New WBC catchweight title

fightnews

Jose Sulaiman, President of the WBC, has announced the institution of a new WBC green and gold belt to be called the WBC Diamond Championship, a honorary championship exclusively for fights between elite boxers. This new implementation was voted for unanimously by the WBC Board of Governors. The WBC believes that this belt will play a very important role in fights between elite boxers called “catch weight” fights. This WBC Diamond Belt is being manufactured using the same design as the traditional belt but the materials will include 18 karat gold fusion, 598 diamonds, 196 emeralds, 6 rubies and 150 swarowsky semi-precious stones. Sulaiman also stated that he is very proud of the step taken by the WBC, as it will be in benefit of improving boxing, in benefit of the boxing fans of the world, to promoters, television and everybody involved in the sport of boxing.

I'm so happy Sulaiman has done another great thing to benefit "everyone involved in the sport of boxing".

Just saw this, it never ceases to amaze me what the WBC will do to try and get cash from the boxers.
And why the elite boxers would want these titles? If they just turned round and said no, then they wouldn't have to pay sanctioning fee's for a pointless belt.

Will we see the end of weight divisions? at the very top level of boxing.

Damn! The WBC beat me to it. I was to announce my own world title belt. Its a faded old leather belt that goes well with demin jeans. No jewellery but some faded lettering and a mouldy brown colour, its what all fighters will be after.

The name of this belt is the 'Super Emiritus Universal World Champion' with a Interim version available, and an interim version of the interim!

There's also a special version available for the Fwank Warren stable of boxers, known as the 'OPMNRWCIJCTP' belt.

This stands for Overprotected, meaningless, not really world champion, I'm just conning the public belt.

5p is the sanctioning fee, so its a bargain!

Just a fad and money grab? Or does it actually mean something in Muay Thai circles?

Not sure how it would work?

How would they defend such a belt?

What if say, Froch and Hopkins fought at 172lb for it...

Then Pascal and Pavlik then fought at 170lb...

Would they both get a shiny gay belt ?

Or would the winner of one catchweight fight then have to fight the winner of another catchweight fight ?

What if the agreed weights for the above varied?

I cant see how it would fit and certainly cannot see how it would slip into the ranking system. It would basically mean it is purely a hypothetical title akin to the ring title... except for catchweights !

CRAZY

I'm unbeaten, the fact i have never had a fight shouldn't matter,i'm not a chinless wonder(i have a double chin),just a bit worried about the fact that i'm in my mid 40s with a bad back, totally unfit and would s**t myself at the thought of getting in the boxing ring all i have to do is shift a couple of stone to get down to heavyweight and i'm sorted then i can get myself one of those nice new shiny belts and pay a big sanction fee for the privilege of doing so

Is this just a way of cashing in on the Pacquio Cotto fight. Put this belt on the line for the 145 'cathweight' about. They are both 'elite fighters' and neither current WBC champs.

The only contribution that crook Suleiman could make to boxing would be to die.

The W.B.U came up with this 'innovation' back in 2003 when Cassius Baloyi (W.B.U Featherweight 'Champion') and Philip Ndou (W.B.U Junior Lightweight 'Champion') fought for the spurious 'W.B.U Catchweight Title'

Don't think they produced a special posh belt to go with it though, so Mr. Suliaman can take full 'credit' for that one
