Just saw the fight and can safely say that Jones was not at the races. From the opening moments of round one he is forced back into the ropes as Johnson applies pressure, pressure, pressure. Jones catches far more than he even throws and despite his punches being exceptionally accurate they are very weak and merely stun Johnson momentarily. I could only see one clear round to Jones - the third.

The knockout itself is quite brutal as Jones closes his eyes shortly after the right punch lands on the left side of his temple. Johnson throws a weak left that pushes Jones onto his back, where he rattles his head a cracker off of the canvas. For a few minutes afterwards it looks like there could be tragedy as Jones lies cold with his eyes tight shut. Chillingly, the sight of him lying flat on his back with his arms by his side and his eyes closed reminded me of Gerald McClellan when he got injured - the same McClellan whose injuries have reportedly haunted Jones.

To be honest, I haven't a clue. He seemed majorly concussed by the knockout and surely should have went straight to the hospital to spend the night. Whether he did or not I have no idea. :x

Sky would have shown it early this morning or even live if they had it. Instead we get the BBC showing it at a ludacris time and ruining the fight for everyone. Hopefully we'll get the great Jim neilly in commentary too. The BBC should get the **** out of boxing.

Maybe that drug test that he failed showed up why he was so weak now
Archie never weighed in more than the cruiserweight limit. The old one that is.

Interestingly, Archie weighed more than Marciano when they fought.

Well I never saw that one coming.
I thought even a faded Jones would outbox Johnson, but it sounds like Roy was pretty much finished as a fighter, as soon as Tarver's knockout punch had landed.

Sounds like a very bad knockout too. Apparently he's ok now, thankfully. He did got to hospital, not sure if they kept him in overnight though.

Roy will retire after this, he's got nothing left to prove and has always been all too aware of the dangers of the sport.
I don't think he'll have too much trouble walking off into the sunset now...

Massive surprise, as others have said that Heavyweight expedition must have contributed to this alarming decline.

Someone said Jones has been 'exposed', I say bollocks to that, he defeated opposition of Johnson's level for breakfast, he is clearly totally and utterly shot.

Goodbye Roy, thaks for the memories...

For fucks sake, how can he have been exposed.

Jones beat Hopkins and Toney, both of whom were better fighters than Johnson, and Toney was close to his prime at the time. Hopkins possibly wasn't as good as he is now, but he was no worse than Johnson.

The very fact that two years ago, Jones battered Clinton woods with ease should demonstrate that, his one round KO of montell Griffin, his single punch destruction of Virgil Hill, and even the way he fought back into contention in his first fight with Tarver all show what a great fighter he was.

The one regret about Jones' career, is that by the time he got to the defining fight of his career, which was the rubber match against Tarver, he was too far past his best. He also missed out on the matchup against Dariusz which would possibly have cemeted his place as an all time great light heavyweight.

Whilst on pure talent, Jones is up there with the very best, his longest reign, which was at light heavyweught was against pretty weak competition, and he missed the opportunity to hold on the middleweight belt.

It's sad that it has ended like this, but Jones has really gone almost overnight.

Yeah, I think most of the people saying he was exposed and such don't have much knowledge on his career. To see how Jones used to deal with pressure fighters watch his fights with Bryant Brannon, Merqui Sosa, Vinny Pazienza. While Glen Johnson is probably better than these guys, I can see the way Roy handled them giving Johnson a much, much harder fight had Roy fought like that. Saying that, I really feel Johnson deserves the mega pay day he's been searching for his whole career. It would be great if it finally comes off, which it surely will.

As for Tarver: I thought at the time of the 2nd round KO that Tarver had caught Jones at the right moment and would milk the hell out of it. I find it hilarious that not just on forums like ESB, but publications like the Ring magazine, Tarver is near the top of the p4p rankings. Seriously, what the fornicate? The guy is an unnatural light-heavy who goes to sleep for long periods and uses his haymaker left as a trump card. What the hell does he do special?

