cotto would have agreed to the fight if it was going to leave him dead at the weight. He still has a lot of big fights out there for him especially if he can beat Manny.

I'm not a fan of catchweights but in this case if both fighters are close to their right weight I don't have a problem as it's going to be a cracking fight

I hope Cotto wins so we can see a Mayweather Cotto contest.

I think Manny's last to victories have flattered him a little and I can't wait to see how he reacts to getting hit by a stong welterweight.

no evidence particularly. he's just a very big welterweight. if he was coming into the ring, last it was checked, at 156lbs when he was a LIGHTWELTER, then you gotta figure the bloke is 160lbs+ in the ring. at which point IMO even 2lbs is an issue, maybe not a huge one just that little bit extra draining.

anyways, Gomez, well done, i had no strong opinion who i wanted to win this one, but now if Pac gets smashed i don't think i will be mourning :TU:

although it would probably mean pac-floyd was off and i really want to see Floyd beat Manny- would that do for you gomez?

Whilst I dont disagree with him being "a big welterweight" I dont personally think he's huge at the weight. Cotto was killing himself to do 140, granted, and he was coming in at 156, so yes, he's probably 160 in the ring. But thats common practice nowdays. 14lbs is nothing* to put on between weigh in and fight night, scott harrison used ot do 14lbs in 24hours at featherweight! Cotto isnt tight at 147, he was 146 last time out. So he needs to shed 1lb compared to his last fight.

to put it in context i don't think he is huge like Margarito. marg looked a good half stone heavier to me, but toni goes into the ring feckin massive so....

it may only be 2lbs wales but surely small margins are what decides things at championship level, yes?

anyway as much as owt else its the principle gomez is talking about and i agree with him :TU:

Manny's demands are not too bad, in the scheme of things. He doesn't stand to gain much by taking on Cotto: if he wins he'll be no bigger a star than he already is, but Cotto has everything to gain, and will be seen as The Man if he beats Manny. So can understand him asking for the title to be up for grabs, as the Prize.
Rules say you have to be under 147, and they will be. The 2 pound clause evens things up a bit, because Cotto will have a huge advantage in size here, come fight night.

Imagine Manny taking on a peak Margarito - I think Marg would have run right over him, so it's a big task he's taking on here.

But Cotto at 147 lbs does not have any waste left in his body. He can't go to the toilet and lose 2 lbs, he's already done that. He has also, at 147 lbs, removed a huge amount of water from his body. That's when 2 pounds is a lot.

really? won't Cotto just have *some* people saying all he did was beat up on a former flyweight?

i am not advocating such logic myself, but surely some people will see the win as devalued on that basis?
