I'd say the truly modern era begins with the advent of Day-before weigh-ins for all classes ecxept Heavyweight. I mean come on, you can't compare an all-time great Featherweight who probably never broke 130 lbs. in the ring after weighing in at 126 like Willie Pep and some monster water-draining freak like Manny Pacquiao who was really a Light Welterweight at "126" and is now damn near 150 in optimal fighting shape. Hell, ex-flyweights Nonito Donaire, Hugo Cazares, and Fernando Montiel are about Pep's size if not heavier.
an interesting topic to debate and one that agreement is never to be reached. to define modern would in itself take some time to get an agreement. However we could more easily define and identify significant turning points such as when Tex Rickard radically changed the financial side of boxing and the impact that has had on the improvemnts in the health and stamina. Then the slow erosion of drawing the colour line. The tv showing of fights -to what extent this led to more "athletic" for want of a better term, rather than flat footed toe to toe.Its like we say a guy was a fighter not a boxer and the more exotic term of science.