In Derrick Harmon and Richard Hall, Jones stopped two southpaws who were bigger/taller than himself with relative ease. I don't rate Tarver as better than these guys. Even if he had lasted the distance I feel it would have been a 120 - 106 Telesco style shut out had he fought a prime Jones. As it stands any modern day internet fan would probably slap me down for these remarks with the following response: LOLOL ROY GOT KTFO TARVER #1P4P LMAO!  :TU:

Right, just seen the fight....

It's so obvious now watching that performance, and bearing in mind his previous two against tarver, that jones' legs have completely gone. Not once in the whole fight did he get up on his toes, and he showed virtually no lateral movement at all. At super middleweight and in his prime at light heavy, he could constantly

I didn't think Johnson generally look that spectacular either, he was just presented with a static target who couldn't string more than one or two flurries a round together, and simply outworked him. the first round was the most impressive from Johnson, up until the knockout.

In his prime, Roy would have danced rings around Johnson, who although I admire him very much asa fighter, was simply not in Roy's league. Jones has so little left now, his workrate is non-existent, there's no jab, no movement and his timing is badly gone.

Jones really is shot, he's got to retire or he's going to get badly hurt. Even since the first Tarver fight, he seems to have declined even further. He just looks for potshots now and just has so little energy, strength and movement, even when he did land against Johnson, he couldn't move him or hurt him.

It's over. Send in the clowns.

Reggie Johnson and Virgil Hill are better opponents than are Tarver and Glengoffe who KO'ed him. Even guys who are regarded as "lesser" opponents where pretty good fighters. Thomas Tate for example had a 12 round war with Julian Jackson yet gets blown out by Jones easily. I don't see how the Daruisz fight would have cemented Jones legacy. Dariusz went life and death with guys Jones dominated. He's also incredibly slow while Jones is one of the fastest ever. The fastest ive ever seen.

Whats pissing me of is you are going to get guys posting on forums and writing articles claiming he was overrated and such. He made Toney look like a fool.

I know it's annoying, fuckheads who know nothing will be saying how he got found out, or how he was a fraud etc etc.

The reason i say the Dariusz fight woudl have cememted his legacy, is that there would have been nobody in the division that could have claimed that he wasn't the best. Victory over Dariusz would have made him undisputably the best light heavyweight out there for several years. There were always a few guys at each weight division that you wish jones had faced.

My opinion is that Jones is an all time great, not the greatest ever, and not by some way, nor was he near the best at light heavyweight. super middleweight was probably his best really, but he spent longer at LH.

Whilst I think he would have beat Dariusz into a cocked hat, there is always room for Jones haters to point to that as the fight which he never had.

Just gotta back up what Left hook and James Mc are saying!!!!

Jones has been pro for FIFTEEN YEARS!!!!

He has been a world champion for pretty much the last 12 years

He has beaten modern day legends Hopkins and Toney fairly comfortably.

beaten the following world champions

1)Jorge Vaca
2)Jorge Castro
3)Bernard Hopkins
4)Sugarboy Malinga
5)James Toney
6)Vinny Pazienza
7)Eric Lucas
8)Mike McCallum
9)Montell Griffin
10)Virgil Hill
11)Lou Del Valle
12)Otis Grant
13)Reggie JOhnson
14)JC Gonzales
15)John Ruiz
16)Antonio Tarver

in many of those fights he didnt lose a round.

coming down in weight is incredibly draining on the body and a lot of people are never the same...

RJJ IS A LEGEND... so what he lost his last few fights

So did Ali, Sugar Ray lost 5 of his last 11....

Thats how boxing works.....

You dont know that you are on the slide until someone beats you, then you think that may be a one off so you try again, then you finally realise you aint the man no more.....

That's exactly what i was going to post this morning. Especially the part about him failing to get on his toes. He's never been as flat-footed as he was this weekend, and i'd go so far as to say that his balance was also gone. Not Juuko gone, but clearly nowhere near what it used to be. The only thing he had left was the handspeed, which was negated by the fact that he couldn't get any power into those punches.

All credit to Johnson though, he was good enough and confident enough to capitalise. Hopefully it'll be retirement next for Jones. I don't see how he can carry on from here without being hurt and embarrased. Although fighters getting old is an inevitability, i can't help feeling a little sad when it happens. I think it might be a long while until we see someone like Jones again.

