Yep, they're classic Calzaghe crap!Dioufy wrote:Patriot, I stopped listening to what the Calzaghe's said years back.
"I would slap Froch down in three rounds." - Joe Calzaghe
"Jones jr is shot, what would I gain from being the 3rd man to KO him" - then failed to even do that.
"If he would've gone 12 rounds, then Haye wouldn't of fought again" - after Haye changed Macca's hairstyle.
And there's many more but them three are my favourites.

As did Kesslers face, and Jones' (both at a time when Calzaghes hands were shot). Calzaghe was leagues above someone like Khan in every department. I like Khan but he is not the talent that some think he is. The St Clair fight sums up Khans limitations in my opinion though there is still plenty of time for him to improve - to an extent he has already done, but he lacks something...jamesmcdonnell wrote:As did Jeff Lacy, the feckers face looked like someone had put it in a sack and then got two fat people to jump up and down on it.Counter-puncher wrote:as someone said about Mark Delaney, he looked like a truck had run over him by the time calzaghe had finished with himjamesmcdonnell wrote:No way did Calzaghe fight like Khan. Look at Calzaghe's early record, he was mashing people up, he was nowhere near as circumspect as Khan, to compare the two is ridiculous.

tony booth rates calzaghe has the best puncher he has faced(in sparring).check tony's record, heavyweights etc, plus cheif sparring partner for nigel benn.if tony says you can hit,you CAN hit.its blindingly obvious joes hands stopped him going all out with his punches.its a punchers curse

The original post on this thread was not in any way posted to slag off Joe Calzaghe. Just the hypocrisy of his father for moaning about Khan's 'pitter-patter' punches. Through no fault of his own that is the way Joe threw his punches in the latter part of his career but I never heard Enzo critisize his son
And there's no doubt at all that Joe could bang (once upon a time)

In fairness to Khan his fighting heart can't be questioned and when hurt he fights back hard. Like Wlad, who recently said something along the lines that he isn't trying to prove his chin because he knows he hasn't got one, Khan has to be more savvy due to his weakness. To have adapted due to this, perhaps contrary to his natural instinct, is to his credit IMO.
I didnt question his heart, just the comparison in the calzaghe fights like khan did again kotelnik, also, dont ever expect to see khan doing what he did against limmon and gomez again, he'll never be an offensive fighter because of his weakness, and, as you say he's adapted to it in a hit and dont get hit way. great for winning, but quite boring.
Re: Enzo Calzaghe - pot calling the kettle .........
I've spoke to a guy who sparred Calzaghe who said he dont hit very hard, he's just awkward.mickey1975 wrote:tony booth rates calzaghe has the best puncher he has faced(in sparring).check tony's record, heavyweights etc, plus cheif sparring partner for nigel benn.if tony says you can hit,you CAN hit.its blindingly obvious joes hands stopped him going all out with his punches.its a punchers curse
I suppose Joe caught him with a good shot, which does happen.
Tony posts on here i think? maybe he can confirm.
Re: Enzo Calzaghe - pot calling the kettle .........
I was in the gym with JC around the time he was British champ, and I can confirm he hits like a horse, if you look at his early record you can see it, but after the extent of his hand problems he had to lighten up and stick to his boxing

Yes joe never ran from anyone and after watching the lacey fight many times even though joes hands were shot in that fight he was still landing with sickening hurtfull punches all nightfluxstuff wrote:Joe would stand with them at least - constant motion and he wasn't scared of taking a shot. Lacy was for me, his standout performance.
Re: Enzo Calzaghe - pot calling the kettle .........
he obliterated delaney impressively.but if he was a banger he'd of stopped jones, hit him enough times.

If Kotelnik was so ordinary, why didn't Enzo show Gavin Rees how to beat him?

Calzaghe was a hard hitter. The key word is "was".hurlock wrote:he obliterated delaney impressively.but if he was a banger he'd of stopped jones, hit him enough times.

Well at least Kahn was willing to step up and face Kotelnik when he is still in his prime instead of waiting 5 years after Jones was at his peak.

You're comparing Kotelnik and Jones Jnr? Am I right.
I'd place Kotelnik somewhere closer to Richie Woodhall.

Well , it's funny how he stopped knocking out guys as soon as his competition got better. Funny how that works isn't it.Coco wrote:I was in the gym with JC around the time he was British champ, and I can confirm he hits like a horse, if you look at his early record you can see it, but after the extent of his hand problems he had to lighten up and stick to his boxing

Not comparing their ability, just their respective primes.DavidPayne wrote:You're comparing Kotelnik and Jones Jnr? Am I right.

ADMITTEDLY, I PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE USED EUBANK......
Since that was their first real step up and title shots.

So, that being said: If Jones becomes the first to stop Lacy, that will be a decent accomplishment considering Calzaghe failed while landing almost 500 punches?bigjack wrote:Yes joe never ran from anyone and after watching the lacey fight many times even though joes hands were shot in that fight he was still landing with sickening hurtfull punches all nightfluxstuff wrote:Joe would stand with them at least - constant motion and he wasn't scared of taking a shot. Not to mention Taylor couldn't stop the so-called 'faded Lacy'.

This is evidence right there that Calzaghe lacks 'real KO power' and Jones is nowhere close to his prime self.hurlock wrote:he obliterated delaney impressively.but if he was a banger he'd of stopped jones, hit him enough times.
Jones, prior to heavyweight would have circled off the ropes and threw blinding combinations from all angles instead of sitting there taking punishment to the gloves, arms and body waiting for Joe to tire.
Pathetic in comparison, even though Roy is still a delight to watch.

ANYWAY !!

Enzo Calzaghe (trainer)
Amir proved nothing to me whatsoever against Kotelnik, a guy too slow to capitalise. Okay, he stuck to a plan but, in 12 rounds, I didn't see Khan throw one dominant power punch. I just saw the astute, old-fashioned British way, on his toes, with no intention of finalising the fight. Just pitter-patter and only one in four landed. Nothing great, a running match.
I can't see him beating Ricky Hatton, Ricky Hatton isn't Kotelnik. Ricky punches far harder than Kotelnik. Khan doesn't punch hard enough at light-welter to keep him off and is open to left-hooks. I think Ricky would stop him in eight or nine rounds.

It's not his view on the result of Khan/Hatton that made me laugh it was this quote ....

When did Joe lose his power? Before the Brewer (a notoriously chinny fighter), immediately after the KD of Eubank?Asterix wrote:Calzaghe was a hard hitter. The key word is "was".hurlock wrote:he obliterated delaney impressively.but if he was a banger he'd of stopped jones, hit him enough times.
Re: Enzo Calzaghe - pot calling the kettle .........
I do believe that Calzaghe could hit a lot harder when he was younger. Constantly breaking your hand when you throw hard, straight shots isn't good. It's actually underrated that Calzaghe managed to change his style and still be successful.
Re: Enzo Calzaghe - pot calling the kettle .........
He never lost the power. He just wasn't able to throw with such venom for fear of damaging, or breaking, them. I mean, you look at the Byron Mitchell fight and he clearly had power, but he only let rip when he got pissed off. You look at the Kessler fight and he really hurt Kessler with a body shot. You then look at the Lacy fight and he doesn't commit to the big punches because he doesn't feel he needs to.stujones wrote:When did Joe lose his power?