Yeah, people are way too hard on Jones, whi is IMO one of the greatest fighters of all time.

I agree he easily beat Toney but looking back at the Jones - Hopkins fight over the weekend, Roy won, but it was no way a shut out.

For me Roys most impressive performance was his demolition of Thomas Tate, at Middleweight. Awesome is the only word to descibe Jones that night.

To see how much Jones has weakened you only have to look back at the Merqui Sosa fight where Jones was bulled back to the ropes from the start and put under serious pressure. Roy just weaved and ducked effortlessly while firing back with blistering combo's, the strong, hulking Sosa was taken out in the next round.

Well done Johnson but he'd have been destroyed a few years ago. Jones just doesn't have the strength to fight at the top anymore. It's a horribly sudden decline.

yip sensible posts above guys, go along with it all really, no movement no reflexes, little workrate, pot shotting, though I disagree with James I thought Glencoffe went in there with a plan, well his only plan and fomr the first round imposed himself and never let Roy settle.

Thought he fouight about as well as he can.

RJJ should retire it was a bad KO, I was genuinly worried for a few mins, thank goodness it wasnt too serious.

Rjj should retire now, all the attirbutes that made him such a legend are deserting him.

Cheers for the memories Roy even if I never liked you I can appreciate what a great boxer you have been and your service to the game.

It's a shame that now he’s in his mid-30s and losing in such a dramatic manner and saddens me how some people are revelling in his fistic demise.

I’ve never warmed to his personality during some interviews I’ve seen – arrogant is the word that springs to mind.

However, I’ve the utmost respect for the guy’s fistic abilities and it’s sad to see such a great boxing talent fall apart so alarmingly.

I seriously hope that his last three performances do not spoil his legacy because pre-Tarver 1, I don’t think there has been such a dominant force in boxing since Tyson was champion first time around.

Roy hardly lost a round, let alone a fight. He beat Bernard Hopkins and James Toney comfortably, which IMO, were two of the best fighters of his era and you go through his record and he's beaten numerous quality champions and former champions.

His recent struggles are nothing to do with him suddenly facing opposition that punches back, but purely down to his age, wear and tear and no doubt, coming back down after putting so much muscle on when he went up to heavyweight, then going back down to 12st7.

To steal a quote: Thanks Roy, it's been a hell of a ride.

I shall miss Roy Jones Jr. A truly great fighter.

Sorry people but i must jump in and controversially question Jones "legacy", as good and as immensly talented a fighter as Jones is he has taken it too easy in fights throughout his career and paid the price now. His career has been a lot of smoke and mirrors and Jones became a "myth", Tarver exploited the myth and Johnson jumped right on board..Jones is shot and should retire.

How many former foes of Jones will now look back and wish they had taken the fight to him instead of standing back mesmerised by his aura...Glen Kelly anyone?! Jones has had TWO defining fights, Toney and Hopkins...Ruiz was one of the poorest examples of a Heavyweight "world" champion in any era and Jones picked off the weak at the higher division just like he did at the other weights.

When people talk about his legacy there are only the two major fights they can mention because Jones wasted too much time defending against guys like Sosa, Frazier, Kelly, Thornton, a faded McCallum, Woods...don't get me wrong the guys he beat were not "bad" fighters but not enough to cement a great legacy in the hall of fame.

A lot of guys were beaten by the name, quite similar to post prison Tyson, if you were not intimidated and could take the power you were set on your way to beating Tyson, similar to Jones...he had the speed, the power and the unbeatable aura. He is an example of a partially wasted talent IMO Had he just taken an extra risk or two in his career he could have been a guaranteed great and not a questionable one.

For me he is just a couple of big fights short of lofting himself into the same sentence of Robinson, Leonard, Hagler, Ali, Louis etc

Come on Steve it's not as simple as just taking the fight to Jones. The guy's ridiculous level of speed, skill, power and conditioning made him unbeatable for many years.

Against Johnson the speed was there but the conditioning level was not and never will be again. He's a worn out fighter, which has turned him into a mortal one, finally, sadly.
